Mark Millar's Many Thoughts On Superman

But we've just said the samething. trying to maintain a normal life would be trying to fit in.

I'm talking more about his actual burden to do something because he can. Not whether or not he's like everyone else. There's a difference between doing one's perceived duty because you feel you have to, and how far that goes, and fitting in.

I'd say Clark's biggest internal struggle is about maintaining his faith in humanity in a
gray and cynical world.

It's arguable. The "burden" is a more important element.

This is Millar's latest post on the subject:

"Groan. As if I'd just end it with him the last man alive and feeling like ****. There's a lot more to it than that, the scope of the story simply being the beginning of time to the end of time, really.

MM"

Then some poster asked with it will have relation to this Jim Steranko story:
http://theages.superman.nu/400/exile.php

His response:

"There'd be elements of that, but not entirely. The Steranko story had a huge effect on me as a kid and you can see it in the final ten pages or so of Red Son where we just go further and further into Superman's future. Also, remember that this isn't downbeat. The idea is that Superman lives forever, but then it moves into something else and it's actually pretty wonderful. Nothing to do with time-travel or anything, but this absolutely doesn't close the franchise by any means. I wanted to do something that was part Godfather/ part 2001.

Anyway, it's ****ing great. New news on it at all, but then no decision has been made on Superman in the months since they first opened a dialogue with my director when Bryan left. Anything could happen. I know they're talking to at least one other director and OF COURSE it'll be a reboot. Anyone who says "we don't need to see Superman's origin for a modern audience" is either clearly a hardcore fanboy who will OBVIOUSLY know it, over 30 or didn't take a confused kid to Superman Returns. More time has elapsed since Donner's origin in 1978 than the 50s TV show origin and Donner obviously knew he had to reinvent the mythology for a new generation. I have Superman, Brainiac, Darkseid, Luthor, Metallo, The Parasite and Doomsday to explain over our three picture idea and it all needs to be done as simply as possible. Plus 45 minutes on Krypton with Scarlet Jungles, Jewel Mountains, Brainiac stealing Kandor, etc.

Trust me. If this happens it will be great. If it doesn't I have five flicks of my own invention to keep busy with right now. But nobody will bring more passion to this than the team I've been asked to be a part of.

MM"

What we need is three things answered from Millar.

1. Hints as to who "his" director is first and foremost without giving us the name.

2. Who the "other" director is he heard WB's has talked with.

3. A script review of his script that will leave out spoilers.

This is the only way us fans can get a feel for what he wants to do with the Superman franchise and give it the yay or nay.

Singer left? I guess when Matt said heads will roll, he wasn't kidding.

A reboot it is... make it a good one, WB.

Millar is a Super talent...BUT...
Mark Millar gets off on you guys talking about him good bad or indifferent.
As I said before...He will NEVER get this movie made.
I know and heard this on good authority.

You guys can waste better time in a better thread.
Im sure he is in here reading this.:whatever:

why will he never do it?
because of those interviews?

If Singer left, then why is IESB reporting, in the interview done with Routh, that he's (Singer) been signed on to do the sequel?

Don't ask me. I'm just going by what Miller said.

I'm guessing WB wants to Nolanize superman, create a super smart movie about a man who can disguise himself by wearing glasses, etc.

I'm ok with the superboy thing now after taking time to think deeply on it so either way it's fine.

If Singer ever came back it'sd take extreme creative skill to back himself off that corner that superkid put him in. I don't think death will cut it there is no way you'd see a kid die in a Superman movie not even one that's half alien.

What I don't get is that if Millar wanted us to back his take on Superman for a film....then he should send out a spoiler proof script leak of his treatment.

Lets see what he's got to offer!

We need something to talk about :csad:

I'm not going to lie, I really do wish that this thread would close and that CS and Hype would stop reporting on this madman's Attention ****eism.

People with the disorder should not be encouraged and should seek help from a morticain.

The best thing Millar has said:

"Anyone who says "we don't need to see Superman's origin for a modern audience" is either clearly a hardcore fanboy who will OBVIOUSLY know it, over 30 or didn't take a confused kid to Superman Returns."

Mark would still keep bumbling Clark and that would be a mistake in a reboot imo.

I've never thought the stumbling Clark was that much of a bad thing. It does help to throw suspicion off of him. But if you want a reboot to be as far away from the Reeve Superman take on the character, then he does have to go though.

The Dean Cain version of Clark (which imo SV Clark is getting closer too) is truly the way to go. It makes him more relatable but still has his moments. Clark is the man, Superman is what he does.

Accidentally using his powers as Clark because it's an everyday thing for him, or overusing his power on accident i.e sneezing... etc

That kind of stuff can be done and get decent laughs without him being bumbling.

Clark should just be a nice guy who is competent at his job and even competitive with Lois to a degree.

I agree that a "non" bumbling Clark is probably the best way to go....I was just saying that I really didn't have a problem with the bumbling one like others did.

And....I happened to like Dean Cain's performance in Lois and Clark....unlike many others here also.

Maybe a poll should be put up ranking the different preformances of Clark by the different actors. It would answer the question of who's Clark is the most popular. ... at least on these boards.

My hands down fav is Dean Cain followed closely by Welling and George Reeves. None of those Clarks are bumbling.

Can Welling's Clark Kent be classified as the same as the others? He's playing Young Clark Kent before he takes up the dual personas.

No, he can not. Because Smallville is a big joke, just like Lois & Clark AKA The New Adventures of Mini-Man.
