Laptops

My Dell Inspiron (with Vista) has yet to fail me, but since you're not going for Dell, my only suggestion is to avoid Gateways. Everyone I know who has one has had it fall apart after two years.

Wow. As I was logging into the Hype, I was just about to create a thread asking the same thing.

I would love a Mac because of how efficient it is, because Jag clearly spelled out just how good it is, and because that free iPod deal is enticing. However, the things that are hurting me are the prices (to some degree) and, mainly, the memory. I had a Macbook in mind, and even though $1,099 isn't an outrageous price (though the thought in the back of my head will be "You could get an $800 laptop instead"), the big problem that holds me back is the memory. I only need a laptop for college (writing papers, basic web surfing, and music/DVD player because I'm not into computer games), and I know I'll need more than 2GB.

Any more suggestions?

The Macbooks come with at least 120GB hard drives. Memory and Hard Drives are 2 different things, you don't save files in the 2GB of memory.

Oh s***. My bad. :o

The 2GB was the RAM, right?

That's more than enough.

I just don't know about $1,099 dollars. If I'm just writing papers and browsing the net, is a Macbook worth it? What makes it so much better than a $800 dollar laptop?

i'd definately go for a mac book if i could spend the money right now . it just seems better in comparison to everything else

I think a major part of a Mac is the support. If you have a Mac Store near you, it's very friendly and you get quick and in-person help with any problems you're having.

Then you have the lack of viruses, and the reliability.

I used PCs for like 11 years, and when my last laptop crapped out on me, I bought an imac a little under a year ago. It just feels like it works better. The first imac I bought did have some freezing issues right away, it was obviously a hardware flaw, but the Mac store took it back, switched it for a new one, switched the extra RAM I bought, all in under an hour. My new one is running perfectly and I use it a lot.

If you have a Mac store near you, go to it and mess around with all the computers they have on the floor.

In short, Apple is more reliable, imo.

We need Jag in here to deliver the killing stroke.

Thanks for the input.

There actually is a Mac store in the next city (about a 20 minute drive). I'll definitely go in there and get some advice from the people there, while getting hands on.

It can't hurt to go there and see what it's all about.

Yeah, the guy who was selling Mac's at the best buy I went to was hott. :O

My biggest thing is that I want a decent sized laptop. To get a MacBook Pro with what I want, that's $2,500, not even counting tax and whatever else they tack on. The regular MacBook is only 13 inch screen; that small would just annoy the hell out of me, and even those are about $1,500.
So I might as well pay less than that to get a nice 15 inch customized PC for much less. I just don't feel like spending that much on a laptop when I already know that I'm not a Mac fan.

I've wanted an Alienware laptop for a long time... but I am not sure whether I still want one after Dell bought them. Also, most of them are coming with Vista now.

Alienware is overpriced crap. ESPECIALLY since DELL took them over.

Dell overcharges just as much as Apple. A real overpriced computer is a Sony. Also, they have bad customer service.

I am not very knowledgable about laptops. I only just recently bought one. It's a Dell Studio 15(I think) it's a 17" screen. And so far so good, it has a nice design, works fine, the only problem for me, at least, is the size. It's too heavy to carry around all day. But other than that, I don't have any other complaints. It's been good so far.

My laptop's a Toshiba Equium, bought it in March it's been good so far, way better than my old laptop, which was a craptacular Acer.

An abacus would be better than an Acer. :hehe:

The problem with Apple isn't that they overcharge so much as that they don't offer a cheaper model. Except for the little hard drive, their base model is, and has the price of, other companies' middle to higher range machines. Dell's cheapest laptop is like 500, Apple's is 1100. Is that 500 dollar laptop that good? Well no, but they have a wider range of options.

A friend actually suggested to me to get an Acer... another an IBM....
I think my friends have very low computer standards...

Ok, here's another comparision...

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTE3MjA

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1330?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19

So the Dell's are cheaper and have a bit more memory, but I just HATE the Vista programming. Eh, I'd get a Mac, but the choice is up to you, so do what you want.
Dell offers more than just Vista, you can get ubuntu or OpenSuse and run Windows programs via WINe. I'd get an Inspiron 1521 with an AMD Ahtlon X2.

In the past, I've always rolled my eyes when someone told me to get a Mac.

"I need to run Windows. I have too many games and apps that run on Windows."
"You can boot Windows on a Mac, now!"
"Then why the **** don't I just get a PC? They come with Windows and cost half as much."

But now that XP has been discontinued and Vista is the new Windows standard, I say get a Mac. It's not like getting Windows Vista will provide you with better application compatibility.

I'm getting a Macbook Pro soon, and a free iPod because I'm a college student :V Haha!

An Art School student going to college on public transportation and worrying about simple things like relationships and the future, or is my guess completely wrong?
