Western Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio Eye Killers of the Flower Moon

Yeah, and I truly do not understand why the budget for this should be this high.

De-aging DiCaprio!

I absolutely respect Martin Scorsese but it’s not reasonable to expect a major studio to spend that much on a movie on a western considering the box office history of westerns recently.
It's not reasonable. But if you can get them to do it, more power to him.

Or some of his own films, really. Hugo and Silence flopped hard.
I think he has no idea how to handle big budgets. First The Irishman, now this.

Based on what though? Also, is it an issue if they are willing to give him the money?

Don't get me wrong. He has earned the credit and reputation to make movies with whatever budget he wishes. That someone could potentially greenlight such a huge project even after a few recent box office failures shows exactly that. And I'm glad he's going to make it.

Doesn't change the fact that 200 million is a preposterous amount of money for western and gangster movies. I couldn't see anything even close to justifying a sum like that in The Irishman. I can only halfway understand the de-ageing effects argument and even that turned out to be underwhelming.

It's good that he's at a point in life where he doesn't have to downgrade his vision but I just don't think he's sensible in spending money for expensive projects.

My question was more of pratical nature: I do get how The Irishman cost so much, I was wondering what he's planning for this in order justify such a budget. Is he planning on de-aging someone again?

You mean like Django Unchained?
I mean like Lone Ranger, The Magnificent 7, The Hateful 8.

And to use your example, Django’s budget was only $100 million and made $400 million. So for a theater release and a $225 million budget, that gross would break even or be a loss if you factor in marketing.

On how this could possibly cost so much. I don't think it would have anything to do with tech. It would be a question of those involved getting big pay checks and the behind the scenes being super over the top. A made that joke about Cowboy & Aliens, but a lot like that. A movie that literally devoured it's budget with catering. The two leads, if they are DeNiro and Leo could easily cost 60m-70m themselves. It's crazy, but I think it's kind of fantastic that Marty has people in a bidding war to see who can pay him the most to do whatever he wants.

It ain't my money, so I don't care the cost. We also don't know if the irishman is a flop or not, Netflix doesn't really release numbers. I think a Leo lead flick going to streaming would be a hard one to pass up on, if we talking about Netflix.

Marty: I want, uh, *checks notes* 250M.
Paramount: Marty, that's too much. Can we do 150M instead?
Marty: Eh...
Netflix: 250M is too much! Can we do it lower? How about 200M?
Marty: :D :D :D

Eh, Scorsese has earned a blank check to be honest. I know fanboys around here are still salty about his accurate Marvel comments, but like I said, it ain't none of our money involved, kinda easy to sit back and just watch. Leo going to Netflix would be a huge PR move for them too, he is the last legit movie star.

His Marvel comments have nothing to do with this conversation. Making movies is as much a business as an art, and no one who wants to make money would sign up for that kind of budget for a character driven western movie.

Eh, I think we should wait till Netflix/Apple pass on it tho, then it would be no one left. I for one think this gets made.

Yeah, it is funny to see Martin Scorsese grabbing the industry by its balls. I'm just a little bummed this will be yet another movie of his sitting out a proper theatrical release.

That does suck. I would have loved to see the Irishman in theaters. But the closest to me was like 100 miles away. Couldn't justify that. This being a western will probably make it even more must see in theaters.

Yup, that's exactly what I mean.

Various data released over time have led many analysts over the months to conclude that the Irishman was not really a win for Netflix for what it cost. I even remember the Madea dude saying his film for Netflix shot in a weekend got more views. Rob Lowe as well, both either talking out of school or their butts. It certainly wasn't a win for Netflix in terms of trying to buy an Oscar, which is part of what they were hoping to get with a lofty budget.

I suspect Netflix will bite again, after all their debt and cash burn is being funded by the high-yield bond market, although everyone needs to be more cautious in this current landscape.

To be fair, Scorsese has never been a box office bonanza. His biggest hit before the DiCaprio-era was Cape Fear.

DiCaprio has basically been his key in recent box office success, so just having DiCaprio's name attached is going to sell this even more than Scorsese's name.

If it ends up on streaming he won't be grabbing the industry by the balls considering how much value he puts on theatrical experience. If it does get that budget from a studio and doesn't at least make back it's break even profit, the headlines would be about studios hanging themselves from the balls.
