Luck

Yeah, you're probably right. I still haven't gotten over Bored to Death's cancelation and now this happen. Stings like hell. :csad:

I'm still sad about Bored to Death's untimely departure. But I couldn't get into Luck and if they can't keep the horses safe, then any show is not worth that.

This is sad news but I can understand HBO's reasons, it's not an accessible show, not even compared to Milch's Deadwood, it's expensive, the soft ratings and the fact alone that three dead horses isn't good for PR. I figure HBO didn't want to dig themselves deeper in the grave and just cut loose the show quickly. It's a shame since with time this could've been something special but having a show circling around horse racing isn't a simple task.

Honestly, I find Milch intentionally tries to make his writing inaccessible and ponderous more than it needs to be. It's why Deadwood started great but its ratings dipped in S2 the more draconian it became and after a snoozefest of a third season it got canceled. Two tries of watching Luck told me it was going to be more of the same. It's still better than JFC, but his shows could be so much better if he didn't try so hard.

Just my opinion.

I wonder why they didn't take PETA's suggestion of using stock race footage for the majority of the races. That would've saved them a lot of headaches.

It could've work but I'm guessing Milch and Mann wouldn't be satisfied with anything less than the real deal. I wonder why they couldn't just suspense the show and tried to work on the premise for season 2, maybe change from horse racing to I dunno, maybe casino gambling, but I think in the end it got too convoluted for even HBO's liking and don't think it had the potential left.

I'm against cruelty to animals but I just don't understand why an entire show has to be cancelled because three horses died. Living things die from natural causes or accidental, or intentionally. Get more horses and move on with the show, rather than having people lose their jobs and bring more hardship on their families. The dead horses will serve to feed other animals and contribute to the food and chain of life.
