Lethal Weapon V

cool, since Shane Black's writing at least it will bring back some of the magic which it did with the first two (he never did the 3rd & 4th).

Lethal Weapon 5 News
Black may succeed Donner as director.
by Jim Vejvoda

US, September 24, 2008 - The first rumblings that Lethal Weapon 5 might finally be happening surfaced last month, and today brings word that Richard Donner will likely not return to direct it should the sequel actually happen. So who might step in for him?

According to Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider blog, Shane Black plans to direct Lethal Weapon 5. Black created the characters and penned the original 1987 film.

EW reports that "Lethal number 5 still hinges on Mel Gibson, who's currently filming Edge of Darkness in Boston. Longtime Lethal producer Joel Silver has been trying to nail down approval from Gibson about Black's approach, which includes introducing a pair of young NYPD cops."

The story reportedly revolves around the impending retirement of Martin Riggs (Gibson), who enlists his retired partner Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) to help him crack one last case.

A fifth movie?

I'm a fan of 1,2 and 3 (4 not so much) but c'mon - surely the weapon that was previously so lethal would be pretty impotent by now.

Oh, God, if Shane Black does direct, in addition to writing the scrip, I am SO THERE!!! Please let this happen!!!

^^^ f**k yeah, Shane should write and direct. Kiss kiss bang bang is one of the most underrated movies i have ever seen.

I love that the two best action flicks of the 1980s were both Christmas movies.

That being said, I'm on board for a 5th movie. All these sequels (Indy 4, Die Hard, Rocky Balboa, and Rambo) to old franchises are better than new stuff coming out anyway.

Not really. I'm not saying they're better than everything, or their original counterparts, but they're all a lot better than a good portion of the dribble that's being put out now.

Scifi has very good point. As hard unbearable as it may seem, remakes and sequels sometimes are better than the quasi-original ideas that are coming out in Tinseltown nowadays.

I didn't see a reason for the 4th Lethal Weapon to be honest, but film studios are looking to cash in on sentiment apparently.

Yet another Desperation Sequel.

Typical Hollywood conversation circa 2008: "Hey, you know we made those classic movie series' decades ago and wisely decided to stop when we'd made enough bad sequels? Well why don't we do another sequel?"

"But....the stars are far too old, and that series ended in the 80's!"

"What would you rather? Back an original, untested idea with no brand awareness?"

They both laugh.

You realize it has Shane Black back? He seems to be doing fairly well now a days, I think he just wants to end it right.

I more interested in Black's next film about the cold war agent coming out of retirement.

In August it was revealed that Shane Black was working on a screenplay for Lethal Weapon 5. When news hit earlier this week that Black had signed on to direct Cold Warrior for Universal, we assumed that the momentum for a new Lethal Weapon film had died. Entertainment Weekly reveals that producer Joel Silver is waiting on series star Mel Gibson’s approval of Black’s treatment for the fifth film. Apparently, the story introduces a new pair of young NYPD police officers, and Silver needs Gibson’s approval before moving forward. And Black still intends to direct the fifth film in the series.

You can't spin off a new franchise and call it Leathal Weapon... Gibson and Glover would end up being extended cameos if to other young guys were used as the leads... eventually these cop films get old after a while anyway. I say a big no to this.

it doesnt have to be a spin off, just two new guys taking thier places, one last bust before the team calls it a day. No need for a spin off.

Yeah, I seriously doubt they would continue past this film with another team.

Why would you even have to young guys in there then if that's not your intention? I understand you can't do the action with the leads as old as they are now. But still... they are prepping up Leathier Weapon 6: More Leathal than Ever Before. I know you need some new young guys but to me it's just going to be like Labeouf in Indy 4. There is always the potential they will make another crap ass sequel.

pointless cash in or not I can't see it going wrong with Shane Black at the helm, in Shane I trust :p

ofcourse there is a chance that they will make another sequel, i think they are bringing in a young team just to take the piss out of Mel and Danny. I dont see Shane trying to start another franchise, he wanted to kill off Riggs in the second movie.

Which is why I am hopeful for this movie. Its more Shanes baby than anybody else and he wants to end it properly, esepcially since Riggs dying at the end of LW2 would have been an awesome ending. Unfortunately, the story doesnt sound incredibly promising.

They didn't kill him but they did put him through the ringer....shot up his trailer, kill his girlfriend, he got stabbed in the leg and shot multiple times. Tough night for Riggs.

Yeah but would have ended LW correctly. Instead there was a half-assed 3rd installment where Riggs acted more Looney Tunes than off his rocker and a 4th installment that was all good and fun and ultimately enjoyable but not as great as the first 2

I'm not arguing whether they should kill him or not(I agree the last two films weren't that good). I just was pointing out the ass kicking he took in that film.

I'll be there for a fifth film.

I love how this is shaping up. Glover (I'm assuming he's back now), Gibson, Black and now Columbus Short. :D
