Comics Marc Guggenheim's latest explanation for why some folks hate Brand New Day

This is an insane thing for him to say, to conclude about fans who aren't buying the reboot, anyway you cut it. Period.

Stupid stupid rat creatures!

I like how this thread's title "Marc Guggenheim's latest explanation for why some folks hate Brand New Day..." is not really Marc Guggenheim's explanation for why some folks hate Brand New Day.

It's merely an attitude that he has about the people that don't like it... not an explanation.

But isn't the fact that he's stating an opinion about why people don't like it be considered his explanation for why people hate the current direction? Although, to be fair, "explanation" could easily be re-worded as "theory" and "hate" for dislike.

Hey stillanerd, for someone who is quick to judge somebody for what they have said/written, you should be extra careful on how you present something yourself... otherwise, you might find yourself in the same boat.

:whatever: :whatever: :whatever:

Oh, I've been in that situation before, TMOB, so I know the pitfalls. I will admit it is a character flaw of mine to sometimes be too reactionary when I come across something before I try to sit back and carefully think about what is actually being said. So it's good for you to remind me of my faults from time to time, so don't think I don't appreciate your criticism.

And in Guggenheim's case, I understand the argument he was attempting to make--that if people who are so opposed to Peter and MJ being in a civil union as opposed to being married (although technically they are in neither one) then, logically, they should also be for the rights for homosexuals to marry in real life given the distinctions between marriages and civil unions (which as I said, is an argument based on a non sequiter). But even so, in trying to be cute about his critics, he presented a pretty fallacious argument which made sweeping generalizations about his readers.

Instead of accepting and looking at the real reasons, which have been posted everywhere (And he admits to lots of hate mail about this reboot)...instead he comes up with....

DENIAL.

Instead, he comes up with a conspiracy "THEORY" linking us to..............gay marriages. Of all things?

THAT is why I am NOT buying??? REALLY????????

Now i know, and knowing is half the battle. Glad the writers of this reboot are aware of the REAL reasons i am not buying. I wonder if Captivated and others yet realize the TRUTH of why they're not buying it also?

Thanks for posting this Stillanerd. It speaks for itself. No reason to justify what he said, or for posting. It is good to be aware of what they're saying.

Again..............total denial...!

Thanks. And I'd also like to point out that if you look at the date on the original article where the statement came from, it says September 10, 2008. A thread on CBR picked it up on Spetember 19 and it showed up on the Spider-Man comicboards (the thread is now currently locked because the thread title was even more inflamatory than mine) only yesterday.

Another conclusion that can be made from his argument:

Since he and the whole of the company of Marvel is for BND, and those that are against it are for same-sex marriage, that would technically mean that himself and all of Marvel is against same-sex marriage.

This is a major reason why Marc should have let this argument go through his head, process it, and then throw it away for the bullcrap it is.

He should just say like you said, that he said something dumb, admit it, say he is sorry, and then let's put an end to it. That's it.

There is no way to justify it.

Trying to turn his OWN statement back on the fans, and then blame them even more for his OWN words, makes the whole thing worse.

People don't like the reboot for MANY reasons, none of them related to gay marriages, one side or another.

I'm trying not to hate on the guym as he clearly didn't think through what he was saying. Still, I think he should have just posted on his blog with a little "What was I thinking when I said that" and been done with it.

Still, it's alot like saying that "If you don't read BND, then you hate puppies...and you don't hate puppies.....do you?"

The two things are totally unrelated. I'll give the guy a break, but the burn he got on his own blog, while harsh, was kind of right.

Hey Doc, if you think it's stupid, then don't read it.

Once you've stopped reading it, do everybody a favour and stop criticizing what you don't read. It'll make the SHH message boards a nicer place to visit.

Cheers...

:yay:

I don't buy it, and for a million good reasons. That does not take away my right to critize what I read about the absolute drubbing of my favorite superhero of all time. Don't like what I write? Put me on ignore. That's YOUR right.

This board will be a nicer place to read when they stop SCREWING WITH THE DAMN CHARACTER.

Saw this on another site....funny...well put together point he was making.

Technically, it wasn't Guggenheim's blog but rather a post he made on a on someone's livejournal blog (although the user identifying himself was labeled as anonymous). So technically, he (if it was him) got burned on someone else's blog.

I didn't tell you to stop buying it... I know you don't buy it.

I simply asked you to stop reading it.

See the difference?

People aren't readin' 'cause the smart ones won't support a crappy BS story like One More Day and anythin' that came from it.

And yes, I'm PRO gay marriage. Why should only straight people get to suffer? Seriously, though, I am fer it, so Guggenheim can kiss off. Eli Stone is the only decent thing this schmuck has done creatively.

Too bad... while OMD was a crap-fest, what came from it has been golden... to bad you can't see beyond your blinders.

:yay:

Well i personally wouldnt say its "golden", but it hasnt been bad, some of the stories have been pretty good, in particular Slott's. His opening arc with Mcniven was very solid, his paper doll arc with Marcos Martin was pretty good, nothing special but good, and so far NWTD is rocking. So i will give it that. But besides Slott's stories, everything else is pretty sub-par. Guggenheim writes Spidey like an 8 year old, Gale writes spidey like an idiot, and Zeb Wells...well his story was pretty good too. So overall, BND is not that bad, and has a lot of potential, its just, the continuity gaps and inconsistencies are ruining my total enjoyment of these stories, plus the fact that everybody, especially peter, has been dumbed down considerably. Its hard to believe that this is the same Peter who beat the Kingpin within an inch of his life without breaking a sweat. Spidey is supposed to be a funny character but he's also supposed to be bad-ass at the same time, and he's actin' like a serious amateur in these stories. I would just like to see a return to a more mature, seasoned spider-man. After all, this is the guy who's beaten every single marvel hero and remains undefeated.

I think the way he had taken down Bullseye... especially after getting shot as well as taking a spider-tracer to the neck... as well as taking a beat down by both Venom & Anti-Venom... showed me a well experienced battle savy Spider-Man.

:yay:

And stop looking at the conitnuity gaps as something to ruin your enjoyment... turn it around and look forward to the mystery behind what happened during that 3-4 month period between OMD & BND... the explanations may be lame, but at least attempts are being made to connect the dots.

:yay:

I wish i could be as optimistic as you TMOB, but i am giving it a shot, like i said, there are some very bright spots in BND that gives me hope. I guess when you grow up to a certain type of spiderman (i'm a 90's baby), a sudden change like this can be jarring, i miss Mj and i miss the marriage. But i love the character enough to see what's in store for him. I'll see how Slott does with the Harry Osborn revelation story in december and take it from there.

Bigoted AND illogical.

Great writers you've got employed there, Marvel!

Marc Guggenheim said it himself. All pro-BNDers are homophobes. Hope you bigots can sleep at night. :P

Thats exactly what users like Farmie have been complaining about the whole time. :csad:

That we have to twist things around and play pretend to enjoy the stories these days...

readers shouldnt be the one who have to be creative, it should be the writers....

But that's not what I said...

If you just look at that blanket 3-4 months as a mystery, then the continuity gaps will eventually fill themselves out...

Or they get swept under the rug and never spoken about... (around the next big assed event that will shatter Spidey's core)
