Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

JJ Abrams hasn't ruled out anyone from the old TV show to be in MI4, this includes Nimoy:

How cool would that be? I just got a call that Peter Graves is in great shape, which would be a very bizarre bend in the space-time continuum, for obvious reasons. I almost feel like you could make him serious again and bring him back. Whether it's Nimoy, who I have an incredible affinity for, or Graves or anyone, we'll see. I actually tried to get Martin Landau in "Mission 3," in a very small little moment just for fun, and was told that he had no interest in doing it. But then, when I met him, after the movie came out, it was the greatest thing. We were at this restaurant in New York for one of the TV Upfront parties, and someone introduced me to Landau. They took me over and Martin Landau came over to me, extended his hand, and [pretended to lift a false face off]. That was the greatest thing I'd ever seen!

Landau is awesome.
I could elaborate, but only 3 words : "North by Northwest."

Abrams Won't Direct 'M:I4' But Promises It Will Be Cool
By Joey Ernand on October 29, 2009

In an interview with MTV News, "Star Trek" rebooter J.J. Abrams said that he would not return to direct the fourth "Mission" Impossible" movie.

"I'm producing with Tom," he said recently. "My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie."

Abrams didn't really address rumors claiming that Tom Cruise would not star in this new chapter, but here are a few more things he did say:

"I don't want to give anything away yet, but I will say that it's a story that will feel consistent with the world that has been created," he explained. "It's not a reboot kind of thing. Neither Cruise nor Abrams wanted to work on something that didn't feel like a worthy successor to the first three "Mission" films, but, as he said, the "story was just so damn cool, and we got so excited about it. My hope is that when the script comes in — the dream would be that we could shoot this soon"

Hey as long as he's a producer I still very much look forward to it. If he gets one of his co-workers on his shows to direct (Like Felicity writer Matt Reeves directing Cloverfield), that would be great too. Like a Jack Bender directed Mission Impossible film would rock.

The only thing i can conclude from this is that Paramount is fast tracking the Star Trek sequel.

I think the script for M:i:IV is already done, the writers have been working on it before Paramount greenlit it for a May 2011 release.

I pray that Abrams' involvement means that we'll get more returning faces from M:i:III, such as Maggie Q and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. It's a bit tiresome just to see Cruise being the only returning guy in this franchise.

I agree with this and one of the reasons why M:I:III is my favorite is because it had the best team IMO.

MI3 wasn't that good, I hope this is better movie.

i kinda wish someone else took over the torch of MI3. when Tom cruise was let go of paramount, there was talk that brad pitt would take over. it kinda makes sense, ethan hunt's story ended, he got marriend, the whole thing, and now the MI series would follow someone else.

that way the franchise would continue, and after brad pitt, someone else, maybe will smith, dwayne johnson (when he takes time off from disney flicks), sam worthington, whoever is the it guy of the time, and not neccessarily always following about ethan hunt.

i like the idea of a different director for EACH movie (1-thriller/suspense, 2-action, 3-emotional) we would really get a anthropology of MI world with different takes, and a different actor for every 2 or 3.

i think MI3 is slightly overrated. the first one was hands down the best, followed by 3 and then 2.

I think Cruise kinda clings onto this franchise because it's the only series that he was attached to. It's his Indiana Jones, his James Bond.

But the funny thing is that, besides people liking the TV show, nobody really cares for the movie series. Besides maybe Mission Impossible 3.

MI:3 didn't do very well and was probably the least successful out of all 3. MI:2 despite a lot of fanboys hating it was one of the biggest hits of 2000.

Plus there was that whole dustup with Sumner Redstone because they felt Cruise was committing career suicide and caused it to hurt MI:3. In 2005, Paramount was very hesitant to greenlight MI:3 but they ended up doing it somewhat reluctantly.

wow, i completely disagree with this. if anything, many probably dont' even know there was a TV show, if not, maybe in the heard of it in the past and remembers the song.

and MI3 didn't very poorly, so hardly think anyone likes that. the first one revitalized the franchise, and the second one was hit because it was the seuquel to the hit movie, and it was pure summer blockbuster action.

maybe I don't understand your rebuttal, what do you disagree on exactly?

maybe i word it wrong, but the Mission Impossilbe FILM series are kinda irrelevant. Entertaining films, yes, but they're not James Bond, they're not even Jason Bourne. They're just there. They come and they go.

With Mission Impossible 4 coming up, it's the only franchise that Cruise has, and that's why he's pumping it. I'm not saying you shouldn't like it.

It's like wanting a Mr. and Mrs. Smith saga with a reboot, a prequel, sequel whatever. They'll make money but who really cares?

I'd say you're both wrong, critically Mi-3 was mostly well received and only did below expected box office b/c Cruise was in the eye of the storm.

The TV show was mostly a dull affair made for my Dad's generation, the movie franchise popularity is represented in the amount of money it has made so far.

we disagreed on what i bolded, your statement about people remembering the TV show and that the movies are just movie. i don't agree on it being irrelevent.

i do agree that this franchise is his baby, and can see why he wouldn't want to let go. that part i'm with you.

As for the TV show:

Many people don't remember Peter Graves from that TV show. Instead many people remember him from Airplane. People also remember Martin Landau for his film work (which he still does at his age) and not for his TV stuff unless you remember his TV stuff.

well i'm not really wrong since i didn't say anything necessarily about the film content itself, but about the success of it.

i thought it was the great, but after the first one which is my absolute favorite. i loved the 2nd one as well, think it is unfairly treated.

I've never even seen the TV show, but alot of people know about the films. I'm glad there is going to be a fourth one! I loved the first three, especially the third. Can't wait.

personally, i loved 1 and 3, 2 has its moments. I think 3 is very underrated and was actually a really good summer movie.

I wasn't too enthused when I heard that Cruise would be back. I really think his involvement in the franchise took away the team concept, which made MI stand out in the first place from Bond and other spy series. Also didn't care for him not being Jim Phelps, and what he did to Phelps in the first film. Not cool.

That being said, I enjoyed the heck out of MI3 and I am looking forward to JJ's continued involvement. It reminded me of a really good Alias episode, and despite the box office, the third installment was the best film in the franchise, followed by the first film, and far down the list the atrocious second one.

I also hope that since Cruise is coming back that they bring back the team from the last one. You can never have enough Maggie Q. Though I hope MI4 is a final chapter/passing the torch kind of thing for Cruise's run.

I would actually call the first underrated.
