GLASGOW'S JACK BAUER
Hordes of Glaswegians are flocking to a tribute website set up in the wake of the bomb attempt on Saturday when have-a-go hero John Smeaton helped police wrestle on the alleged bombers to the ground.

Smeaton, a tee-totalling baggage supervisor, is even being dubbed 'BAA's answer to Jack Bauer', the super-hero of TV series 24.

Smeaton was going about his normal business when the two terrorists drove a car bomb into Glasgow airport.

"Those hapless al-Qaeda boys were to find out that Glasgow has no respect for international terrorism. Nobody gets between 10,000 Weegies and a £99 week in Ibiza booked on Thursday night through Barrhead Travel," wrote one fan on the tribute site which has been deluged with humourous comments.

"And most of all, no-one messes with The Polis. Not in this town."

The fan website which includes video footage of the superhero after the event has even launched a campaign to raise money for John.

Maybe he can go to Ibiza on the proceeds.

Smeaton is my hero. He was on an interview on the BBC and the interviewer asked "What would you say to any potential terrorists out there in Glasgow?" and he replied "Well, this is Glasgow, and if you try to pull anything like this, we'll just set aboot ye'." Too true.

how bias you are astonishes me, there are crazy people al over the world regardless of their religion, noone in the right mind would do what these guys and Al-Qaeda do.

Seriously, people should be more scared of white english than anyone else in this country. Fact is that, day in, day out, white english are the cause of more suffering to each other than any so-called terrorists. Fact is more deaths occur on a yearly basis from white-on-white crime. I'd be more worried about the 'knife culture' in England. As a matter of fact I personally would cross the road to avoid a gang of white English youths but I wouldn't try to avoid the brown guy with the beard who 'may or may not be a terrorist'. That's not even in question; the fact of the matter is that the government (particularly this administration) has used fear to influence the public to side with its own agendas. I believe that while they're taking some necessary steps to ensure our safety, they've taken several unnecessary steps with this mass hysteria (perhaps not a politically correct term, I apologize) to their own advantage.

Thus, it is a, "big fear-maker thing," just as Communism was in an earlier era (and even today, to some lesser extent).

Of course they want to kill us; nobody's denying that. Is the government using it to its advantage? Hell ****ing yes.

I'm just simply stating that since there have been several attacks (successful and failed) and more to come (according to our enemy), to say that the government is just playing with our fears is rather naive. If we have only been threatened and never attacked, then you might have a point.

Possibly? It's a damn near certainty. How else would you explain the consolidation of the intelligence agencies into one super-policing force with nearly unchecked power? Or the Patriot Act for that matter?

Nobody's saying it's just playing with our fears; it's opportunism at its finest. As I said, nobody will deny that terrorists truly want to kill Americans...but this has been true for how long? It's only become real in people's minds since 9/11.
