Lost in Space (Netflix)

One of my minor problems with this show is that John Robinson is not a scientist in addition to being a kickbutt soldier, but is instead portrayed as being a stereotypical idiot kickbutt soldier.. I really hate the tired and played out modern trope of having male heroic characters who are soldiers being dumb and smart guys being week scared nerds. Why can't a male hero be both a genius scientist and a kickbutt soldier/fighter like they used to be portrayed back in the day?

AMEN to that. I'd have preferred if the roles were reversed. He was the egghead and she was the military officer. Or simply as you said, that he was both scientist and soldier.

Hot-take, man. Having seen the movie and this show back-to-back I still prefer this vastly over the movie.

But yeah I finished this yesterday and while I applaud its lavish production values and all the show overall leaves a lot to be desired and I really dislike the villain/antagonist though she was very poorly written and way too over-the-toply acted. This show needs better writers.

Finished watching the fifth episode.... And i still don't understand whats the motivation for parker posey's character ? do they explore that in the subsequent episodes ?

Why is she evil ? Why does she sabotage the sensors (which allowed the lizard creatures to attack that tower of light).... Why did she leave the smuggler behind ?

Just read that this show has been "A-OK"ed for season 2. Hope they fasten the pace for season 2.

Basically....she's nuts. She's a sociopath, she simply cares about herself and no one else. She sabotages the colonist's attempt to contact the orbiting ship because she knows if she goes back up, she will be jailed. She leaves Don and the injured woman behind because she feels they will slow her down from being rescued by someone else.

And yet she seemingly does not actually harm the Robinsons even when you assume she wants to and will. Such a confusing character. I'm sure Posey did the best she could.

I JUST FINISHED THE WHOLE THING! MAN !! This show is top notch!! The writing is better than anything I've seen SCI FI in quite so time!! The EFX are motion picture worthy!!

I cannot wait for Season TWO!!

Watched the show over the last two days and loved it.
I liked all the characters, something that does not happen a lot lately. I am especially surprised that i liked all the kid characters. My favorite character has to be Penny. Really like her personality.
The special effects are really good for a show. The robot was great.
The villain is something that i have not seen too often. Her plan was displayed rather well.

Can't wait for season 2. Really happy that we got some great sci fi back with this and the expanse.

Really? To each their own, but I thought it was godawful on every level.

I found the movie to be underwhelming. This new series is definitely better than the movie. HOWEVER, if you would take the best parts of the movie (the cast,Debbie the bloop, the weapons, the spacesuits, special effects, and the faithfulness to the original TV series characters) and combine it with the best part of this new series (the story, vehicles, the other colonists, the robot, the monsters, the TV serial format, and the special effects) then we would have had a damn near perfect LIS series.

Literally just finished the first episode and found it very compelling, at least this first one. Very good character building and quite emotional. Like with ALTERED CARBON they kinda dump you in the middle of things and don't spell things out which can be... annoying but I assume more gets revealed as it proceeds. It's certainly already better than the 90's film which was for me... Just dull and the characters were less than engaging. With this first episode I'm already on board with this family.

I totally agree!!

I have mixed feelings about the show. I didn't watch the original series and know practically nothing about it, other than it's Swiss Family Robinson in Space, and I saw the movie. It was meh. I only got up to episode 6, because I got so pissed off I had to turn it off.

Mild (?) spoilers below:

I'll start though with what I did like. The kids didn't annoy me, the effects were good, especially the design of the robot, and I even liked how they started off with the moment things all go wrong and toss you in to figure things out along with the family and other survivors. I liked some of the humor peppered in too, and it felt realistic, not the sarcastic comment the "hero" makes in the face of insane odds, but a natural human reaction to absurd situations. "It's like bumper cars. Where everyone dies." Ha. I like Penny. Although I think Judy is my favorite. Don't tell the others.

I do love Parker Posey. But put a pin in that.

I also liked the Watanabe family. Along with about 90% of the rest of the Jupiter ship survivors.

I liked Don West, but I think I would have preferred him a bit more rogueish and a tad less consistently opportunistic. How about a touch of cleverness and mouth keeping shut, hmm Don? However, he said something to Judy that didn't make much sense. When he was arguing with her about making money off of the location of the fuel in the Jupiter ship in the desert, he said something about how they all get to go off to their colony while he has to go back to Earth. But in flashbacks, they talk about how the trip to Alpha Centauri is one way only. So were he and other crew like him only going so far, then launching off the ship to its final destination, then they go back to Earth and do it all over?

I'm afraid that brings me to what I don't like.

Some small things like how they tried to get Judy out with magnesium but were burning it right above her. Not grabbing the tent to cover the hole when it started to rain.

I hate Dr. Smith. And not in the way one hates the villain of the story. I know there was a Dr. Smith in the original and the movie, but I honestly don't get the point of her character.

Victor, the "colony leader" that apparently no one likes. If no one likes him, how the hell did he get elected? Was it just because no one else really wanted the job? There's enough drama with everyone trying to survive. Making him a jerk is a wasted effort at "human drama" or a rather insulting way to make sure we only see the Robinson's as the heroes. People can have different opinions and point of views to be in conflict with the protagonists of the story and not be jerks, or even wrong.

This brings me to the specific moment where I literally said out loud to an empty room, Oh for f**ks sake" and shut the series off. When Don leads the others to the ship in the desert so they can siphon its fuel and they have it all, so Don clearly goes back inside to tell the other's to get out. He's still on the ship, yet Victor doesn't bother with an all-clear before telling the rover or pod drivers to cut their lines, letting the ship fall. Naturally Judy doesn't do it, putting herself in grave danger. Either that was moronically stupid on Victor's part, or the jackass was hoping Don would die so he could renege on their deal. Neither option is awesome. But not only was Victor a moron for not getting an all-clear, so was everyone else on that mission. The two who left the ship knew he was in there, as well as the people who saw him go in. If they're the best and brightest of humanity, we are screwed.

I did read spoilers, so I might go back and finish up the series, hoping that stupidity of that particular moment is an anomaly, because from what I read, how it ends is really clever, as a build-up to the original premise of the original show, and an interesting story to follow. (Even if one character makes it to the end of season one I wish hadn't.)

At one point it is mentioned that Don has made the trip many times.....so I take it as the colonists have a one way trip but the crew of the Resulute go back and forth ferrying people.

Just finished watching the first season overall I think it is a good show. I didn't care for the villain too much but everything else was good to me. I personally liked this better than the movie and original series but that's just me.

They mentioned it was the 24th expedition. So I guess the main ship goes back and forth.

annoying people doing annoying things makes it more real to me. people aren't perfect and altruistic. even the best of us have baggage and flaws.
Maybe they went a little too far with it. But most everything made some sense when it came to decisions people made. Most. I did wince almost every time someone decided to trek out alone.

I actually liked the annoying people doing annoying things, it made things more realistic. If you took a bunch of people, launched them into space, & made them crash land on an unknown planet with unpredictable hazards, chances are that it won’t go smoothly.

I mean, I thought Skylar was annoying in Breaking Bad but that was one character. You can't have a show with a bunch of Skylars running around IMO.

Smith does have motivations for all the seemingly crazy stuff she does and it does get revealed before the end. Without going into spoilers, think of how observant she seems to be when it comes to the details of Will's relationship with the Robot and how that relationship was created.

But so why is it just a one way trip for the colonists if the crew can come and go? They just seemed to make it sound so permanent; as if there was no way to ever come back. Yet there's Don, schlepping it through space, like the universe's most talkative, most heroic if he may say so himself, ferryman.

I just finished watching this and for the most part was positive. Not the greatest scifi series ever but far from the worst. I thought for starters the visuals were great and more then I expect for a "made for TV" series. All the characters for the most part where great, my only beef was Will Robinson annoyed me.

I would much prefer they made the kids older(say like 16-23)

Only other Issue I might point out(but not the end of the world for me) is I found many episodes left on a big cliffhanger, and the resolution to that cliffhanger the very next episode was poorly done(or left to our imagination)

I mean, the colonists are planning on a one way trip. I imagine the fuel requirements are such that they don't account for bringing things back to earth.

I will put my reply in spoiler tags because my answer contains info from the last few episodes, read at own risk.....
it is established that the engine the Resulute uses to make the trip back and forth is from the alien race that the robot is from. It isn't established yet whether or not the humans have recreated the engine or are using the engine that crashed to Earth. There has also been references to problems with Earth's climate/atmosphere....so it appears that the government in charge of the Resulute are more concerned with getting people off of planet Earth that returning them to it. If it is the original alien engine and they have only the one....then they can't be sure of how long it will last and so will only be concerned with getting people off of Earth and ferried to Alpha Centauri.

Still have to watch the remaining 5 episodes...... but on a related news.. i was watching 1922 on netflix (thomas jane) and the actress who played mrs robinson on this series is also in this movie.

1922 is pretty damn good too.

god the end credit theme is so glorious and epic freaking love it

all of the music in the series was good but THIS was my fave bit and I loved how the 60s theme kicked in when stuff got real :awesome:
