Aceves's father later told investigators that his son has a history of mental illness, had stopped taking his medication years ago and had spent time in a mental health facility on two occasions when he was 16. Family members were worried when they learned he had purchased a gun. (Federal background checks conducted in Texas do not flag mental health admittance for juveniles.)
Of course there's a shooting during a Fourth of July parade...
Firearm evidence was found on the rooftop of a business in Highland Park, police commander Chris O'Neill said. The firearm was a "high-powered rifle" and the attack on parade attendees appeared to be "random" and "intentional," said Christopher Covelli, spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
Authorities described the suspect as a white man between 18-20 years old with a small build, long black hair and wearing a T-shirt. They described the suspect as "armed and dangerous" and advised people to shelter in place.
A total of 31 people were transported to two hospitals, according to NorthShore University Health System spokesperson Jim Anthony. The vast majority had gunshot wounds, while other injuries were caused in the chaos after the shooting, he said.
Yup, we are some wild buckeroos.Nothing more American than a shooting on Independence Day
Yup, we are some wild buckeroos. We need therapy.
It's sadly true. The only ones that seem to linger in people's minds for a while are shootings where kids make up a majority of the victims and even then it hasn't made much of a difference. It’s so frequent in the US that one story gets drowned out by the next newer one.![]()
