Michael Bay Producing "Dora The Explorer" Movie

'Dora and the Lost City of Gold': Film Review

What keeps things alive, up to a point, is the imperturbable attitude of the titular heroine, who is invested with try-and-stop-me spirit by Moner, who's actually 18 and looks it despite preventive measures. The same goes for Wahlberg, who's 19. There's a palpable gap you can't help but notice between the essentially innocent, borderline-pubescent nature of the leading characters and the film itself, and the more confident and mature vibes emanating from the leading actors. The director seems to be trying to keep the hormones at bay, but there are some things you just can't disguise, perhaps human nature first and foremost. Dora seems committed to projecting a pre-sexualized version of youth, while throbbing unacknowledged beneath the surface is something a bit more real, its presence rigorously ignored. To be believed, this story should have been set in 1955.

Film Review: ‘Dora and the Lost City of Gold’

Whereas most of the cast (and especially Derbez) play broad, borderline-slapstick versions of their characters, Moner has the wide eyes and ever-chipper attitude we associate with Dora, but adds a level of charisma the animated character couldn’t convey. Previously featured in “Instant Family” and “Transformers: The Last Knight,” the young actress shows obvious star potential, to the extent one hopes this film will be enough of a hit that we can watch her grow up to be a more naturally proportioned — but no less exciting — role model than Lara Croft.

That Hollywood Reporter review has to be the most inappropriately-written movie review I've ever seen for a freaking kids movie. JESUS CHRIST, what normal person, let alone a professional film critic. goes to see a movie like this and comes out wondering "Boy those kids in that movie sure are hormonal". YEUUUUUUGH.

I take it you haven't seen the Dora is hot memes.

Have you not seen the thread that review's link was posted on Twitter? People are upset at how squickily the review is written!

This is the THR critic who wrote the review:

Almost too on the nose.

So, I went to see this movie today. Mostly because I had the day off, had nothing better to do and felt like getting out of the house. While the movie wasn't my cup of tea, I found it sorta enjoyable in a Goonies sort of way. Normally I hate it when there's background noise, talking, clapping, etc. when I'm trying to watch a movie, but, in this case, I found it really enjoyable. The theater (Cinemark XD) was pretty full considering it was a Friday afternoon and it was mostly Mexican and African American families. I really got a kick out of hearing these 9 or so year old girls squealing with delight during the movie. It was good fun for them and it made me happy that they were really enjoying themselves.

I don't care what the critics or anyone else thinks about the movie. Those young girls had a hero they could cheer for and I hope they are inspired to do more in their lives.

Had I known Michael Bay had anything to do with it, I probably would have passed, but, I guess, sometimes ignorance is bliss. LOL and may God erase "Crapformers:Age of SuckStinkShun" from my memory forever.

Yeah ,this and scary stories are getting decent reviews.

Double Toasted has reviewed this quite favourably, and most other sites have too. It has apparently an 81% rating on RT, which is quite surprising for this film.

The main issues that Double Toasted had were Michael Pena not knowing when to shut up (or the editors not cutting him), and there being no proper explanation for Swiper the Fox (plus a possibly lack of continuity with an earlier part of the film). But otherwise they think Isabella Mona carries the film well and some things that it plays off the children's show is done well.

They say that if they were going to adapt Dora for the big screen and as a more adult adventure, this would be how they would do it (minus the issues they have with it).

As long as those kids enjoyed the movie, they could put a Starbucks coffee cup in a 3000 year old crypt for all I care....I probably had a big grin on my face the whole movie. I know I had one when those kids were cheering and laughing.

Korey Coleman of DT said that there was an old couple behind him and they were enjoying it too, and that's partly what pushed it over the edge for him, because he was glad that they were happy too.

Saw it with my wife and kids, and the kids loved it but we enjoyed ourselves too. It wasn’t fantastic in my opinion but it was really entertaining.

Does it have the iconic Dora theme song?

I'm on the fence with this one. Like this wasn't really in my list of movies to watch... but its rt rating? I kinda want to see it today.

Two questions:

Does the backpack talk?

And do they give a real world explanation of Swipey?

It's in there are at the beginning for like 30 seconds.

Is it this one?

This doesn't sound as good as the original. It's missing the cool piano montunos and other bits of jazzy piano chords and that glissando. Also the brass is absent and the bass guitar. It sounds a bit instrumental-lite.

yes.

Hopefully seeing this tomorrow night, but my local theater has been out of power since Thursday. Still hasn't been fixed yet

Definitely prefer this version

And you can hear in the instrumental version in the end credits that it's a really good Latin jazz piece:
