I know people love Driver round these parts, but I find him such a bland choice, especially nowhere near DeNiro caliber at that time.

He is to me, cast in this, is how others here felt about Chris Pratt cast in Super Mario lol

Things seem be revving up when it comes to Mann’s actual next project. The Guardian is reporting that Mann’s “Heat” sequel is definitely happening. In fact, it’s going to be his next film.

The Film Stage is echoing the UK paper with their own report, via “strong sources,” that Warner Bros. is supposedly ready to allocate a big budget to the hotly anticipated sequel and that almost every hot young star in the biz has been trying to get cast in Mann’s film — they include Channing Tatum and Jeremy Allen White, who have apparently made their interest actively known.

Take that last bit with some salt.

And so, it won’t be [Robert De Niro] and Al [Pacino] playing McCauley and Hanna,” explained Mann. “And it actually starts eight years earlier than the movie. It starts in 1988, and then it’s gonna jump to 2000. But I don’t really know who to cast until I’ve actually written the screenplay, but I’m in the middle of writing the screenplay right now. And Warner Bros. have been very patient.”

Then again, the novel was a bestseller in 2022, so I can still see WB being interested.

Because it shows people don't care about Mann's work anymore. I don't see any indication that Heat 2 will do better especially without Deniro and Pacino

Mann isn't really a household name director among casual audiences like Scorsese. Frankly I'm not sure if he ever really has been since he's only made 12 movies in 42 years. The most recent successful movie he had was Public Enemies and I can pretty much guarantee the major reason for that was because it starred Johnny Depp when he was still the biggest star in the world and a fresh off TDK Christian Bale, not because Mann directed it.

I don't know how audiences will respond to a Heat 2 but at the very least I think there's more general interest in it than a Ferrari biopic.

I agree. It should have been an October-November release or early December at the latest. Definitely not something that you save for Christmas Day.

I know nothing about the book or what the story is, so I'm hoping it's good and worthwhile of a movie. I don't really need Pacino/Deniro to sell me on this. I just want another great, epic crime film with a stacked cast.

Please go back to film! As unique as Mann's digital work is, I much prefer his cinematography on celluloid.

Not much new here from what Luigi posted, but I thought this was a great interview where Mann talked about film vs digital, among other things. The original choice of director was something I did not know.

In addition to teasing details about “Heat 2,” which he said would begin right where “Heat” left off, with the Chris Sheherlis character played by Val Kilmer in the original trying to get out of Los Angeles, Mann shared many fascinating tidbits about the evolution of “Heat” — including the fact that he almost didn’t direct what came to be his most iconic film. “In the writing, I never got to a point where there was a gratifying ending,” Mann said. “So I asked my friend Walter Hill to direct it. He said, ‘You’re crazy,’ and I took a look at it again, and that’s when I devised the existing ending and reverse-engineered the movie from that and rewrote it.”

This past January, Mann did confirm his plans to shoot “Heat 2” in 2024. A few days later, he mentioned that he wanted to shoot it on film — something he hasn’t done since the aughts.
