Laptop or PC? for CC :)

does anyone use a desktop anymore? am i the last of a dying breed?

my computer will be obsolete soon, i've mentioned this elsewhere before. i want at leat 1.5 TB hard drive, and at least 16gb of ram.

i've recently learned that laptops can carry these specs now. (i just never bothered to look into it). so i'm wondering if that's the better course for me now. ugh.

i don't need a monitor, i've a great one. so if i go PC, i just need the tower. but, if i go laptop, the screen size isn't what i want, but i could connect it to monitor right? and there is the portability factor i kinda like.

but, i use Photoshop, inDesign, some 3D softwares and other art programs that use a lot of memory, and family tree maker, softwares like that. and i want to learn video editing softwares too. i haven't had a laptop in like 10 years, maybe 15? i assume they can withstand being powered on for a decent amount of time? as when i finally sit to use the pc, i usually set aside a few hours. i don't want the battery to burn out.

and i'm scared to lose everything. that could happen if a laptop is dropped right? and yes i'm aware of external hard drives. i have a fantom one that i haven't plugged in since 2018? haha and i had a western digital around 2010 that started clicking. i still have it in the hopes that stuff on there is salvageable.

edit: i do know i am not interested in a chromebook, surface tablet or ipad. i have an ipad fwiw

you've mentioned that and honestly i don't think i'm savvy enough to do it proper. my budget is $1500, $2K at max.
and i'm not a fan of AI stuff but i don't think i'll have a choice at this point

edit: someone mentioned to me to look at gaming computers because of the graphic cards, ram and space they require but i don't know if they have any merit to what they're saying.

A gaming PC will have strong specifications and be well above what most if not all programs for non gaming would ever call for, in saying that you'd be somewhat "future proofing" yourself as I see it in that regard at least.

i like these, but they're 1TB. i did the questionaire on the BB website to see what PC is best for me and these are the 2 they recommended. i like that the dell still as SD slot(s) as i wouldn't have to buy anything to upload my camera

If you're doing content creation, specifically video editing, then you will need the highest CPU core count that fits your budget. Video editing is quite CPU-intensive so the more cores the better (8+ cores).

For RAM, I'd go with 32 GB minimum. 16 GB doesn't cut it anymore these days. For the GPU, I think you can go with an entry-level or mid-range card that has 8 GB VRAM.

As for storage, you want an SSD (solid-state drive) which is much faster than a hard drive and is thus crucial for video editing.

Are you doing this as a hobbyist? Or do you intend to make some money out of it? And will you use the PC (or laptop) for gaming?

32 gb is what i want. at least 1.5 TB SSD

i dont think i'll be doing content creation inasmuch as i want to edit old family videos, photos etc make them accesible. i mean maybe for personal use, but not to make money or be an influencer. i do craft and art at times, so i use InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, Design Space, etc. i do a lot of genealogy too and those have softwares. 3d printing. ulead when i make my own avatars haha
i do get asked to create slideshows for people often (funerals mostly :/) so there is that.

i dont have any inclination to game on a laptop i dont think

@flickchick85 really got me considering a macbook now too after her post in the lounge.

I used to do video editing professionally and still do it for fun on occasion and I haven't touched a desktop computer since grad school.

You'd be amazed at how powerful they are now, CC. My current laptop is a Macbook with 2TB of storage and 24GB of memory. As for being scared to lose everything, A.) protective shells are pretty inexpensive, not to mention carrying cases, B.) regular cloud backups, C.) back-up to hard drive. You can use your monitor with it for extra, too. I have yet to find a good reason to ever look back into getting a desktop, honestly.

i'm not too fond of the cloud, but back up hard drives and flash drives etc are okay. i'd definitely get a case.

i've not used an apple computer since the macintosh's that came out in school that had different color monitor cases. iMac G3 i think it's called.
