Sega has made the rumor official: Sonic and Mario are returning for “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games” later this year, with a few added gimmicks.

Sega announced a Wii and DS pair of sequels to the last year’s “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games” this morning. The Wii version of the new game, which is set in Vancouver, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, has Balance Board support, according to the press release. And it also includes new characters. Which ones? Sega isn’t saying just yet.
Here are your key details from the official press release:
Developed by SEGA of Japan, under the guidance of Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will take players to lifelike Olympic venues where they can choose from a legendary cast of playable characters, including new faces to the series to be revealed later this year. Following the phenomenal worldwide popularity of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide, this fresh gaming experience will feature completely new Olympic Winter Games events from the official competition schedule including Alpine Skiing and Speed Skating with more events announced throughout the year.
It should be noted that the first “Mario & Sonic” game, despite Miyamoto’s supervision, was not well-reviewed. The Wii version has a Metacritic score of 67. According to Wii usage numbers crunched by MTV Multiplayer, as of February 1, 2009, the first “Mario & Sonic” game was averaging almost 11 hours of average play time since users first rented or purchased it. (For comparison’s sake, “Wii Sports” usage was averaging just under 34 hours per player.)
Sequels of video games tend to be better than the originals. With ample development time and expert supervision, “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games” has a good chance of being better than its predecessor.
To watch the non-gameplay first trailer for Mario and Sonic’s latest game, go to the official Olympic Video Games site. Anyone see any new characters in there?

I'm looking forward to this, the first one was rather great actually.

cool..loved the first one..this should be a must!

I have the first one, and it was alot of fun when the in-laws came to visit and we had 4 players going. But playing solo wasn't much fun, and I had to do it in order to unlock new events. Maybe this follow-up will make solo campaign more interesting to play.
