I've heard good things about Cryptonomicon. I'm currently reading Broken Angels, a military SF novel by Richard Morgan. In this series, the human consciousness is stored in a little chip implanted at the base of the skull. They're called stacks.

There's some striking imagery early on of a military type standing cruciform over a pile of freshly harvested stacks - straight from the battlefield with bits of bone and nerve still attached. Also, an especially decorated officer was reduced to a literal mess - they reuploaded his stack in a freshly grown body, and he experienced some adverse effects...they did it too quickly, and he ended up crying and voiding himself from the psychological stress of it.

CRYPTONOMICON and the follow up novels are quite good but I really feel ANATHEM is so far his crown jewel. It's a story that takes place on an alternate version of Earth where all science is in the hands of an order of monastic styled monks who are not allowed the use of high technology, not even calculators for their scientific research or discovery. It's long but quite interesting. CRYPTONIICON probably has the best description of religion and helped to clarify my own atheism.
