The September issue of Premiere magazine has an interview with Hugh Jaclman and there's a little about why he wants to make Wolverine. As that rambles on a bit without being very specific, I'll just post a little:
I would love the atmosphere to be more like an independent movie.
...
I have this gut feeling we can make a phenomenal movie about what I think is a gift of a character. I feel that audiences have never been given the full picture about this guy.
…
It will probably be a prequel. I think the character has moved on too much now, we need to go back to his origins. It doesn’t need to be as big a movie as X3, it doesn’t need to have as many special effects.
Reading his comments on X2/X3 and The Prestige gives a pretty good idea of where his sensibilities lie as a producer. He doesn't like waste. He likes to spend time acting rather than waiting to act, to focus on the job rather than comfort.

I'd love to know which directors he's considering. My guess is it'll me more of an indie type, up-and-coming director rather than someone mainstream.
