Linden Ashby had to be my favorite casting. In an interview, not more then 10 years ago, he had talked about how he and Christopher Lambert were set to film the third, i was really psyched but it eventually fell through. Now obviously these guys are too old unfortunately.

The more I think about it, the more that fake trailer sucks. Really? Everyone is all realistic and grimdark and mean for no reason? It's like someone watched Batman Begins and Casino Royale in one sitting and took the complete wrong idea from them.

Everyone wouldn't be though. The director said it himself. He would include the magic and fantastical elements as well.

Personally I enjoyed the short. Yeah, some of the dialogue was cheesy, and a lot of that has to do with White. He doesn't have the best delivery sometimes. But honestly, he wasn't that bad. And they did the thing in two days. That's pretty damn impressive to me.

I agree that the trailer is very overrated and not very faithful to the source material at all. Mortal Kombat has always been very comic bookish, and if you get rid off all the fantastical elements, what's left? That short was basically just a very violent fighting movie that happened to have some familiar names in it. I think Penny Arcade summed it up best:

It's pretty easy to see why the pitch didn't get picked up, IMO. It simply does not resemble Mortal Kombat enough that Warner Bros. would want to entrust the license to it. They could easily just change the names and they'd have a completely unrelated new IP, If you're going to put the name Mortal Kombat on something though, it had friggin' better at least somewhat look like the game.

This pitch trailer goes far beyond what Christopher Nolan did to the Batman mythos. This is more like if you took X-Men, and tried to make a movie out of it without giving anyone superpowers.

I believe an "Nolanize"(since that's name Hollywood seems to be using to make every sci-fi,comic book movie more "real", weren't their others before him?) MK film(s) can be made....The X-Men is a good example you have people w/"powers" that used their gifts for good/evil and it didn't come off as chessy either...in Mk we have ninja's, Gods, sorcerer's, humans, demons, shaman's, etc and how they gained their abilities is up to the writers' to make it so the audience can believe it(thats what a writer gets paid for).

Also like the X-Men, Mk is an ensemble cast, so they have to pick characters that serve the story and not cram every character just to please fans or just for the hell of it ala X3 & MK:A...so if this means no Cyrax, Sector or Jax w/metal arms then so be it you can't please every1...

IMO MK 1-3 are the best games to do a film off of because it felt more grounded its the games after that get to "Harry Potter-ish"...if their is a reboot then we need to see why certain characters align w/good or evil and our main cast needs to be fleshed out more..

my visions for MK: Begins (my working title) is we have the origins of the tournament explained through Raiden, the rise of Shao Kahn, Goro, Shang Tsung and their army...we have Lui Kang who was raised in the White Lotus Society who spent his entire life following in the footsteps of the Great Kung Lao preparing for the tournament...next we have Johnny Cage a narcisit C-list actor who claims "he's the best at what he does" and seeks approval from film critics and martialarts critics, he thinks the tournament is a joke, but thinks its a way to fame/money/respect...Lt. Sonya Blade is a 1 woman army out for vengeance against Kano, who has been recruited by Tsung, for torturing & killing her partner (this backstory gets explained) she is a good woman, but gives her new assigned partner Jaxs a hard time(Jax role is minor)...next we have Sub-Zero a Lin Kui ninja who was the personal bodyguard of Kitana, he was approached by Tsung to fight for their side, but refused, in doing so Tsung murdered Scorpion's family in the disguise as Sub-Zero and gained an ally in Scorpion...finally Princess Kitana, once lived in the realm of Edenia until it was destroyed by Tsung/Kahn, her dad was killed, and mom was forced to be Kahn's wife who l8er killed herself, Kitana watched in horror, on Kahns orders Tsung had Kitanna cloned into Mileena just in case Kitana ever revolted against him/and she was to watch Kitana...lastly Raiden god of thunder brings these five hereos together to compete in Mortal Kombat, through their journery they must learn to trust & believe in each other....

Villains we have; Tsung, Goro, Scorpion, Mileena, Kano, Reptile, Baraka

the sequel, should contain elements from Mk 2/3...Kahn has crossed the realms w/the help of sorcerer Quan Chi revived Queen Sindel his plan is to merge all realms into one nearly destroying all life, but Quan Chi has his own agenda...this is the movie where alliances onced formed are broken, hero's will become prisoners, die, and new hero's will emerge and Raiden cannot interfear its up to hero's past and present to work together and Kombat Kahn
Heroes: Lui Kang, Johnny Cage(dies), Jax, Sonya/Kitana(both get captured) Kung Lao, Stryker, Sub-Zero
Allies: Nightwolf(train/guides new warriors for Raiden) Jade(bff of Kitana, dies), Raiden
Villians: Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, Sindel, Sheeva, Ermac, Tanya(betrayed Edenia),Rain(once engage to Kitana), Smoke(former Lin Kuei ninja )

from the list characters its obvious who fights who, I know its alot but if done right we would have an awesome movie...

I can't even see how people are actually enjoying it? This may actually be WORSE than the bastardization that was Legends of Chun Li

Keep it like the source material or don't bother doing it at all, I'm sick of the "real world" mentality hollywood has since the success of Batman Begins. Not every single superhero or video game based movie has to be "nolan-ized" (for lack of a better term).

ewww...smells like fanfic in here

its not a fanfic i don't have that much time on my hands, but the point I was trying to make is that their are characters established with good or subtle backgrounds and they can take that and turn into a good action/adventure movie w/o ppl realizing it came from a game and also it would video games turned into films more repsect from critics

all I did was take what I know of the universe and try to spawn 2 films, a 3rd whom don't know, but if I can develop a plot then surely their are professional writers who can do the same and a director thant deliver it w/o making these character's human turned homocidial maniacs

the original game creators based johnny cage on van damme, so id love to see a step up from that and see scott adkins given a central role, you dont need big names for MK a good mix of martials arts actors and character actors would be great, jai white is ace and i was quite suprised but actually liked the idea of jero ryan not really a fan of her but moving sonya more into an investigatvie role may be a positive move

You nailed it with this.

Rock Sexton, you are really good at not reading the other side of the argument

I've read the other side and I feel as there's no merit to it. I understand he had a limited budget so I give him some leeway. The problem in my mind is if some studio exec decides to stick to that grounded formula. As stated, it's just a fighting film at that point, not MK.

Mortal Kombat is just not cinematic material. It's not a story.

I don't mind some level of grounding. Even the first Movie did it. Liu, Johnny and Sonya had none of their projectiles moves from the game, though they did pull off some of their other signature moves. Like Liu Kang's bicycle kick. Although completely ridiculous, they managed to pull it off actually good looking. And Johnny's shadow kick, though they probably thought they could get away with it, if they had him directly jump into Scorpion's teleportation, making it some of distortion of the surrounding.

If a new Movie gets made, they should really do away with almost all of the special moves, unless it directly ties into the origin of the character and there's some sort of explanation behind it. Sub-Zero should keep his ice abilities, because it's some sort of secret art that gets passed down from generation to generation. Scorpion obviously keeps his because he's a spectre. All the other humans should have no supernatural abilities whatsever. Most of them just have specials for the hell of it. Like Kabal. Why does he have speed moves? Fun in the game, but would look silly on screen.

The first Movie begs to differ. And what do you mean not a story? Mortal Kombat, as mediocre as games have become, is one of the few fighting games that actually has a story that you can follow. And it's typical fantasy fair filled with magic and mysticism. Warriors that fight against an ancient evil that wants to conquer their world. You can easily tell a story around that.

Easily? The first and second movie beg to differ.

Mortal Kombat is about a series of one-on-one fights. That's not a story. The 'story' is just an excuse to explain why they are fighting. No-one plays Mortal Kombat for the story.

Of course it's about the fighting. Just like any other martial arts Movie. And in each of them the story is just an excuse to have them fight. And Mortal Kombat offers a rich lore of interesting characters, settings and history.

A series of one-on-one fights is not good cinema. It just isn't.

However, having thought about this, if the tournament is just the last third of the movie, and the first two parts introduce the characters and build up a story which climaxes with the tournament, it could work. Ala Karate Kid.

Everyone wouldn't be though. The director said it himself. He would include the magic and fantastical elements as well.
I take what people say after complains come out with a grain of salt. What is everyone's big beef with the short? The over realismisation of it (I totally just invented a word). What does the director immediately say right after that just sounds a little like empty placation.... "There's gonna be magic and stuff!"

and Gil, you should know that you don't need a reason to be mean
I know. But those were my actual thoughts after watching it again. And thinking it over a little.

Loved the trailer, **** the haters. That is all.
You know. I dislike the use of that phrase here. I'm not hating to hate... I save that for the blackmake of Death at a Funeral.

Mortal Kombat is just not cinematic material. It's not a story.
I would agree and disagree at the same time. The game itself is not very good with story.... but if you were to take one of the million back stories that are sometimes great, THAT would make an excellent movie.

It doesn't even to have be tournament centered or just be about 1on1 fights. The first game was about the tournament, the 2nd game had a silly story, so moving on, in the 3rd everything went to hell when Shao Kahn tried to merge earth with Outworld anyway.

You could craft a typical fantasy story about a crisis of 2 worlds merging. Actually show the effects of it on the rest of the population, the military trying to fend off the invading forces, Raiden devicing a plan with the surviving heroes to take down Shao Kahn, etc. You could craft a story without any actual fighting happening for the first 30-45 minutes.

I liked the trailer. I loved playing Mortal Kombat, but I was never big on backstory or anything. Thats why I was able to enjoy the trailer so easily. I'm not big on the MK lore.

I can understand why people are so angry about the origins being changed though.

They shouldnt be. Anybody who is is basically mad over nothing. So wat if the two of them arent from outworld. It's just two character and the director has already mention that he didnt decide to completely get rid of any of the fantasy side of things. There's no need to even be mad becuase they arent even the two most important characters.
