Which origin would you prefer for Splinter? The original comics that has him as a rat, or him being Yoshi and mutating to a rat. I prefer the latter one since I think it is more dramatic to have a human mutating into a rat, losing his former appearance forever. And what kind of rat is intelligent enough to watch a person performing ninja moves and then doing them itself? That's a bummer to me.

Reincarnation from the idw comic, It makes the most sense to me.

And why would a well respected master of ninjutsu, reincarnate to a filthy little rat :o
I just prefer the more sci fi angle of the mutation. Reincarnation is too supernatural for me.

I don't know the laws of reincarnation but I like it because the turtles are his actual sons and he was able to learn ninjutsu as a human and then be a rat that mutated in his next life. It also could explain why shredder is a white guy called eric sachs and splinter and the turtles would have a more personal connection to shredder.

Yoshi being turned into a rat would probably top for me.
Wouldn't mind the reincarnation thing though.

Never cared for the ninjutsu learning rat origin.

given that he's played by Danny Woodburn (assuming the character well be some what proportionally accurate) I'd guess he does start out as a rat

just saying, it makes since for a rat to grow when mutating into a humanoid creature, rather then a man shrinking

as for a rat knowing ninjutsu... I agree that the rat in a cage doing kung fu...

... was kinda silly

but, maybe it could be more like as a result of his mutation that he grew more intelligent and was able to access his memories from while he was the pet of Hamato Yoshi, and then as a humanoid creature was able to mimic the moves...

The rat in a cage doing kung fu in the first movie worked BECAUSE it was silly. It was supposed to be. The original comics were intended to be a parody in a sense.

If they're going for something a little more weighty, having just started reading the IDW title, I'm all for reincarnation for Splinter and the turtles. I think that's a pretty cool, generational concept with enough of a nod to their original origins, with some interesting possibilities.

I like that scenario.

I think this is bang on what the film will be

That's actually a really good point I hadn't considered. We won't be seeing a human Splinter in this movie, or else Woodburn wouldn't have been cast, or at the very least there would have been a "human Splinter/Yoshi" casting.

People don't choose what they come back as.

The only way they can have a mutant rat that knows Martial Arts, Would be if they went the reincarnation route of the IDW comics..

This idea has been floated by some as a bit of a joke speculation, but I actually think it would make a lot of sense and would offer an interesting new take on the character: Splinter as April's father, mutated into a rat creature.

I have no interest in seeing that myself. I guess it could be a way to create a brother-sister bond between the turtles and April. I don't like everyone being so closely connected with each other. though.

I hated the whole Fred Wolf "mutate into whatever animal you touched last" thing. Even as a kid, Splinter's cartoon origin never made much sense to me. The Mirage/1990 movie origin is much better. It's no sillier than the entire premise of TMNT, so you might as well stick with the original origin.

And I'm pretty sure the last thing it showed Hamato Yoshi touching was a turtle...not a rat. So he should have been a turtle

If Spllinter was changed into a turtle then they would probably have given him a beard to make him look old and wise. The Papa Smurf deal.

I think at this point I'll accept anything. Just don't make him April's dad.

Yeah that would kill the film for me, also if the rumors are true that they are going with a Street Sharks type of origin for the actual turtles I may have to think about if I really want to see this in the theaters.

He stepped into the ooze to touch the turtles. Meaning he touched the ooze before he touched the turtles.

Also, I think people are really getting their hopes set on the reincarnation story, when we have absolutely no reason to believe they will go that route. This movie has been pretty clear on the matter that it is very determined to be its own thing and not follow and previous versions of the turtles too closely.

I think at this point I'll accept anything. Just don't make him April's dad.

Let's be honest here. This movie could have Splinter start out as April's father who is also Casey Jones, mutated into a rat by a mad scientist Shredder, and people would still be on here defending it.
