Alright guys crazy idea but since these are 2 of the biggest movies of 2009 i would like to as a What if kinda question for you fans.

ok ok

What if? Zack Snyder directed the new Star Trek and J.J. Abrams got handed Watchmen? Would it be better for Star Trek and not for Watchmen, or better for Watchmen and not better for Star Trek. Both Directors are unique and both are young and coming up. For my honest opinon i think Abrams would be an awesome choice for Watchmen, and im not quite sure about Snyder with Trek (everything would be slow mo).

Whats your guys opinon? haha

From what ive seen I think both are suited best to the material they are directing, but I'd think JJ would manage better with Watchmen than Snyder would with Star Trek just on the surface, but who knows.

I also do not think these are the 2 biggest movies of 2009.

I guess JJ would bring his mystery box sensibilities to watchmen, adding more subtlety and mystery to it more than Mr. Slow mo Snyder who's so far not shown much skill in that department. Spock would kick Kirk down a shaft in the entrprise, in slow motion. Uhura would lift up her shirt and she'd be braless, in slow motion... so I'd be all for a Snyder directed Trek actually now that I think abou tit.

If that happened, most of the male Enterprise crew would be topless if you know what I mean:D

These may not be the most anticipated movies of 2009 but, they could end up being two of the biggest grossing films. However, I think Transformers and Harry Potter will end up making the most money.

most likely

No way these are the two biggest movies of 2009. I'm not even sure either of them will be top 5.

Nothing will make me go watch Star Trek. And Star Trek is not and will not be one of the two biggest movies of 2009. Transformers 2 and Wolverine will draw larger crowds.

an R rated star trek and a watchmen with a prophecy?

i prefer things the way they turned out

You won't even watch a Star Trek film that is hip and loaded with action? I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan. In fact I dislike the majority of the films. However, I can't ignore the coolness looking factor of the new trailer. It's the only Star Trek trailer that got me excited.

I'm not a ST fan at all and I loved the trailer. I think Abrama is great for the franchise. He really meant it when he said it was also for people who weren't ST fans.

I'd have to agree... as much of a Trekkie as I am, Trek XI is up against some serious competition (TF2 and Wolverine), and I don't think it can compete

Yeah heh heh Dragonball sure is going to be tough competition. Agreed. heh heh

Maybe from a fans perspective...star trek is gonna be a dissapointment at best box office wise with its horrendous release date.

These are not even close to being the 2 biggest movies of 2009, lol. It goes:

1. Transformers
2. Harry Potter
3. Terminator
4. Wolverine
5. Avatar
6. 2012
7. Angels & Demons
8. Ice Age
9. G.I. JOE
10. Star Trek

2009s winter is very weak.

i fear this may be the last Trek movie that they make

Damn, How many of those films are being released in May? It'll be a May 2007 all over again. I have a feeling ST might be the underachiever of the bunch.

Terminator in 3rd ? Avatar has not even shown a frame yet, it has massive bomb potential IMO and 2012 ? Ugh i think Emmerich has shot his bolt with the "destroy the world" formula.

Bingo. But, I have all the faith in the world that Abrams will deliver. I could see good legs and, if it gets a sequel, a big inrease.

2009 is actually a pretty weak year. The big franchise films (transformers, terminator, and harry potter) will steal most if not of the thunder. Its 2005 & 2006 over again. The only films that will prob. top 250 is tf2, which will do near 400, and potter which will top 300. Youll have 2 or 2 HUGE hits and everything else in the low 200's or high 100's.

Avatar is KING KONG jr. If you guys can remember Kongs release back in December 2005, even though it wasnt THAT big of a hit, it had a massive media frenzy. Avatar will see a similar type of release. Mega budget, director of titanic, ect.

As for 2012, it is the most marketable film of the year outside of Transformers. That said, I wouldnt be shocked if they pull it out of Julu and stick it in December 2009. The Day the Earth Stood Still is about to be a big hit there, December 2009 is weak out side of Avatar, and 2012 is currently pinned between 2 huge films.

Wait - Cameron's Avatar comes out this summer? I could swear it was like Christmas '09.

Edit: I re-read the posts.

No, you are right its winter 09. My list was for the year of 2009, not just summer.

I thought that list was only summer. How come you didn't rank Watchmen?

Wow, you guys really don't think Watchmen will be that big? The trailers for Watchmen have been SICK and were attached to two of the biggest movies of this year so far (The Dark Knight and Quantum of Solace). Yes, it is rated R, but it has the potential and buzz to be the biggest R-opening ever, not to mention just a huge hit in general.

Also, the marketing campaign will make or break Watchmen, and so far, it's doing a great job. Like I said, the trailers have been great. The first one didn't tell any of the story, but rather have a taste of what the Watchmen universe is going to be like. This newest trailer has more dialogue and tells a bit about the story, and they've both been cut together nicely. Also, they've already dropped 7 or 8 different posters which will start popping up all over the place. We saw how big of a role marketing played in TDK's success. Watchmen will be no different (though obviously not nearly as big).

Horrendous release date? Star Trek comes out a week after Wolverine and a week before Angels and Demons which isn't getting the best movie buzz as a result of the boring Divinci Code. Trek will do just fine if it is marketed well.
