"MacGyver" creator Lee David Zlotoff announced at Maker Faire 2008 this weekend that a big budget "MacGyver" movie is in the planning stages.

According to Gizmodo, Zlotoff mentioned he ended up with the movie rights years ago (extremely uncommon), giving him full control over the film.

Further specifics were not mentioned, and no formal announcement has been made.

Do we really need a MacGyver movie when you have a great show like Burn Notice on USA which is essentially MacGyver updated for the 21st century?

Yeah, I don't really get what was ever so great or exceptional about MacGuyver that could succesfully translate into a movie today.

I mean, the main shtick of the show was a guy who works for this agency, goes to investigate something and gets into a dangerous situation, which he resolves through the use of a penknife and duct tape.

I don't see a major blockbuster movie going with the penknife/duct tape angle in the big third act set piece, so if you take that away, what's left? Generic-Action-Hero-Movie #37991052...

I assume it'll either be played for laughs like Starsky and Hutch, or they'll update it so he's actually having to concoct stuff with just literal spare parts, only done in more realistic light. I'm trying to think about who would make a good Macgyver.

I can't see them doing this without something from RDA in there somewhere

I loved this series as a kid, and would love to see a big budget movie (if done right).

As a silly fanboy, I'm gonna suggest Nathan Fillion as MacGyver.

I cant believe that they would even consider making this into a movie:o:o

I'm usually fine with remakes...but honestly...in this case. If Richard Dean Anderson isn't Mcgyver...I have no interest in watching this.

"How did you do that, MacGyver?"

"I fashioned a miniature nuclear reactor compiling a toothpick, some Big League Chew, and a calculator battery."

"You've done it again."

Question: will Patty and Selma have a cameo?

;)

I love MacGyver, it's the only one of those old 80's action series i can still watch without cringing b/c he wasn't a plug in 2D "type", he was a full character. I'm not the fanboy type but i just can't imagine anyone other than RDA as MacGyver.

Yeah, I tend to agree. Sadly the producers will probably cast Ashton Kutcher or something. :csad:

Totally agree. I want this to happen but WITH RDA.

hehe...I just thought of something worse. They'll bring RDA in on the film...but he won't play MacGyver and will instead play MacGyver's DAD with a very small, side-kick role.

The Hollywood Reporter says that New Line Cinema is bringing MacGyver to the big screen.

Raffaella De Laurentiis, daughter of Dino De Laurentiis, is producing through her Raffaella Productions along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff. Dino De Laurentiis is executive producing.

"MacGyver" ran on ABC from 1985-92. Richard Dean Anderson, later of "Stargate: Atlantis" and "SG-1" fame, starred as an incredibly resourceful secret agent for the Phoenix Foundation who frequently would escape from dangerous situations with ingenious and lightning-quick engineering trickery.

No writer is attached, but the studio hopes to find a script that can acknowledge how the concept has staked a place into pop culture yet still makes for a serious and fun adventure movie.

"We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise," said New Line's Richard Brener.

Aren't there better shows they could make into a movie?

I cant believe that they would even consider making this into a movie:o:o

In a time when Hollywood is preparing movies based on just about everything, even a movie based on Monopoly, or are remaking just about every movie ever made, or doing big screen versions of old tv-series, nothing is surprising anymore. :)
