Marvel Family fans

I think one of the biggest problems facing updating the Marvel family are the names. My only drawback to the Ordway run in the 90's was that he avoided this issue with Mary, and CM3 doesn't cut it for Jr.

The other problems seem to be updating Marvels actual 'change'---do other people see the lightning or not? What happens when Billy changes inside?

I suggest renaming Mary to Lady Marvel, and Freddy to Captain Thunder, Captain Marvel's original name. I also suggest making it so the magic lightening can be corporeal if Marvel wants--ie, tangible so it strikes people and objects, and/or giving it the option of having it "invisible" so when it strikes, spectators don't see it, but they're "befuddled" so they don't realize the change is happening.


Best thing I can come up with for more plausibility.


With copyright restrictions and outdated Golden Age rules, he's one of the tougher guys to update.


Course I don't know what current canon is other than it's generally unpopular.

Wait a second... so this is a guy who can summon lightning at will and you want it to be invisible lightning?

I think Mary Marvel stands as a very good name as is.

In the 1940s, the explanation went that the change happened so fast no one figured it out, despite Cm standing where Billy had been.

And this of course was completely negated by Billy telling radio listerns of his switch to and from Cm.

A more practical way of depicting it is the method used in the Captain marvel serial. Puff of light and smoke done in a convenient identity change area.

I'd like to lose the 'uses lighting as an attack' option. If the lightning is summoned Cap changes UNLESS he's in a prepared area or other not normally the case situation where the lighting can be bypassed. Ie another Super moves him into or out of the way at the exact moment.

Example: Super Silvana has the Strength and speed to grab CM and put him in front of Mary just as she's about to go from Mary Bromfield to Mary Marvel. Billy's back and Mary remains Mary.

Unless the blue suited Marvel can save the day, the twins are in deep trouble vs Super Silvana. (Well aside from the red self destruct button on the Super Silvana Projector ray... )

Here's a thought: One of the few weak spot in Orday's run was Captain Nazi's return. The Marvels had been updated for the 90s and Captain Nazi was a dumb idea back in the 40s. Worse half a century later.

Update Captan Nazi. He's Billy's age, and American Skinhead. "Captain Nazi" is the sort of name a kid would come up with. Run with that concept.

Invisible to "normal" vision perhaps. As for Mary, having your alter ego have the same name as your superhero identity sounds like a bad idea.

Yeah, I'd like the lightning as a weapon to go away.

The only way the Marvel family works for me is on Earth-S or the new Earth-5. Trying to do them in a modern style is 100% Square Peg Round Hole. DC should hire Erik Larsen and let him do whatever he wanted with them.
