I'm excited about this actually
My only worry is that Mark Millar isn't pulling some idiotic Abrams or Burton style crap where they are changing all the traditional elements around like with Lex being kryptonian or Jor-El being a bad guy or with there being some ONE or some religious legacy nonsense or Krypton surviving...
If his planned trilogy is sticking dead true to the comic origins and to stuff like Birthright and Man of Steel I have no complaints at all...
Trust me, Millar knows more about Superman and has more love for him than Byrne, Jurgens, Rucka and Carlin combined.
It's not really a matter of who loves the character more... I'm sure Byrne, Jurgens, Rucka, and Carlin all love the character very much ... but it's more a matter of which interpretation do they love.
I really love Byrne's reboot but there are elements from what Waid has done that I'd like brought in (very few - I'm not a waid fan) and there are elements from what Timm/Dini did that I thought were excellent.
I've read Millar's views on the character and I'm a bit worried about his take and there are some things in that same interview that turned me on.
My point is simple - don't assume anything with Millar ... or any writer the studios bring in.
Nolan proved himself but there was a lot of doubt before Begins as to whether he would get the character or whether it would just be more cr@p. We were fortunate. Nolan brought in Goyer and the two of them crafted a film style and sensibility that totally works for Batman.
That same synergy needs to come together for Superman. I think I know how it has to be handled but then.. who doesn't?!
Again, don't assume anything about a writer (especially if you're just using it as an excuse to vent against a different writer - hence the Byrnehate)
I would say the Hollywood inner circle probably think of themselves as big deals. I mean if you're not part of it, your movies are usually straight to video. Lots of good actors are out of this circle and some bad actors are in it. I would say though that it is a fair argument that if a director can raise up 70 million dollars for a film by making a few phone calls he can be a big deal in a few people's eyes. My instincts say that Vaughn is really connected.
I can't speak for anybody else, but he doesn't get me excited doing Superman. Bryan Singer was a bigger name at the time he was announced for Superman, he actually causes some excitement, but we know how that turned out. Vaughn just doesn't do that in my opinion.

see? this is just BS to me. it looks like he is just talking.talking without thinking. With Millar its strange because he wants to be the writer but he talks as if he is the director and head of casting as well. I'm also not to keen on the "i've been planning this for my whole life". I hope he is able to take criticisms in regards to what he has been working on. Ultimately it seems clear like a combination of Bryne, Waid, and STAS is what people are looking for with a supervillain. I'm convinced they can get any writer to do just that. I wouldnt be surprised if there is a script leak this time around to gauge the fan reaction.
Sir, I am not saying that these guys don't care about Superman, it's just that Superman comes not really at the top in their "list of favourite characters". For example Byrne probably prefers Batman, Captain America, X-Men, F4, Hulk ... and then somewhere comes Superman. Dito for guys like Dini & Co.
Millar seems to regard Superman as his number 1 guy and that is the good thing.
Byrne isn't much of a Batman guy. I honestly believe he's more of a Superman fan. His Batman tends to be the bright, happy version from the early 60's. I would agree, however, that the FF are higher in his preferences than Superman. That doesn't mean that he isn't a big Superman fan and that the character doesn't have a high ranking in his fav column.
Dini does well with all of DC's characters. It's hard to say who he favours. Don't be swayed by the fact the first DC project Timm and Dini worked on was the animated Batman series. If any, I think Dini has a real soft spot for Jonn Jon'zz.
And one last thought - why would any of these writers have to choose who their favourite is? Isn't it possible for all (including Millar) to like them all equally but for different reasons?
Again, Millar may be a godsend or he may just send the character down a path that only a few of us like. It's a regular cr@pshoot.
But at least it isn't the devil we know - Singer - who failed to satisfy most of us.
I knew Singer would fail. I was absolutely sure when I heard that Routh was cast.
I don't think he is a good director, he didn't even like the X-Men before he made the movies. And I think the X-Men movies are mediocre at best.
So, according to what you've just said -you already knew of Routh (and as such had a well-informed opinion on his merits and failings) at the time of his casting. I assume this as I find it hard to believe that you would draw the conclusion that Singer would fail because he had simply cast an unknown.
Either that or that crystal ball of yours must be amazing.
In that case, would I be correct in thinking that as you don't think Singer is a good director, you don't think that the critical acclaim Singer garnered for 'The Usual Suspects' and 'Apt Pupil' was deserved?
What, was it all just a fluke?
When Singer was announced I was worried that the movie would suck.
When Routh was cast I was absolutely sure.
Got it?
"The Usual Suspects" is his only good movie. And it relies too heavy on the twist. And all that doesn't mean he can make a good Superman movie. Sorry. He is overrated and lives from his X-Men movie fanboys
No - you havent satisfactorily explained how you came to that conclusion; until you do, it's basically like saying something will suck without offering any account of why that would be the case.
You got that?
You said that he isnt a good director.
If he wasn't at least competant at directing - he wouldnt have been able to make, by your own admission, a 'good movie' like 'The Usual Suspects'.
So, basically, the main reasons for your viewpoints are 'feelings', 'instinct' and the view that Singer just got 'lucky'?
about what... he hasn't even gotten the job yet nor pitched it... I'm hoping he gets the job though now... would certainly be better than that little piss Bryan Singer....
only good 6 mins out of SR was the plane sequence...
