Marvel's: Blade

Overall, reading through some of the comments on CBM and here, I think a more retro take on the character from the silver age is probably an interesting way to go on this as sort of an adventure/thriller kind of movie traversing around the globe with a bit of old school charm infused throughout.

I can't really get too excited for this film as much though. If they try and do something similar to Wesley Snipes Blade movies, I don't think it'd maintain the attitude and edge of the original movies.

Overall, I do wonder how a PG-13 4 quadrant Blade movie will play out? Supernatural or horror genre can be harder to pull off in the MCU.

It would probably be similar to Dr. Strange with some trademark Marvel Studios humour.

Retro take? Say no more.

Let Blade go round in this 70s outfit throughout the movie. Maybe someone (Whistler?) tries to get him to dress like Wesley Snipes, but Blade is reluctant to wear that. Perhaps only at the end he dresses like Snipes, albeit unwillingly, and always wishes he could go back to his 70s costume because it has served him well for so long.

I'm not expecting the same attitude/edge as the other films but I don't think it'll be too watered down or having to be too retro. I have faith they'll make it work and Blade will still be a badass and cool character.

Will be nice to see Blade merchandise when the film comes out and like him being part of video games again. Plus he may get a new comic series and get a fan/reader boost

But why would Blade be stuck in a 70's mindset? Why would he be unwilling to look more modern?

Again, he doesn't have to look like Snipes. But I don't get wanting to make him look like some goofy pirate, either. You wanting him to secretly want to dress like this is kind of weird.

Big green sunglasses or we riot. Hoping they go for more of a Tomb of Dracula aesthetic than the 2000s trilogy.

Agreed. I know there are good reasons why its unlikely, but. . . I really hope they deemphasize the "half vampire" aspect that has dominated the character for 20 years, particularly since that poaches on the niche of another Marvel hero, Hannibal King. Instead, the emphasis should be that Blade is, essentially, Vampire Hunting Batman. He, after suffering a childhood trauma, spent his entire life training to the pinnacle of skill under all the great masters in his "field", and is now the best there is at what he does. He doesn't need superhuman strength or impossible reflexes to fight vampires or other monsters, because he is a master with every relevant weapon, knows every monstrous bane and weakness, and lays plans and traps which leave his prey no hope of escape.

For some inexplicable reason, I'm seeing Ali/Marvel's Blade as a Peter Cushing/Hammer Van Helsing type - less physical than Snipes but older, more refined and more studious. I have no basis for this other than Ali's age when shooting, the loss of Snipes' martial arts prowess and Marvel's probable desire to differenciate their Blade from the previous version.

Ali isn't a martial artist but he can still get some good training in with the fight choreographer.

Snipes's look is awesome and it still works, so I don't see the problem with Ali using the look. He can still look different enough by using his normal hair than the style Snipes used and he wear a leather jacket than a trench coat. Perhaps just the jeans and vest

I doubt they will drastically change the look. I DO think there's a strong chance, especially given Ali's age, that we see the father/daughter story from that comic series a while back. The comic never happened, but I remember hearing Feige was very interested in making it happen.

Anyway, I want to see full on GOT level violent vampire turf wars. Marvel actually has a super cool, international vampire mythos with tons of untapped potential that could be incredible to see.

Above all else, though, I need red dragon armor Dracula.

latest

Top choices would be Lars Mikkelson, Jason Isaacs, or Stephen Dillane

Not to overshadow him but I hope we get to see Hannibal King or Dracula in some form. Maybe even Werewolf By Night down the line.
Blade would never be overshadow but the trash characters you just named, but nice try.

I think he will guest in WandaVision if Chthon is the villain. Blade seeking revenge against Chthon would be an awesome way of showing his connection to Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange and that his mission is more than just "kill vampires".

Mahershala Ali seems like a strange choice to me. It's an incredibly physical role, not something he's known for, and he'll be pushing 50 by time they make the movie, never mind the presumed sequels and team-ups.

Wesley Snipes July 31 1962 age 57

Mahersala Ali Feb.16 1974 age 45

Eitherway, a Peter Cushing/Van Helsing type someone mentioned above is a bit too far and wouldn't be as cool but I do think a toned down version that's not quite as unstoppable from a physical standpoint going up against his vampiric foes (who hopefully this time are less horde like) could be a different approach with less violence I suppose if atmosphere and pulp take over and Marvel Studio's doesn't want to simply do Wesley Snipe's version only lighter.

Anyway... About the retro take, anyone have a pic of Mahersala with longer hair? At least from a visual standpoint concerning costume/look, I can't really envision Mahersala this way but would be interested if someone can photoshop together something surprising.

Yeah, that's what I saw on CBM. I think that would be pretty interesting but I can't really picture that as Mahersala Ali.

I remember reading a Spiderman comic and seeing in the Bullpen Bulletin section an image of Blade similar to this comic cover as another version too:

I think a pulpy globe trotting adventurer could offer something fun. I don't know if that comic's any good but as a template to pull from maybe an aspect here and there can be borrowed from the character across the decades to offer a good PG-13 film too.

He looks like a biker there. And who wears their leather jacket tucked into their pants?

No one. It's as many jackets there's a belt attached at the bottom.

12 years younger than tom cruise.

If he wasn't as great an actor as he is i would have said ,yes go for someone younger. But i think they can work around it and he'll do great.
