I ask this as someone who doesn't live in the US but every time news about mass shootings come my way I wonder, what exactly is the root of the problem? Why is that something that only seems to happen there? I ask this with the upmost respect. I genuinely don't understand the obsession with guns.

IMO, the economic success of the US has been based on hegemony. The "Founding Fathers" wanted nothing more than to get rich and there were political theorists (like Adam Smith) who understood that wealth came from siphoning off labor from workers. So, the dominant ideology was to take over a land that hadn't been exploited by Europe and make it "our" own. EF the people who already lived here.

So, how does one conquer? By force, by guns, by technology........AND monetize it. The ideology of the US is profit above all, including any sense of morality, and the founding fathers, generally, understood this form of economics and bought into it.

So, you see, might makes right. This appendage of "might" lives on today, and will, hopefully, be overtaken by a more humane society. My hope is that we avoid an internal strife and that our political system can change in order to accommodate a peaceful economic transition. The problem is that the very, very wealthy probably won't want to give up their privilege that so many others have given them

Mother of a high school shooter has been found guilty of 4 charges of involuntary manslaughter. Not a huge fan of blaming the parents for all cases of underage mass shooters, but this case was especially egregious.

When you give a child a gun and know they have mental health issues, you are guilty. They had to know their kid was not well adjusted and not mentally fit to posess a gun.
