By Anthony Breznican, USA TODAY

Mel Gibson was arrested in Malibu for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol Friday morning after Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies pulled over his vehicle for speeding.
He was driving his 2006 Lexus sedan at about 80 mph in a 45 mph zone on the Pacific Coast Highway, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. The Passion of the Christ filmmaker and Braveheart Oscar winner was booked at the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station around 3 a.m. and released on $5,000 bail nearly seven hours later.

"We smelled alcohol on his breath, but this investigation is ongoing," said Whitmore. An incident report said deputies performed a field sobriety test that the Lethal Weapon star failed. Whitmore did not specify Gibson's blood-alcohol content, and said details were being presented to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office for review.

Gibson, 50, did not resist or get combative. "He was arrested without incident," Whitmore said.

The Lost Hills station is also where fellow actor Nick Nolte was taken into custody for driving under the influence in 2002, which produced a famous mug shot of Nolte looking angry and disheveled. Whitmore said the Gibson booking photo would not be immediately released.

Gibson has a history of problems with alcohol but has claimed in recent years to have gotten it under control. He was previously arrested for drunk driving in 1984 in Toronto.

In a 2004 interview with ABC to discuss his controversial Passion, Gibson — who is a traditionalist Roman Catholic — credited his faith with helping him overcome addiction in the early 1990s, when he quietly underwent unspecified rehab. "Everyone's got something," he said in the interview. "I would get addicted to anything, anything at all. OK? Doesn't matter what it is — drugs, booze, anything. ... I'm just one of these guys who is like that. That's my flaw."

He is directing the action film Apocalypto, about ancient Mayan civilization and a tribesman trying to escape after being marked for human sacrifice. The film is set for release Dec. 8.

Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, did not immediately have a comment.

Yes your report is a day older than the two reports I quoted and the sanitised version they refer to.

Mel Gibson apologizes for 'despicable' remarks
Updated Sun. Jul. 30 2006 11:33 AM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

Award-winning actor Mel Gibson allegedly uttered a barrage of anti-Semitic remarks to sheriff's deputies when he was arrested for investigation of drunk driving, according to a website report.

The entertainment site TMZ.com posted what it said were four pages from the original arrest report, which quotes Gibson as going on an expletive-laden tirade after he was stopped early Friday on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, CA.

In a lengthy statement Saturday, Gibson apologized for saying "despicable" things to the officers, but did not refer to any specific words he used.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable," the actor-director said.

"The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person."

According to the website report, Gibson said, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asked the officer, James Mee, "Are you a Jew?"

He also allegedly threatened the arresting deputy and at one point tried to escape.

Controversy surrounded Gibson during the making of his 2004 movie, "The Passion of the Christ," which many religious groups claimed was anti-Semitic because they felt it poorly portrayed Jews.

The attention, however, raised the film's profile. The film earned hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

Gibson's arrest has spurned another accusation -- that the L.A. County Sheriff's Department gave him preferential treatment.

Reports also say the police force tried to cover up Gibson's alleged behaviour. TMZ said the arresting officer was told his first report was too inflammatory and that he should rewrite it.

Sheriff Lee Baca defended his department's handling of the case.

"There is no cover-up," Baca told The Los Angeles Times. "Our job is not to (focus) on what he said. It's to establish his blood-alcohol level when he was driving and proceed with the case. Trying someone on rumor and innuendo is no way to run an investigation, at least one with integrity."

The Los Angeles Times reported on its website late Saturday that the sheriff's department's civilian oversight office will investigate the actions of the officers.

Gibson has helped support county sheriff's department causes in the past, and he appeared in a promotional video in 2003 urging residents to support the police agency.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John Hocking said he could not confirm the TMZ report. He added detectives would begin investigating Monday.

Gibson publicist Alan Nierob would not comment on the bizarre incident beyond the written statement, which offered an explanation.

"I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse," Gibson said.

Gibson, 50, was stopped at 2:30 a.m. near his Malibu home for speeding. He was allegedly clocked travelling 140 km/h in a 70 km/h zone.

A breath test indicated his blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent. The legal limit in California is 0.08 percent.

Gibson was released about seven hours later after posting $5,000 bail.

Burn the actor who was drunk!

Praise the president who IS drunk!

This is ridiculous. He only got arrested for drunk driving. There's too much hype over this.

Me too. But if it is true, that is some funny stuff.

I think his raving anti-semetic rant is getting alot more attention than the DUI.

I wonder what he was drinking
Red wine makes me let lose

well, from my perspective, he's right about the all the wars thing if he's talking about the recent lebnon thing.

Then just dump him like garbage and move on to more important stars. As an action hero he was nowhere as cool as Eastwood or the stars of the Magnificent Seven. As a director he still doesn't come close to the great ones. I didn't even bother with "The Passion of Christ" because I'm told that story every Easter Sunday. It's damn morbid too.

Two words: Yul Brenner.

I'm still amazed at how much Gibson guy could actually resemble Saddam Hussein if a biopic was ever assembled. Looking over the "contemporary, non-imaginative" age of hollywood that we currently live in, one's probably in development right now.

Gibson is just another disgruntled star who's finding new ways to piss people off. He's worth a fortune and he's still complaining. You'd think he would just retreat to his own compound and vanish into obscurity, unless he had an actual film to promote, but nope, he's on a rampage: A pointless one as well.

Look, rascism is wrong, but if you're going to pick a race, why pick the one with the most influential clout in hollywood? Not smart at all.

That was distasteful propaganda. Many people have beards like Mel Gibson and Saddam Husseim. You'll even find Jews who have beards like that. Whoever made that comparison was being too harsh.

I wasn't comparing him on the viewpoint similarities, if any. I was actually solely refering to the physical aspect. :o

Guess we won't be seeing Passion 2. I want my $6.50 back from the first one.

But you compared his face to an infamous tyrant. One who is an enemy of Israel. :o

eh, Like father like son is what I say.

It's the facial structure, too. The beard just enhances the look.

I agree. Normally Gibson is known for being smarter than that. And if it really is true...well it makes me sad :( cause watching the Lethal Weapon movies just won't be the same .

True Yul Brenner and Charles Bronson are on another level totally.

Reading the story at TMZ, it implied that the reason the "official" report was sanitized was because it would "incite anti-Jewish hatred" which would be very inflammatory considering the current Israel-Lebanon crisis. It went further to imply that the officers figured, "It's just a DUI, do his anti-semitic comments really matter?"

To be fair, when the charge is DUI, the comments made by the perpetrator in the police car aren't the most important issue.

However, now I find Mel Gibson to be a sad, sad, and now unattractive individual. He's been a drunk FOR YEARS - he cheated on his wife like crazy (but still managed to father 7 kids), but I thought he'd "found Jesus" with his whole "Passion" thing.

Maybe he should get electrocuted by a hair drier in the bathtub, so that he can wake up to hear "What Jews Want", and find out that they're actually not power-hungry, moneygrubbing, Holocaust-fabricating, Christkillers after all.

I know I'd watch that movie.
