Making it Political just for stirring up Controversy

Wait until Watchmen comes out. People will draw parallels to 9-11 even though it was written in the 80's.

Bush is Xerxes? LOLOLOLOLOL! That would mean the Spartans are the resistance fighters in Iraq? It's kind of hard to see a Spartan strapping a bomb to himself and blowing up a bus full of women and children. Ephialtes, I can see doing that.

First, Bush isn't a stand in figure for Xerxes. If anything, Bush will be infamous for his own type of hubris. No need to compare.

Second, it's a cool F'ing movie. Why does anyone need to throw in modern politics into this?

Hmm...

I personally felt hit over the head with the "freedom isn't free," "he's dying for his country, why aren't you?" type slogans I hear in support of "The Iraq War is the right thing to do!" And I honestly don't buy that...

At no point did I get the idea of Xerxes being Bush, though when it's spoken of I can kind of see the parallels, since the Spartans were acting independent of their government and Xerxes was invading, but Xerxes demands, stance, beliefs and particular type of hubris seemed quite different from that of the American Government...

I wonder if some of these themes: convert to our belief system, seperatist movements, etc... are these constants in all or most wars? Perhaps they are unavoidable parts of epic human conflict...

7 feet tall....gay....dark skin....piercings.....lotsa gold....that's Bush alright!

The only reason it reaks political undertones is because freedom is a concept that is alive today.

The Persians did that to the Greek city states, the Greeks and Macedonians did the same, so did the Turks, the Mongols (which were made up of many different tribes, not just Mongols) the Muslim armies, the Crusaders, the British, the French, the Dutch, the Japanese, the Chinese.

No matter where you go your gonna hear about massive armies attacking natives 'fighting for freedom.'

Theres many stories like this in history. Two major ones (never had big movies made of them) being - the African Zulu (unless you count Shaka Zulu) defeat of a superior super power imperialist British & native force, and the Afghan British and Afghan Russian wars (unless you count Rambo III) that led to the defeat of two of the worlds super powers - Great Britain and the Soviet Union.

The only reason this movie is getting the light of day is because 1 - Frank Miller is a great writer and 2, Snyder had the vision to pull it off - no political undertones involved at all!
