Mark Neveldine directing Jonah Hex

Count me in the group that doesn't care if it's done realistically or with a supernatural twist, as long as it's awesome.

...
FilmSchoolRejects has gotten their hands on a concept photo of Thomas Jane as Jonah Hex in Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s announced adaptation of the DC comic book.

And while both this photo and Jane’s casting have not been officially (or even unofficially) confirmed, it seemed too juicy not to pass along. I wasn’t a big fan of Jane’s Punisher (or any of the big screen Punishers for that matter — so it’s likely not his fault) but I think this role could really suit him.

Created by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga, Jonah Hex is a former Confederate officer turned gun-slinging bounty hunter anti-hero whose face was horrifically scarred on his right side. The comic book, which was introduced in the 1970’s, and Neveldine/Taylor have said that they don’t plan on “making a straight-ahead Western but plan to develop the character with some of the supernatural overtones in the hopes of creating a franchise.”

...Huh...I dig that. Never would have thought of Jane and that make up looks pretty good with the exception of the mouth. Gotta have that mouth. Glad they didn't make the guy Two-Face or anything. That's an easy line to cross.

I'd cast him as either Clint Eastwood or Sam Elliot minus the mustache

If both casting and picture true, then I'm all for it. I love Thomas Jane, and by the look of the concept picture, he seems to fit the role.

Thomas Jane fits the bill. He looks especially badass in the picture. So here's to hope that he'll get cast as Jonah Hex.

Well, well. What a present surprise.

Was he rumored to be cast? I haven't really followed the project.

Jane loves his genre pics.

Its a great piece of concept art.

Nope. This just came out of nowhere. It's like the first time a photo is released before the cast member is even announced*

*to be fair though, it doesn't necessarily mean he's been cast. He could have just posed for a make-up test as a favour to the directors, but in that case it's somewhat odd that they would get a proper actor to do that rather than just, well... anyone.

Quite an interesting development. I'm all for seeing Jonah Hex make the jump to the big screen. DC has a wealth of non-superhero characters that don't need $150 million budgets to bring to life and are just as interesting as their superheroes.

A thought on the earlier digression. "Supernatural western" could mean a great many things. It could be like the Joe Lansdale stories where Hex ends up fighting zombies and the like. It could be a lot more subtle, like High Plains Drifter. Or it could be ambiguous, like Dead Man.

No. Viggo Mortensen seemed to be the fan favorite for the role.

Thanks guys

From the sound of the material and the look of character I would be fine with either.

If its true jane is hex that is cool. Hopefully it turns out to be true. I dont really know about the character so i couldnt really judge who would be right for the character.

Jane can pull off the role, but lets see the material they give him first.

I'd be up for seeing the Lansdale stories brought to the big screen. cuz im a big fan of Lansdale. and yes, I even liked the episode of TNBA entitled "Critters".

THats outlaw archetypes in a totally different setting. Not the same

Well, as someone who only knows OF the character of Jonah Hex, having not actually read any comics with the character, I'd say "A Western, Sin City style", is one hell of a pitch. Color me interested.
