Lundgren's performance was typical of 80's action movies, but had very little to do with the Punisher other than his name.

Tom Jane's performance is true to the Punisher with minor tweaks in his history. Tom Jane is the Punisher and Lundgren is nothing more than a PINO.
True, I dont know what a PINO is, but era-wise they both fit the movie in their own way.
However, I do prefer Thomas Jane, he seems a bit more human.

I think Dolph's underrated. His film or performance wasn't Hollywoodised, and that's the great thing about it. Thomas Jane's Punisher on the other hand was tamed for Hollywood. He didn't kill as many bad guys as Dolph did, Dolph's Punisher just unleashed on everyone. The body count got higher and higher, and that, as a Punisher fan, is what I wanted. I got the comic feel from the '89 film, than I did the '04 film. Thomas was good, but Dolph was great...... In my opinion. :unishr:

Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, and very bad !

I remember reading in one of the film 'zines of the day that Dolph really embraced the role and was acting like the Punisher during the entire shoot, both on and off camera. He definitely had the brooding Frank down pat and had the makers of the film read any background on the character might've realized how awful their plot was. They had also thought that a Punisher [or any films hero] would not be believable if wearing a spandex type outfit. Even at that, they didn't need to abandon the skull completely.

I remember reading that in Comics Scene magazine way back in 1989. They actually said Lundgren was acting really weird and withdrawn during the shoot and was taking on some of Frank's qualities.

I saw this movie on tv. It wasnt anything special but it was interesting and fun for gritty action. Luis Gosset Jr paired with Lundrens dark humor punisher at least made it viewable.

And I didnt care about the lack of skull or comic resemblance

I havent seen the newer adaptation. Must get around to it.

And if anyone compares this with the awful catwoman for not following comics.. think again.

I'll vote "alright"

Now Universal Soldier was horrible lol

Dolph Lundgren is perhaps the worst actor in the history of cinema. The Swedish born strongman acts like he's made of molasses and looks about as good. Throughout the film Lundgren looks and acts like he's taken quite a few rides on the 'white pony'. He's skagrific for sure. I don't know if this is true or not, but he honestly looks like he's a friend to heroin. His eyes rimmed red, skin pale and waxy in every scene. (Side note: Lundgren's bio. It says he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to MIT in chemical engineering. Hey, being smart doesn't make you a good actor. Sorry Dolph. Ass.) Lundgren like with all his dumbass **** movies and the other actors gave no acting performance what so ever. Lundgren lumbers through his fights with the gracefulness of a crippled elephant, pounding and stabbing very, very slowly. Lundgren is so wooden, so amazingly morose, that he probably believes the best method of acting is just to sit there and sulk. Maybe he thinks the camera will capture all his wooden nuances and amplify them on the screen or something. Not to harp on this too much, but Dolph has a scene with a little girl who has NO LINES in which he tries to comfort her. I don't have to tell you who came out on top of the acting heap for that one, do I?

Whenever he opened his mouth, he seemed to stoicly read lines from cue cards. He didn't even act like the Punisher. He was to dreary and slow talking. The real Punisher is not this silent, brooding and doesn’t take forever to say a line or even one word. This Punisher is always seemingly unprepared. He runs out of ammo quite often or he is stuck using a 12-gauge when he needs a machine gun. I mean the Dolph Ludgren version is so laughably bad it's clearly a very low-budget late Rambo sub product with, it’s ******ed, plot and dialogue. Dolph Ludgren gives a new meaning to sleepwalk. Lundgren never has and never will act. Why do you think, he only does nothing but action B-movies that go out to video. Think about it not hard to figure out. All of his movies are complete ****. If anybody thinks that Lundgren is a good actor or even an actor........then you don't know what the F acting even is!!!!!

IMO he's not doing such a bad job in unisol... but he has VanDamme as a co-star so he may have clouded my vision... "I just want to eat!"

lol I know which movie id rather watch tho...

I just cant get that scene out of my head where the dead soldiers walk around like low budget zombies on fire... gawd lol

Punishers plot is straight forward and it unravels in a decent manner, so as much as to not scoff at the stupidity of it.

But if anyone says "Lundgren is a fantastic actor".... lmao

I guess if we're talking favorite Lundgren movies now, I would say I enjoy Showdown in Little Tokyo the most out of his other movies. Not that I have seen many. Him and Brandon Lee had some decent chemistry and you can't go wrong with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as the villain.

'Showdown in Little Tokyo' is a fave for me but mainly because of Brandon Lee, not Dolph.

I've got some love for 'I come in Peace' (a.k.a. 'Dark Angel) though.

Fun concept and a decent score. And Dolph is alright in it.

Yeah, we know Dolphs' far from being Olivier and he's never gonna win an oscar but he's not the 'worst actor in the history of cinema'.

He's better than alot of the Troma guys. :O

Seriously though, he was pretty decent in 'Pentathon'.

I forgot about I Come in Peace. I liked that movie a lot too. I don't know why they changed the title though.

Dolph Lundgren was great as the Punisher, the movie wasn't as good as the latest but for the 80's it was great. He was gritty and it had some cool scenes in it.
