Mass Violence in America: the All Inclusive Thread

They're now saying the guns aren't the blame, but people who are mentally ill.

The world has and will always be broken. There is no perfect solution to prevent something like this counterbalanced against police atrocities we see. Perhaps a training/certification process for both ends similar to a drivers license only with certain levels of clearances one can work their way up to through certain measurements may help somewhat...

And yet R's will pretty consistently vote down strengthening the social saftey net of which public mental health services is a part of.

What narrative is Fox News running with? Texas is very pro 2nd ammendment, right wing, and supports open and concealed carry. The argument, "more armed civilians would have stopped this" doesnt really work when the mass shooting happened in Texas.

I'm glad you asked!

Embarrassments to humanity. The lot of them. I can’t even begin to imagine the horror that occurred in El Paso. When will there be some common sense gun laws to help prevent this sort of crap

That episode of South Park about the school shooting is really starting to become my reaction to this. I don't have any anger left...

I believe it was a recurring bit the whole last season, which is appropriate.

And now I just saw a shooting in Ohio. So 2 shooting just today/yesterday and wasn't there also one on like Monday some were?

Gilroy Garlic Festival in California.

Oh ok I didn't hear much about that one but I thought I heard about it just didn't really now were. Its really messed up I dont even watch the news much has I have problems with depression and all the news is depressing stuff like this and yet even with out really paying attention to the news I still end up hearing about so many shootings. If I watched the news it would just be a lot worse when it comes to hearing about stuff. The ohio one I just saw about on internet home page. Sure is scary how bad things are. I live in a smaller town so of course the chances of something happing is lower then a big city but its getting the point where I am expecting some were around hear to get shoot up at some point in time. Just cant go any were and be safe any more.

It's actuallly the opposite. Crime is generally lower than it's been anytime since the early 1060's in the U.S. And as tragic as these events are, and as horrible as they are for the victims and their families... Your personal chances of getting killed in that type of manner are low. If you or most people are going to get shot it won't be by a random stranger you don't know or even some gangbanger drive by or any other such lurid and sensational manner... You're more likely to be shot by someone you know, possibly even a family member.

These events happen far too often but to think that everywhere you go you are absolutely under the threat of possibly mass shooters is to be swayed by media coverage and not realize that you actually live in a time where crime is actually lower than it's been in a long time. That is not an arguement to be complacent about policy towards the nexus of availability of guns and the mental health crisis in this country, nor to be blinded to how extremist POVs, left, right or religious contribute to the mass shootings that take place. At the same time... We have to understand that the solution isn't going to come by inaccuratly assessing the situation and retreating inside to rooms with the door locked at all times.

I am not sure about like over all crime just seems like shootings sure are on the rise and yeah you cant just stay inside rooms with a lock door all the time has then you are living in fear and not really living.

It seems that way because the media and news are hyper focused on them. The mass shootings havent increased. News coverage of them has increased because it increases their ratings. Mass shootings are a sensational crime and they are highly partisan and political in America.

The modern 24/7 news cycle has really skewed people's perspective and understanding of crime statistics.

Only in America where it's too easy to get military weapons.

I'm just gonna say it... Warren.

Can I get a source on that? Because I've definitely read otherwise.

Rate of mass shootings has tripled since 2011, new research from Harvard shows

https://everytownresearch.org/reports/mass-shootings-analysis/

TL;DR, mass shootings have increased in frequency and have also become deadlier.
