Teaming with Mann for Noir detective film.

by Stax
US, May 2, 2007 - After years of vainly attempting to work together, Leonardo DiCaprio and director Michael Mann are now teaming for a film noir project. Mann will produce via his Forward Pass shingle and direct from a screenplay by John Logan (The Aviator). The Miami Vice helmer reportedly hopes to make the currently untitled drama his next film.

According to Variety, "the project is an untitled noir drama that takes place on the old MGM lot in the 1930s. DiCaprio is poised to play the kind of private detective studios once relied on to clean up the scandals created by its stars. He's hired to investigate whether a starlet murdered her husband."

The script is now being shopped to studios via talent agency CAA. The film is said to have a projected budget of $120 million; New Line reportedly made a roughly $100 million bid for the project, but no deal has been sealed yet.

Variety adds, "Aside from a budget, the film has a February start date. It will shoot mostly on soundstages, and it works in classic figures like Judy Garland and Bugsy Siegel. The latter is the centerpiece of a shootout scene that unfolds in the Trocadero nightclub on Sunset Boulevard. ... Sources said the script is strong and the film has a period feel reminiscent of L.A. Confidential."

Damn this sounds fantastic:wow::up: Mann and Leo working together will be awesome.

Funny as I was reading it I kept thinking, L.A. Confidential.
Leo will look so good.

Really sad that we have threads *****ing about remakes and teen comedies/horror movies with 80 posts and yet something original from 2 of the best talents in the industry get's one reply:csad:

WOW! To of the best in the business finally teaming up. I guess this puts alot of Mann's other projects on the back burner, because with the way he is he'll probably be in preproduction this whole time. Leo knows how to really pick roles, I can't remember the last time I heard of him taking a role and thinking, bad decision. I'll be keeping my eye on this.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the John Logan-scripted film noir that Mann will direct with Leonardo DiCaprio set to star can't find a studio to finance it. The project has been shopped around for several weeks now to no avail. The story is a period thriller set in the Golden Age of Hollywood. DiCaprio would reportedly play "a tough-guy studio fixer named Harry Slidell."

According to the Times, "At $120 million, even with DiCaprio, the deal was too rich, especially when people can get their Hollywood fix today via Entourage or Extras. The only studio with real enthusiasm is New Line, which has a history of buying material nobody else wanted." Also coming against Mann, the paper claims, is the fact that his last film, Miami Vice, was an expensive underperformer. His reputation for going over-budget and for being a testy perfectionist is also said to be hurting him.

That's just sad:csad:

The title is kinda funny. Dick = a-hole, you know... :woot:

Nonetheless, we'll see how this develops. I've always liked Leo, Mann not so much.

Meh, Leo doesn't do crap in my opinion. I'm a bit interested because of Mann though.

Except Titanic, but can't blame Leo for that--anyone would have been s**t in that garbage.

But anyway, sounds like a cool movie. Sad it can't get financed. :csad:

Leo's been on a golden streak over the last couple of years.

At this point, I'll pretty much see Leo in anything.

Lol. Thank god I'm not the only one who finds the thread title funny.

maybe the title of the thread is scaring them away ;)

but yeah Leo doing a Noir movie. i am so there

damn.. shame about the studios not wanting to make this

I would see this movie only for Leo, as he proved he is a great actor after such successful thriler as The Departed. Sadly, it won't get green light soon :(

I just read this. I agree with you. Some of the best movies ever are the crime noir films of the late 30s and 40s. Shade, Marlow, etc. This movie will be a special treat.

You think it will be in color or black and white?
