How should the Mandarin be portrayed in the upcomming movie? Is there any to protray the Mandarin without some people thinking him a racist sterotype?

Fudge, I didn't even see this thread. I just posted my ideas on the Mandarin Casating thread. Oh well, I'll post it again.

Tony Stark travels to the Middle East to view a display of his company's latest EMP (ElectroMagnetic Pulse) bomb, a weapon with the capibility to give the U.S. army the upper hand in thier current conflict.

In his helicopter ride to the demonstration, Stark is drugged, his helicopter hijacked by Muslim terrorists.

Stark wakes up in an underground military bunker. His captors interrogate him, obviously wanting the secrets to the U.S.'s new weapon. Stark obviously refuses. The leader of the group stabs him with a piece of metal, piercing his heart. Stark, dying from internal bleeding and heart malfunction, is given an option. Stark must build the weapon he designed, in order to obtain the operation to survive. If he fails to comply, he will die in the desert.

Stark, knowing that he will die one way or the other, decides to help them, knowing that it will give him access to tools and supplies that he needs to escape. For three months, Stark builds in secret his suit of armor. Waiting for the perfect moment, Stark attacks his captors and manages to escape the bunker and make it to an abandoned helicopter. He takes off his suit, no longer charged, and flies the helicopter home.

Stark arrives back in New York City, where the world was seemingly forgot him. He arrives at his office, sees his assistant Pepper Potts, and reclaims his place as CEO.

News about his apparent "resurrection" spreads fast. Across town at Tong Corp, Zhang Tong (CEO), is furious. He reveals that he set up the capture of Stark in the Middle East so that he could overtake Stark Enterprises and have access to their weapon designs.

--A bunch of stuff happens: Military attacks Iron Man after his heroic save at the Brooklyn Bridge, alcoholism, playboy persona, bankruptcy of Tong Corp., Zhang finds out Iron Man's identity, etc.--

Zhang, mentally unstable after the lose of his company, hires a professional to break into Stark Enterprises and steal the designs for the Iron Man suit. The man proves successful and retrieves the plans, bringing them to Zhang. Zhang shoots the man, after he has the blueprints. Examining the designs, Zhang learns of the chestplate that keeps Stark's heart beating.

At Stark Enterprises the next day, Zhang arrives, going by the name of Mandarin. He is dressed in an exoskeleton-type version of the Iron Suit (Think Gustav Graves in the climax of Die Another Day). He makes his way to the top floor, where Stark and Pepper are. He grabs Pepper, choking her. He tells Stark (refers to him as Iron Man) to meet him at Stark Enterprises Facility a mile off the coast.

When Iron Man arrives, he finds that Mandarin has Stark Enterprise's EMP Bomb ready to fire at Stark Enterprise HQ. Mandarin and Iron battle, with Pepper chained to a crate. Mandarin uses his gauntlets on his hands to shoot a pulsor beam at Stark's chestplate, creating severe damage. Mandarin walks up to him, mocking him as he lay there, dying.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Here's how the dialogue would go)

Mandarin: I'm better thank you, Stark. Bested you in every way. And now, everything you have, your girlfriend, your company, your life...will all go up in smoke. I'm stronger thank you, Iron Man. Everything you are... and greater.

Iron Man: You...forgot one...thing...Zhang.

Iron Man shoots a pulsor beam at a crate hanging above Mandarin. The crate falls, crushing a screaming Mandarin and killing him instantly.

Iron Man: You're not...made of iron.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Iron Man would then fly off to stop the EMP bomb that just rocketed off. He shoots the bomb down, keeping a good distance away from it. However, as it explodes in midair, Iron Man is caught in the shockwave, causing his suit to malfunction and fail, plummeting him to the waters below.

After the massive battle, search teams search the waters but to no avail. Iron Man is dead.

At Stark Enterprises, Tony does not show up to work for a week. At his home, he is lying in a bed, hooked up to IV's. He is in enough stable condition long enough for him to put on his spare chestplate.

He returns to work, resuming his postition as CEO.

The film ends with Iron Man flying towards the screen.

Not to rain on your parade or anything but that all sucks really im sorry.

Take a look at the "Lady Mandarin" storyine in some issues of UNCANNY X-MEN by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee to see the perfect way o portray the Mandarin. In that story, Mandarin was dressed in a 3 piece suit and was using other means to further his criminal activities (I think he started up his own company).

Tony Stark's orgin story should be he gets captured and is forced to make the suit. Then that whole orgin goes down but by middle easterns. Mandarin comes in later as a buissiness client while his real motive is to get the Iron man Suit. We later find out that he is the one that staged the capture of Tony Stark.

Exactly.

why cant he just be a wealthy business men, financing chineese freedom fighters so tha he can usurp a position of powerin the new government?

I posted this on another thread, but thought it'd be appropriate here, too:

If you're gonna make a realistic Iron Man film, then here's my .02:

There is no single "Mandarin". Mandarin, while believed to be one man, is actually a small group of techno-barons who work on cutting edge technology for the highest bidder. Whereas the world at large believes the Mandarin to be a single person, the group is actually changing identity on a regular basis in an effort to stay ahead of the various intelligence agencies that would like to control or shut down their operation.

In order to protect the organization, none one of the members know the identity of each other, but own/wear signet ring as a marker (hence, The "Rings" of the Mandarin). One of the film's subplots - and a way to lean back toward the film's comic roots - would involve one of the Mandarin members learning the identity of the others and then swiftly taking them out in a ruthless effort to consolidate power/business authority. This final Mandarin would be the third act nemesis for Ol' Shell-head.
