Mon-El being groomed to replace Superman / Seigel law suit

ok might sound crazy but look at it this way, after years of being a background Character, well since the 60's Legion days anyway, Lar Gand reappears in the 20th century , he is equal to Superman in abilities , taken the name Jonathan Kent , asked by Superman to guard Metropolis , similar size and build to Superman , just heard Mon-El will be joining the JLA wearing a modified S symbol, and the main reason why I think Mon-El may be replacing Superman is the Law suit. We all know what happens in 2013 , no more Superman rights for DC, so they will some how kill off Superman and Lar Gand will take up the mantle of DC's big gun, just a theory, what do you think.

No where. He's going no where. This is ridiculous.

i'm talking about how in 2013 all rights pertaining to Superman revert back the Seigels and Shuster heirs. This article goes on to say that anyone who uses Superman will need permission from Seigels\Shuster heirs and have to pay royalty fees including DC.

just to show you guys what im talking about here is one of many articles out there on the topic

Does anyone in the comic world know why the year 2013 is so important? Anyone? Yes, you in the back, the one in the shirt, yes you. Well for most of you that don’t know, which I just found out a little while ago that one of the most profitable comic book characters may actually die for good (at least at D.C./W.B). 2013 is the license end date for D.C./W.B. on Superman and if they don’t sign a new contract with both the Siegels and the Shusters, the families of the creative minds behind the Man of Tomorrow, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, they may lose rights to the Superman property and may not be able to exploit any new Superman works. What does that mean? Well that means comic folk like us, who have been following Superman since the day we were born, might see his face glimmer on the cover of Marvel. Sure this will screw up the entire D.C. Universe, but who needs Superman when you have the Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter or even better yet Plastic Man. If D.C. is smart they’ll pay whatever the Shusters and Siegels demand for the rights to the Superman property, or everything they had built their company upon will crumble down into ruins.

This knowledge was all released during the legal battle between D.C/W.B. versus the Siegels and the Shusters over “Sweetheart” deals made between Warner Bros. and D.C. comics. You can read all the boring mumble jumble here from V

Ok, so DC will pay a royalty fee or buy the rights back. What's the big deal?

That article is pretty much way off from most of the stuff I've read on the subject. It's not a simple case of the rights reverting back in 2013. 2013 is just when the case will be eligible to open to the courts from my understands, which is another beast all together. Not to mention all the various copyright laws that's related to this.

The big elephant in the room though is the fact that this DC Comics, owned by Warner Bros., part of Time Warner. We've talking about one of the most rich companies on this planet. They are going to do everything within their powers, and possible from their wallets, to keep Superman for merchandising and licensing alone. And their power is vast, their wallets deep.

just getting back on this hypothetical topic, what IF DC decided to permanently kill of Superman , who could take up the never ending battle. Mon-El for sure , Conner , any other ideas. i get the feeling DC is testing the waters with Mon-El , seeing how the fans react. I always liked him and felt he was an under used character. And now with his addition to the JL roister with a modified S symbol, and having him guard Metropolis in Superman's absence , taking the name Jonathan kent , arent they kind of giving him an alternate captain role , kind of like an understudy/back up driver. Just a theory I know, so no need for name calling, I'm just throwing it out there.

I feel this is gonna work itself out. Royalties are a lot cheaper to pay than letting a property get tied up in court. When properties are in litigation NO ONE makes money.
Time Warner would be smart to pay the Siegel and Shuster families and estates royalties and the Seigel and Shuster familes would be smart enough to accept them. These lawsuits can go on for YEARS sometimes even decades.

Copyright law is a friggin' nightmare; it's the lawsuit if you can avoid, it you can with a settlement. Especially on a property Like Superman, Every day DC's Top property is out of action everyone on the business end suffers. It'd be an embarrassment of epic proportions if Time Warner allowed Superman to fall into this legal abyss.

I dont know whats worse...the newbie topic starter or the fact that you guys dont know whats been going on with the siegels and shusters legal battle

Then, by all means, enlighten the conversation

I'm really sorry Mr. "The batman" I'll ask your permission next time I start a topic , I didn't know that you own the boards and know everything.

But I see know one wants to respond to the topic, top posters would rather be provocateurs so they can feel strong and bash others. These boards are all the same , full of jerks.

If DC Comics were to lose Superman you would have Conner replace him not Mon-El. Because is not involved with law suit in no shape or form besides the Superboy name which could be changed. Also the other reason why it would be Conner who replaces Superman is because Conner is the person most fans would widely support. Conner replacing Superman is like Dick replacing Bruce. It's only natural to be honest had he not been dead at the time because LO3W took so long to get out I feel he could have replaced him in Superman instead of Mon-El. I mean I like Mon-El and all but he belongs in the 31st century with the Legion not where he is now.

Then is there another reason Mon-El has a new inverted Superman costume with a metallic S , and has joined the JL , I think they are testing the waters with this just in case.

Once again Mon-El only works as a replacement if it was temporary if they were to do a permanent replacement then it would go to Conner not Mon-El. Fans accepted Mon-El because it is temporary but if you were to do this on a more permanent basis then the main Superman fans who buy the book (which is the fans that matter) would want Conner to replace Superman. It is similar to Batman as I said before if Batman was to be gone for a long period of time they either want Dick to replace him or move on to Batman Beyond and bring in Terry. Like Wonder Woman her fans would not settle for anyone then Donna to replace her. Conner is that for Superman fans and DC knows it. As I said before though the problem with Conner was he was dead at the time.

I have been buying Superman comic books for 25 years , I think Mon-El has been an untapped character , for years they didn't know what to do with him, he is Superman's equal and since the glory days of the legion he has been largely in the background except for Valor which I never really liked. i would like to see him take a more prominent role in the DCU , no I don't want him to replace Superman, I hope things stay as they are, but I would like to see Mon-El as number 2 heavy hitter in the DCU, this character deserves more air time, what do you think

jeff, as crazy as his rambling is, has already explained it somewhat, the problem is, he's jumping to conclusions, when all we know is that the siegels are trying to take superman piece by piece....to be fair, alot of these rights issues are hitting the film division of supes rather than the comic one, which is why no one should be in panic mode just yet

no one is jumping to conclusions, as I stated , its just a theory, for fun, please stop insulting me, its really amazing how brave people are when they are hiding behind a computer.

Welcome to the wonderful world of message boards, jefonemillion. :woot:

I really hate when some dude puts some semi-logical, semi-horrendous theory out there, and is so taken aback by people actually disagree with him, he feels the need to defend is semi-logical, semi-horrendous theory for a month and a half.

It's what they are.

It's not what they should be.

So yeah no this won't happen.

Thanks for reminding me why i usually stay away from message boards. but anyhow it is a real possibility that DC may lose the rights to Superman in 2013 , my thread was meant to be a What if thing, please all you top posters , please forgive my ignorance , whatever, so back to topic, What if the Segiels win and refuse to license Superman to DC for whatever reason , what other character in the DCU could fill the gap, so far all I heard was Conner, you already know what I think. any ideas, and remember its just for fun. as the joker would say " Why so serious"
