I don't think kids should be having sex at all. Sex should be between two mature and consenting adults. (Preferably married). Thankyewverymuch.

yes, but different cultures have different concepts of what constitutes an adult. Traditional Jewish culture says 13, and I could easily imagine a society ruled by its elders that doesn't consider you an adult until your 30.

that's a relativitistic viewpoint imo. For me it doesn't matter what culture you're in, a 13 yr old is a child and barely an adult.

In some cultures it's acceptable to eat another human being, it doesn't make it right.

Thingts to bear in mind:

In some countries with a low AOC there is also a second(maximum) limit, ie a 60 yr old man couldnt sleep with a 12 year old girl..there may be a maximum limit of 16 on the elder partner, just as an example.

sex tourism. In the USA, its against the law for someone to travel overseas and have sex with some one below the US AOC. there are moves afoot to make this law in the UK. the sooner the better, imo.

its all a gray area anyway. in the UK, the AOC is 16 for heterosecual sex. that means a 16 yr old boy is a paedo, in the eyes of the law, if he sleeps with his 15 yr old girlfriend.

finally, the paedoph-Isles episode of Brasseye was, with out any shadow of a doubt, the finest piece of media satire ever shown.

pedophilia is a pretty despicable crime. One that should get you locked away for a LONG time. But I do agree all of the Dateline specials, where Stone Phillips jumps out from behind the sofa and asks these guys why they want to "bang young girls" are getting a bit ridiculous. Everyone is doing them now, and a lot of them are bordering on entrapment. It'd be different if a real girl complained and they set up the sting, but these people on the shows pretend to be kids and actively seek these guys out.

I also agree that there whereabouts should only be known to the police, not John Q. Public. However that's a real gray area since people believe they have a right to know. Then again, they dont tell you where former murderers live, so I'm not sure why this should be different.

If you can have an erection or a period, then technically, you are no longer physically a child. Mental maturity is a bit hazier and subjective matter.

In societies where the population is small, the age of consent is low to encourage frequenter childbearing and, therefore, greater population growth. In large populations, it is the opposite. Individuals having children earlier would be of no benefit where population is already greater than it needs to be.

As Elijya has already said, it is subjective to the customs and culture of the people.

Well, the right to vote isn't based on maturity. It's based on whether the government feels you deserve to.

Of course it doesn't, but a cutoff age has to be placed somewhere. The amount of money, time and labor it would take to determine it on a case by case basis would be a great waste of resources.
