Fantasy Masters of the Universe - Part 3

I like Sam Heughan for Captain Britain but he could be a great He Man as well.

My God. This is going to be the the darkest and most serious He-Man movie ever.

I can just hear Goyer. "I always thought him being in his underwear was too goofy, so we gave him pants."

Heughan could pass for a guy in his 20s and he's built like a tank.

He could definitely pass for 30. People need to focus on what an actor looks like and not the actual #.

Excatly. His character on Outlander is much younger than he actually is and it doesn't matter.

MOTU is schlock sci-fantasy meant to be an after-school cartoon (or was). Can't believe they see franchise potential in that.

That's what people have thought about comic books before. When I was a kid, adults (teacher or parents) would just think that comic books were silly and only for after school viewing with not even any serious film potential. I'm sure even studios felt this way until around the time of X-Men in 2000.

You know that's what people used to say about the prospects of comic book films, right?

Anyway, Goyer's involvement doesn't excite me. I really don't think dark and gritty is the route to go here.

No, really?

Anyway, wasn't MOTU originally a toy line? So was Micronauts. Loved the comic. Still waiting for the movie.

This will turn out as well as Alex Kurtzman's The Mummy, I'm sure.
He's about on that level at this point. If you were hot stuff 10 years ago, Hollywood still considers you A-list no matter what duds you've had in the meantime (as long as you're a white guy).

Wish they'd get somebody wild like Lexi Alexander or Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Hell, even Taika Watiti would make a certain kinda sense for this one.

Never heard of him until reading this - just googled him and, my God, he's just like Alan Davis' Brian Braddock.

Masters of the Universe Reboot to Begin Filming in Spring
Renaldo Matadeen said:
Sony’s Masters of the Universe reboot is set to commence shooting this April to meet a scheduled release date of December 2019. While a location is yet to be confirmed, rumor has it that Europe could be a potential destination after Sony recently targeted Budapest, Hungary for The Crow Reborn.

The studio recently tapped up David Goyer as director and co-writer for the project, which it has been trying to get off the ground since 2009. Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) circled the movie in 2012, with McG then coming aboard only to step aside earlier this year.

Goyer — who has written on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel and directed the likes of Blade: Trinity and The Unborn — will be joined by screenwriter Lindsey Beer. Beer’s credits include Godzilla vs Kong, Barbie and she is also attached to the Star Trek writer’s room for Quentin Tarantino’s project.

Masters of the Universe is based on the popular Mattel action figure line, with Adam of Eternia front and center as He-Man. The property spawned a couple of animated series and a 1987 live-action film, which starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. He traveled from his home of Eternia to Earth in order to stop his nemesis Skeletor from using the Cosmic Key for evil means. The original cartoon ran from 1983 to 1985, with a follow-up in 1990 and a reboot in 2002.

Casting details have yet to be revealed for Masters of the Universe, which is slated to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18, 2019.

Wow. David Goyer is probably one of the better directing talents that you can get for a project like this (i.e., it's not as if Peter Jackson was going to do this).

You mean in the sense that literally every movie he's ever directed has bombed?

At this point, whatever. Give him a decent budget and I'll wager he knows enough about the univese to at least make it semi faithful.

Yeah, 'cause nobody out there likes & embraces cheesiness, every single person out there wants everything to be The Dark Knight or Dredd.

C'mon. Ragnarok was just huge. The 80s are seemingly "in" in a big way right about now. It's been decades since the last MOTU in live-action.

But nah, nothin' to see here right? What are they even thinking?!

As for Goyer, yeah, not excited about him directing. He's in part responsible for the Dark City script though, he almost gets a pass on everything else for that, heh.

I don't have a lot of faith in Goyer directing. But nothing has happened with Masters of the Universe outside some comics and the Classics line for years. So it's something at least. Even if it's bad it might be a semi-interesting train wreck.

The way I see it is this, David Goyer > the director of Jem and the Holograms and the director of the Charlie's Angels movies.
