Traditionally its held that Gotham is an otherworldly version of NYC...but in Nolan's vision, I see bits of London in there...particularly in the design of the city's public transport system.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was. It seems to be an amalgation of a lot of things like Anton Furst's (first Burton Batman) was but only multiplied by 10. I see everything from chi-town (obviously) and Fritz Lang's Metropolis to Hong Kong & Blade Runner (the Narrows). I hope as the series progressed it grows even more vast and we see a more diverse Gotham by trilogy's end. At first I didn't really like it cause it was too familiar and not fantastical enough but this version of Gotham has really grown on me throughout the past 2 years.

I always thought Gotham was a fictional city in New York.

In the early original Kane/Finger comics the stories took place in Manhattan. So Gotham is essentially, in the comics, based on a grimmer version of NYC. Burton did this with his films as well (especially Batman) saying that "It's like New York City if the planning committe had gone out of control...like it had been in the 80's."

Nolan's Gotham reminded me more of Chicago, where I'm from. I think I liked the Burton Gotham best.

I like Nolan's Gotham best because it has many more elements of reality...

Nei! If Gotham perhaps was an analog to Vegas..Id probably like neon

Not London. Chicago.

In fact, Nolan's Gotham is not only inspired by Chicago, it IS Chicago.

I wouldn't be surprised if Commissioner Gordon showed up in a Chicago Bear's shirt in TDK.

Well, knowing how Nolan just LOVES his realism, he probably will. lol.

I personally dont see anything aside frrom Wayne Manor thats Londonesque. Nolan captured Gotham City as it appeared in the 70's comics, an every city with common building structures, just a bit gritty. The Narrows was the most fantastical of anything in Begins, as said above, like Blade Runner.

Anton Fursts designs for Burtons Gotham City is how it should look for me. It even influenced the way Gotham was presented in the comics after that.
