Mark Millar's Many Thoughts On Superman

Making an "8 hour epic" where in the end Superman dies, is not really how I want to see him translate to the big screen.

agreed.
If Millar wants to show he can write a Superman movie... he needs to go back to the drawing board. (I know you're watching this, you arrogant bastard. YES! GO write a movie, not a graphic novel!)

Source that Supes dies?

I cant remeber the site where i read the article but it basically told Millars plan was that the plan for the movies were to expand over the course of Supermans life and the ending would be Superman left alone on Earth having outlived everyone watching the sun go supernova (and as a result going red, hence Supes losing his powers) which in the end winds up destroying the earth and killing him.

The article didn't say that. You are speculating that would be the outcome of the movie but there is nothing to substantiate that.

Yes cause thats what i do in my spare time i sit around wondering "hmm whats the most likely way Mark Millar would finish his 8 hour Superman epic"

Nothing wrong with doing that even though that would be a depressing ending but you presented this ending as something you read in an article which is incorrect. Plus why would Millar reveal the ending to his epic?

He may have not come outright and say that Superman would die, but he would be boot deep in trouble if this happened:

I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."

he is alone and loses hes powers.
now thats epic. just end it with a shot of superman closing hes eyes.

i bet kids around the world would go crazy.

kid at mc donalds: yo oy yo you saw the new superman movie? superman closed hes eyes. woooo that was so cool. mommy look at me. i am closing my eyes.

About your first question (who is the director), and Michael Bay rumors, Millar said:

"Hi Russ, but you must be getting mixed up, bro. Stylistically, he'd be amazing and he's good at spectacle (which is what was missing from the last one). I'm actually a huge fan of Bay. Not into Bad Boys 2 or Pearl Harbour, but The Rock is one of my fave action movies EVAH!

PS It's not Bay. The director will be named soon because if we don't have Superman by January we're jumping onto something else together and then he can be unmasked."

About your third questions... forget it! He will never reveal anything more detailed like a review or anything (even it is a spoiler free) simply because i dont think he would like to tell his story to everyone.

Ultimately, he is going to give more details, but only after Warner says YES or NO to his project, and he be able to move forward to other projects. Mabe even adapt his story to comics. How knows?

Thats too bad that he won't leak out a minor script review that is spoiler free. If we overwhelmingly like his take, then WB's might give it the green light.

since when do we matter?

In the end WE do matter, because WE pay to see these films and WE decide whether or not a film will make a significant profit.

SR wasn't a terrible film by any means, but it was an underwhelming Superman film, that lacked re watch value. The Dark Knight certainly didn't lack re watch value and if WB's wants to make a profit on a Superman film and make up for the lackluster SR....then they better damn well listen to fans and the general public.

:applaud PREACH IT BROTHER!!!
I love how you described the film as "an underwhelming Superman film".
I'm pulling for the studio too ignore some of US SUPERMAN fans and repeat Singer's film.

What's the deal with the obsession with a depowered Superman?
Millar should have Nirubu return an cause the sun too turn red like Krypton's sun that would be epic. Than Superman can close his eyes for good.

I wouldn't mind the ending that Millar alludes to upon further reflection...however, it should be saved as the last film of a series. Not the guaranteed ending to just a trilogy of films. I personally would like to see a Superman series that comfortably and respectfully reaches five or six films before they finish it off with Kingdom Come and use it there or if not that then at the end of Superman's solo run. Not having a built-in cap to limit it to three films is the way I'd want to go. I want a Harry Potter-level of repeat business with good writers consistently on board to get something going and the talent returning each time to keep the ship afloat. None of this "sit-around-with-our-thumbs-up-our-rumps" kind of stuff. A film series with a genuine sense of continuity. Dare to dream, I guess.

Mark Millar posted a little more of what he wanted to do for the trilogy.

Brainiac, Darkseid, Luthor, The Parasite, Metallo, ancient Krypton, the Bottle City of Kandor and Superman's entire life from the moment he's rumoured by Rao-ist Prophets to the end of time where he finally closes his eyes.

Or, of course, you could get more of that cute kid from Superman Returns

I've turned down every brand-name I've been offered over the last year, Superman being the only one that ever really tickled my fancy. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, we'll be focusing on my usual self-generated movies and the director and I will start something new in January as a Plan B. I'd rather NOT make a Superman movie than do a bad one with someone else. It just means too much to me to be on some bog-standard sequel to Returns or deal with a jobbing director who doesn't see this as his ultimate ambition.

But WB have made no decisions yet (and I heard this right from the top) so there's still everything to play for. Fingers crossed they do the right thing

I think the scene with the Rao-ist prophets is what Mark Millar was referring to when he talked about the movie starting 1,000 years before Kal-El is born. That will probably take about a ten minutes and then he will probably bring the story up to Brainiac when he arrives on Krypton and then whole Jor-El, Lara and Kal-El part of the story. That's what i'm predicting anyways.

Ok, so...Mark Millar wants to use some elements of the Superman mythology.

And...

Definitely sounds like Millar wants to make a truly epic Superman story, which sounds intriguing....however more details need to emerge regarding his story, and this director of his.

Millar needs to give the fans a hint as to who this director of his is. Then I think we can have an idea if his take has a chance of being any good or not.

Lets hope it's not Emmerich. Ugh..

He linked this site so that his fans would vote for him to do his "8-hour epic." What a sad little man.

Someone at Bluetights suggested that Millars director may possibly be Doug Liman?

Interesting if true....

I would be happy if "Millars' director" is one of these three...

1. JJ Abrams
2. Zach Snyder
3. Doug Liman
