Kramer's A Racist!!!

This thread is still going on?

From Kramer's website:

In no way do I condone or endorse what Michael Richards said or did.
It is really annoying, and sad, that people are saying that Kramer is a racist.

Michael Richards ceased being Kramer eight years ago.

I would hope that the public would be smart enough to make the distinction between a character on a show, the person playing the character, and me, the person the character was based on

Just for the record. I title this thread "Kramer's A Racist" just to attract the eye. I don't really think that the chracter is a Racist. I know the difference between reality, & non-reality.

You sort of made it a statement, but I suppose anyone is prone to spontaneous reaction in it's many forms when things like this occur.

Oh, and a great substitute word for "non-reality" is 'fiction'. :o

I think this guy has said it best.

Apology from the heart?

At least Michael Richards seems to be truly sorry for his outburst
By MICHAEL COREN

Michael Richards was undoubtedly master of his own domain last week, when the former Seinfeld star delivered a foul-mouthed and racist tirade at a Los Angeles comedy club. By now we've all heard his explanation. He's not a racist, he says, and was simply angry and frustrated at two black audience members who did not appreciate his act.

Well, we all get angry and frustrated at times, but unlike Mr. Richards we're not professional comedians who supposedly have years of experience dealing with hecklers.

Seems to me that after delivering the initial line about black people being lynched 50 years ago, he tried to cover himself by mock hysteria, becoming increasingly extreme and absurd as if to pretend that he was some sort of shock jock. It only made matters worse.

Even when the immensely talented, though not always funny, Lenny Bruce was using this shtick to show the hypocrisy of language and the foolishness of racism, it was sometimes misinterpreted. And Michael Richards is no Lenny Bruce.

So he dug his grave ever deeper and is now trying to crawl out of it with a shovel full of apologies. They seem heartfelt and there is a clear desperation and confusion about the man. It took only moments, however, for has-beens such as Jesse Jackson and Sinbad to climb on the soapbox and opine to the world.

The same Jesse Jackson, of course, who described Jews as "Hymies." My golly, the speed with which these activists appear on television after such incidents is extraordinary. "Got racism? Call Jesse. Fast, furious. Satisfaction guaranteed."

As obnoxious as racism may be, there are many racists who have never harmed another person and many men and women who are not racist who have spent their lives hurting all sorts of people. In other words, racism is always to be condemned but is not necessarily the human trait that causes the most damage.

Richards messed up big time. What he did was horrible and merited a good dose of humiliation. At least the man didn't blame drugs or booze or abuse but admitted that he was a total twit and needs to work on his attitudes.

Thing is, racism exists all over the place but it is officially condemned in North America and Europe. In many African and Asian countries it is virtually encouraged and little is said because of the patronizing and itself racist attitude that only white people can be racist.

When Kenya and Uganda expelled their south Asian populations the western world merely opened its doors to the refugees. When hundreds of thousands of Jews were thrown of out of the Arab nations the usual liberal suspects said hardly a word but Canada, the United States and Israel opened their doors to these poor souls.

In Britain, almost half of the victims of racially-motivated murders over the past decade have been white. In Canada there are all sorts of racist beliefs held by all sorts of ethnic groups. In the United States, white people are frequently the subject of sometimes extremely cruel jokes told by black comics.

So we have to be honest. And we have to ask whether a brief if vile racist scream is a greater sin than the refusal to forgive someone's uncharacteristic behaviour. The answer reveals a great deal.

Kramer dated a black girl in season 6 I believe...although it was ruined with a botched tan.

Am I the only one who doesn't care anymore? The first time I heard the news I said to myself, "wow! That's crazy." Now I don't care anymore.

What the hell were the people laughing at? He seemed really sincere, & shooken up over the whole thing. I think the main reason why he seemed a little out of it, was because it was a satellite feed. There could of been audio delays, or what not.

Well I think that happened close to, or the night after the video was leaked. Maybe most of the audience hadn't seen or heard about it and thought it was some odd skit.

That and he was saying afro-americans which might have made some of them giggle too.

Look I don't mean to be a dick here, but look at it this way.

1. The Camera only turned on just before Richards Flipped out.

2. The guys were heckling him.

Maybe they knew he was going to fly off the handle, & wanted to get it on camera. They just weren't anticipating him going that far. I don't like racisim, but this smells of a set up.

You're not serious are you? The guys he insulted weren't the ones filiming.

Ha! Yeah...it's a conspiracy. Similar to OJ being set up. Up next? Philip Michael Thomas (c) Chris Rock.

It wouldn't be unreasonable for some jackass to heckle a comedian for the sole purpose of filming his reaction.

Like that hasn't been done before.:whatever:

"Afro American" hasn't been used for decades..

It may sound silly now, but there was once a period in American history where any other phrase brought with it some serious outrage from the black community. There was a time (however small) where the black community was pushing hard to have the term used everyplace. While it's obvious that Richards is out of his lingo and social jargon, "African-American" isn't anymore a correct term than the alternative; the term "African-American" is a misnomer, in that it implies the person was a citizen of Africa and then immigrated to the United States to reinstate citizenship on American soil. It is not a proper term to reference all people whose skin pigmentation is considered 'black', and even less a correct term of usage for any person born in the United States and not of foreign soil.

As a man of color, I also don't like the term, "African-American". They should do away with ethnic terminology altogether because they're starting to lose their original meaning.

I've seen Jeffersons, they threw out the term coloured a long-time ago as well.

C'mon man, get with the times.

I have been sitting here trying to figure out a way to explain to you just how simple this set up would be. Unfortunately my brain can't go with out working that long without suffering permanant damage. I am sorry I cant help you. Maybe your special ed teacher could explain it to you.
