Just because the JGL does not look like himself doesn't mean the makeup looks convincing. Personally, I just think it looks fake. As with most makeup, it probably needs a certain lighting to make it seem more convincing. Hope it looks better in the movie, but it's looking kinda bad so far.

I realize this is all subjective - but what about it looks fake to you?

Is it the color, the forms, or the fact that you know it's JGL?

Had you not known that was JGL in the photo to begin with are you saying you would have know it was someone wearing a make-up?

Sort of like RDjr in Tropic Thunder - if we were not told that was him I do not think anyone could tell just by looking at it. I think the same of this one, but since we know it is JGL some may be finding "faults" where there aren't any.

The mouth area looks kind of chimp-ish and the brows just look off. His nose also looks altered too, along with the tone of his skin. If I hadn't known it was JGL, I would've thought the same thing. It really wouldn't matter who was under the makeup, or if I hadn't known at all. A bad makeup job is a bad makeup job. The fact that I know it's JGL under there just helps me point out the abnormalities easier. Like I said though, might look better under the right lighting. Reminds me of this:

I'm still interested in the movie though. It's going to take more than something like that to turn me away.

I can't wait until the trailer for this come out. I read the script that leaked a while ago and it was amazing.

I don't think the make-up is anywhere near as terrible as Walker's for AL:VH but I don't see the need for JGL to have it to resemble Willis more closely, like Project862006 said, I think we as the viewer can suspense our disbelief but it depends on the execution of it all so hopefully they could make it work throughout the whole movie.

It could turn out to look really cool, images can be misleading. Not jumping to any conclusions, yet.

Really?

You are saying had you just seen these photos cold - completely out of context of their being from a movie - you would have know it was someone in a make-up?

Really?

Again, I guess it's subjective but the color looks dead on to me and particularly in the second photo I see nothing to suggest that it's someone in a make-up.

Maybe you just have a better eye for that sort of thing.

Devin Faraci of Badassdigest.com said Joseph looks better in motion, and he was a powerhouse in the screening he saw late last year.

Long live Rian Johnson.

Last year I saw a test screening of Rian Johnson's time travel movie Looper and I liked it a lot. Read my thoughts here.

One of the things that struck me about the film is the way that Joseph Gordon-Levitt transformed into a young Bruce Willis. He's wearing some prosthetics, which you can see in these pictures, but the real heart of the performance can't be captured in just a photo. Levitt obviously studied a lot of Willis and really took the actor into himself. It's uncanny, and it's the kind of a performance hot young movie stars aren't supposed to give - it's completely transformative.

So enjoy these photos, but know that the trailer is coming online in a few weeks, and that'll give a better sense of how incredible JGL is in this movie.

/Film Video Interview: Rian Johnson Talks ‘Looper’

Posted on Monday, March 19th, 2012 by Germain Lussier
Rian-Johnson-WonderCon.jpg

Rian Johnson‘s never done this before. This, meaning, promote a movie he really can’t talk about with a huge, huge studio backing it. The movie in question is Looper and, from the looks of it, Johnson has finally stepped into the big leagues after two fantastic smaller films. Looper, which will be released September 28, stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a present day assassin for the mob of the future. Time travel is real and the mob uses it to send people back in time to be murdered. It’s called being a looper and the perks are fantastic…until the person sent back to kill is the 30-year-older version of yourself played by Bruce Willis.

Johnson seems to have really outdone himself with Looper, crafting a whole new world of time-travel, action sci-fi. In our exclusive one-on-one interview, the writer/director (and frequent /Filmcast guest) talked about how he researched this concept, the contributions (or unfortunately lack there of) of Primer director Shane Caruth, when and where the film might premiere and even one question that prompted the usually candid director to ask me to turn the camera off. Check out the video below.

Thanks to Sony Pictures for making this awesome interview a reality.

Looper hits theaters on September 28.

i've only just heard about this movie yesterday. sounds really interesting.

It's pretty seamless by any standards, the color match looks to be perfect, etc. - some just have to be the first to find fault with it.

I have no real opinion of the AL:VH make-up yet, as I have not really studied it at any length, but my first impression is more of a case of bad casting than a bad make-up. I think he's just wearing a nose and beard, but if some one has a big square head there is nothing you can do to make it look long and thin. This is why Cagney was such a bad choice for Lon Chaney in Man of A Thousand Faces - there was no way you could recreate those iconic make-ups on his pumpkin head.

can they please realese the trailer? JGL is a good actor and i need to see footage.

wow, thanks for posting the blow ups - holds up pretty nicely...

I wonder why they opted for using Bruce as an older JGL instead of just having JGL play both roles.

Going by the reviews they pulled it off but its just an odd decision in my opinion

Had noone mentioned there were prosthetics involved i would have just assumed JGL was looking older.

This was addressed at Wondercon actually

Was the plan always to have two actors for the older and younger versions of the character?

RJ: Initially when I cast Joe, before we had cast Bruce, we were talking about the option of just either doing makeup or doing something…

JGL: And I, the egotistical actor, was going, “Let me do both! Let me do both!” (laughs) I’m so glad that’s not what we did.

RJ: The reason I actually came down against it was twofold. First, aging makeup on younger actors — I don’t feel like I’ve ever seen it completely work. There’s been some tremendous work that’s been done, but I feel like if you know what an actor looks like who’s young, at least I as a moviegoer can usually see right through it. The bigger thing, though, a big part of the hook of the movie for was the idea of a young man sitting across from an older man who’s himself. You can make someone up, Joe is a fantastic actor, but there is something about a span of 25 years between two people that you can’t fake, that just buys you something that’s intangible and very essential to what this movie is basically about.

I think it's for the best as well. It's what makes it exciting, seeing the similarities and differences that the years have made between the two same person.

Rian gave a cute answer why they are using two actors. but this is hollywood and Looper without a known name wouldnt have a chance. like zero. JGL was not known enough when they started filming this. they are friends and the younger character was written for JGL. but they needed an actor like Bruce .

Okay.

He's still right about aging make-up.

I wish they had released a still of JGL and Bruce in the same shot so we could get a real comparison.

Looper would totally miss the boat if they don't use the infinity symbol to replace the two 'o's in the title.

So according to twitter, April 14th is the date the trailer will premiere

Man, JGL is going to be blasting on some people. Awesome photos.
