Ridley Scott chats up the board game-to-film.
by Stax
February 11, 2008 - Among the many projects that director Ridley Scott currently has in development is a feature film version of the Parker Brothers board game Monopoly. Scott chatted up the game-to-film while attending this weekend's BAFTA awards.

"That's all in development," Scott told EmpireOnline.com when asked about Monopoly. "I've got no idea where we're going to go with that but it's the most popular board game in the world."

The filmmaker added, "What's amusing about Monopoly is that it underscores the mean side of people. Monopoly changes people, the nicest person becomes a monster – as soon as they buy Park Lane, that's it, they've all changed. I'm trying to figure out what tone of comedy it could be. It could be a really big film."

Scott's next project will be Nottingham, a Robin Hood re-imagining set to star Russell Crowe. That film is slated to go before camera post-writers' strike.

Beware, Monopoly might be only the beginning:

Universal Pictures and Hasbro announced Wednesday a six-year strategic partnership to produce at least four feature films based on some of Hasbro's best-known game and toy brands says Reuters.

Hasbro has the option of co-funding production of the films and will retain all merchandising rights to the brands with the first film to be out by 2010 or 2011 and at least one film a year released after that.

The manufacturer will partner exclusively with Universal for feature films with the exception of "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe," which are already setup at DreamWorks and Paramount.

Amongst these are such properties as Monopoly, Candy Land, Clue, Ouija, Battleship, Magic, the Gathering and Stretch Armstrong. Hasbro COO Brian Goldner says David Berenbaum is penning a draft for "Ouija" and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes will produce. He also says Hasbro is in negotiations with Ridley Scott on "Monopoly".

Hasbro is co-financing script development with Universal and has the option of co-funding production of the films. Hasbro will retain all merchandising rights to the brands, and the companies will share in consumer products revenue generated by the movies.

I wouldn't make it entirely like Rat Race, but more of a comedic Wall Street. Where the main characters are somewhat normal at first, but once they start making it big in the corporate world they turn on their partners, start getting devious, send people to prison, etc.

I wouldn't make it funny at all. The game certainly never was. It just had funny illustrations.

I wonder if the main characters will have elements of the game with them? You know, the shoe, that dog, the car, the iron...Star Wars characters...

Yes, after spending 6 hours playing with your family someone's going to get hurt.

Exactly. I mean tell me that game didn't bring out the dark, cruel apathetic side of people.

The Hasbro-Universal collaboration "Monopoly" is jumping a large number of spaces up the board.

The feature project has brought on Pamela Pettler to write the screenplay; She penned Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride," Gil Kenan's "Monster House" and the upcoming animated adventure "9," produced by Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.

And Ridley Scott, who has been attached as a producer on "Monopoly" and has been mentioned as a possible director, is now officially attached to helm the project, with an eye toward giving it a futuristic sheen along the lines of his iconic "Blade Runner."

In addition to Scott, Giannina Facio and Hasbro's Brian Goldner are also producing the movie, which will shape a narrative out of the iconic real-estate game. Lawrence Grey will oversee for Universal and Bennett Schneir will oversee for Hasbro.

"Monopoly" marks the latest Hasbro property to look to pass go and head to the big screen. Board games and branded properties have become more attractive as studios look to mitigate risk by finding built-in audiences.

Universal is working with Hasbro on several projects as part of a long-term development deal. Platinum Dunes is producing its feature adaptation of "Ouija Board," while the maritime classic "Battleship" is also in development. Elsewhere at Hasbro, Paramount this summer is set to release Stephen Sommers' feature based on its "G.I. Joe" character. And "Trivial Pursuit: America Plays" is now airing as a syndicated television program.

Hasbro, Scott and Pettler are all repped by WMA.

ok :whatever:.. when are they gonna make a Tetris movie? Now that'd be awesome! :hehe:

Hollywood's jumped the shark. No, I'm really excited about this. It's the kind of movie hollywood used to make before deciding to make everything either a sequel or an adaptation of books or comics.

No, we need Chess, the movie. King side castle *****es.

What?!? Jiminy Crickets, you're in possession of the rights to make movies of both "A Brave New World" and "The Forever War", yet you sign on to do the Monopoly movie.

Since there is no script for this as of yet, I can only hope that one or both of those other movies can get out the gate first.

I hope Ridley makes all the other projects on his "to do" list, before this.

After "Clue", I have to assume that any movie based on a board game has the potential to be watchable. In the hands of Ridley Scott, this should be pretty interesting.

Oh and I sucked at the game. lol. I never even played Clue and I failed every time I tried to play Monopoly.

I'm pretty sure that someone could make a decent movie about Chess. :p

Never mind Monopoly; I'm eagerly awaiting the movie adaptions of Ker-plunk, Hungry Hippos and Operation.

:whatever:

I'm still interested in seeing where this goes...however, the "Blade Runner" comment has me a bit..i guess confused..

Sure it's possible the real quesiton is how do you keep the monopoly spirit. What I mean by this, is that in Clue there were actual characters you could work wtih... In monopoly there are no characters besides Mr. MoneyBags, so you have to invent all new characters with there own set of indiviual problems, etc... So the only thing monopoly about it are hte places... Will this be the next INO

Posted a year or so ago...

This gives me great hopes for an eventual Hungry Hungry Hippos movie.

They need to make a Candyland movie and have Tim Burton direct.
