Quiet on the set

I.M. - `IRON MAN': Those of us in the high-power, high-pay world of show business have an adage that we usually utter in Latin, but for you little people we'll break it down into English: "The bigger the movie, the less we talk about it."

It's the whole hush-hushedness of the thing that makes a big picture even bigger. Mystery shrouds everything. Rumors abound. Interest builds. Box office explodes!

"Iron Man," based on the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Marvel Comics hero, is the big picture in town right now.

There's not much of a clue that anything's going on except for a few black-on-yellow crew cards tacked to poles and bearing nothing but the message "IM."

Oh, and also Shoreline Drive, between West Broadway and South Chestnut Place, is closed for a couple of weeks for filming, so visitors coming from the west to such off-Shoreline attractions as the Aquarium of the Pacific and Shoreline Village are being re-directed through town and down to South Pine and other parts east. Shoreline Drive will be open to southbound traffic from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through May 15.

You can see an awful lot of the filming, and the film's supporting sprawling crew camp set up out in a parking lot south of Shoreline, from our stunning suite of offices high atop the ARCO Center (which is being shown as a backdrop for part of the film. Our building does have a sort of futuristic Evil Empire sort of look about it when the lighting is done correctly).
Our usual gang of Hollywood Insiders are a bit rabbity about what's taking place for the Long Beach shootings of "Iron Man." We do know that the film is being directed by Jon Favreau, a great comic actor ("Swingers," "Made," "The Break-Up," all with pal Vince Vaughn), and new-ish director ("Elf"), who just might be enough of a comic-book geek to pull off a project this huge (a rumor: the film's budget is $75 million). Robert Downey Jr. stars as the title character, and others include Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges.

During the two-week Long Beach shoot, we've heard that "a bunch of stunts" are planned, including a fight scene on Shoreline.

We hope that the fact/rumor that "Iron Man" will include stunts and a fight will not spoil the movie for you. Perhaps you'll even forget about this by the time the flick stomps into theaters on May 2, 2008.

Hey, I didn't stop!

Alexi and I walked to this really nice local spot for lunch. On the bridge there and back, we cross the area where they are filming Iron Man.

A mysterious truck with a hole on each side. Looks like it was carefully ripped out and the hole is covered from the inside with black curtains. There are cables and crew every where.

I drove through there yesterday to visit my inlaws for Mother's Day. I saw the truck in the picture, fake hole in the barricade, and what looked like a car accident with a bus. I used to work in the Arco building, so seeing things down here being filmed is a pretty common thing (CSI Miami gets filmed in the area, too).

Ironically, I just moved to Los Angeles two weeks ago and live in an apartment across the street from the studio that are shooting/shot IM in, in Playa Vista.

Thanks for sharing that Kibo.:yay: I'd love to bump in to movie set. It's very rare for that to happen here but in L.A. people are used to it so it's not a big deal.

Here's another pic from the set courtesy of bruxhina.
