Marvel's losing its edge and DC's getting its back

Until DC & WB prove they can make truly successful film franchises that don't revolve around Batman, they have no "edge" to speak of.

This. Which means they never had one to begin with.
Am I the only one here who liked Green Lantern?

Superman was good until they made the third one. And the fourth one. And the fifth one.

I actually did like Green Lantern even though some parts could have been handled better. As a GL fan I was greatly disheartened by the hate campaign and "it's a bomb!" dismissal that went off after it was released. I don't think anyone expected films like Constantine or Jonah Hex to open the floodgates for a DC renaissance, but surely Green Lantern had a better shot at opening those gates than they did, and to see that option possibly abandoned is just really, really sad. I know one of the WB guys said they weren't giving up on the franchise just yet, but it took decades just to get one Green Lantern film made. How long are we gonna have to wait for another one, or the Flash?

I liked Green Lantern but I am aware that it was flawed in some places, the script needed more polishing and the budget was not used wisely, there should have been more scenes on Oa, and the movie needed more screen time for Sinestro.

I still think that GL has been introduced to the general audience and WB only need a WW and a Flash movie (people are already familiar with Bats and Supes) so a JL movie can be made if WB can make a WW and a Flash movie after MOS.

Honestly, i've never been a huge GL fan but I'll watch about any superhero adaptation.

I thought GL was a little too ambitious. Parallax was the wrong villain to kick off the franchise. The GL corp was made to look pretty inept when a novice can just come in and save their collective asses. They should have at least let him get some xp fighting lesser villains before moving up to a primal force like Parallax.

The effects were fine but Renolds was kind of just Renolds. He is a guy that can act but I think the script just kind of let him phone it in. I know it's a superhero movie so how challenging should the script be? But i think DK and IM show you can interpret these characters with quite a bit of depth.

Then there's the depiction of Parallax. Kind of tired of galactic entities being depicted as clouds. It wasn't as bad as Galactus but it wasn't great.

Hal sux. They should have used John Stewart. Many people think of him when they hear GL because of the JLU show. They could have saved money on that stupid CG mask because John's too cool to wear it.

Stewart's one of the absolute blandest characters in comics.

Way to double tem 'em, nubis.

They woulda made more money. Woulda been a "guaranteed mega hit" :)

That's an inside joke for CConn. I do think they would have made more $$ w/John tho. They couldn't have done much worse.

Um, it's nota joke when you actually agree with it, chief.

In the end it wouldn't have mattered who they used. If the same people that wrote the movie with Hal, wrote it with Stewart, you woulda got the same result. Too much crap tossed in for no reason, not enough time in space, and because it's John, they probably woulda put in him blowing up a planet for no reason. :o

No bad characters, just bad writers.

Campbell's direction was like steam cooked **** too. :o

So this is gonna turn into another "we hate Green Lantern" thread?

This may have already been said, but there are no 'DC films' in the same way there are Marvel Studio films. The Marvel films have a certain level of involvement from Marvel creative types (but mainly executive types, it must be said) that leads to a specific company outlook/brand. Although Warner Bros owns DC comics, films based on their characters do not have anything like the same level of oversight and involvement by the actual comics company/creators. Superman Returns, Batman Begins and Green Lantern are three completely different movies with no connection to each other, they are not created by the same people at all.

I wonder if the WB & DC will be having (emergency meetings) this week fast tracking Justice League after The Avengers made $200 Million this weekend in the U.S. alone ?

Um, no.

There's no emergency anything for WB because they can and will be very financially stable without needing to scramble to make a JLA movie.

Will The Avengers success prompt them to take another look at making a JLA movie? Without question. But you people need to get through your heads that there's not some foolish Marvel vs. DC war between the studios where they both feel the need to constantly one-up each other.
