''Boon says Mortal Kombat X will have a roster at least as big as the last Mortal Kombat''.

Well, that's reassuring. We're at least not getting less characters because each have 3 styles.
Like the previous MK before dlc?
  1. Raiden
  2. Liu Kang
  3. Johnny Cage
  4. Sonya Blade
  5. Kung Lao
  6. Jax
  7. Kitana
  8. Jade
  9. Mileena
  10. Scorpion
  11. Sub-Zero
  12. Noob Saibot
  13. Smoke
  14. Reptile
  15. Ermac
  16. Stryker
  17. Kabal
  18. Nightwolf
  19. Cyrax
  20. Sektor
  21. Sheeva
  22. Quan Chi
  23. Shang tsung
  24. Kano
  25. Baraka
  26. Cyber Sub-Zero
That must mean we will see more character rows in the grid

No its Freddy Krugger again. I think the only reason they did that was because the Movie was coming out though.

If the roster is at least as big as MK9(I assume without dlc)then 26 is nice but so 16 returning characters and 10 new?..or likely 10 returning with 16 new?

So Cassie is the MK's Jin Kazama...well so far on the surface anyway.

I really hope they use something like time travel or alternate dimensions to bring back characters that people assume wont be in this

What if they have a ton of new characters with a couple returning characters who are alive at end of MK9 then have a big dlc pack with old characters as fan service and not connected to story since they died or were not in involved in MK9?

that's likely whats going to happen. I prefer the characters in the game then have to pay extra for down the road as DLC

Free dlc packs exists but would likely just be free or discounted with a season pass

Well, I won't be getting this on launch day, anyway. I'll wait for the complete edition, since I'm not getting the PS4 this year.

They are not going to go through the trouble of creating characters and just give them away for free

Someone over at MKO, created a Thread to come up with 3 fighting styles for existing characters. I have to say, it's pretty tough to come up with 3 variations. With Scorpion, you could easily create 2 variations, from all the moves he got over the years. But even his 3rd variation had to be made up from scratch. He never summoned demons in a fight before, it's a first in MKX.

New characters are obviously designed with 3 variations in mind. Look at Cassie Cage, she's basically a combo of Sonya, Johnny, Stryker and Sektor. So she's got a buttload of moves. But what would you do with a character like Baraka? What 3 different variations could you possibly give him?

So that got me thinking. Does the need to have 3 variations of each character, allow us to already rule out certain characters as returning fighters in MKX?

Well they already did the whole 3 styles in MK DA and Deception and this is a variation of that. All they need to do is come up with at least two variations and a third could easily just be a weapon based one. I don't think coming up with 3 per character is all that difficult. I do think coming up with 3 for 25+ character without getting repetitive might be though

MKDA&D were a bit different though. Those were 2 different martial arts styles, and 1 weapon style. In MKX, everyone basically keeps their fighting style, but special Moves change. And I don't want to see something like the past games, where they had to give everyone 2 unique martial arts styles, and then quickly ran out of good ones. And I don't want every single character to run around with a weapon as their third style, because they couldn't come up with anything else.

I really hope NRS didn't bit off more than they can chew, with this decision.

I think coming up with three different fighting styles was more difficult than special move changes. a lot of the old characters have such a large array of moves between all the games they've appeared in that it generally wouldn't be an issue. Divide that up while throwing in some new ones to expand upon what they had. Using your example of Baraka, one style could be his traditional moveset around his blade with the spin, chop chop blades and blade throw. Another could be more acrobatic based where he has special moves which have him using the blades to launch him towards the opponent and they could give him more moves in the air to make him a beast in aerial based combos. Finally a third style could be original for him, where he is utilized more like Wolverine, using his blades for closer melee based moves and attacks

Personally I hope they don't go that route. I would prefer they focus on the new characters and get them established well within the fan base. Bringing everyone back time and time again takes away the significance of death, also it feels like each game is basically a reboot.

they could also make a style for Baraka where he didnt even use his blades, give him a speed boost or something to cancel out

Im sure they will, but they're still going to bring back the most popular characters. There will never be an MK without some of these core characters(Sub Zero, Scorpion etc)

Maybe that'll be the new running joke. Everyone that dies, comes back as a practically immortal spectre.

Clearly, most will just appear during a scene in the netherrealm having a pizza party. Quan Chi just wanted people to come to his birthday party.

Yeah they have to bring back the poster boys of the franchise I get that. I'm hoping they bring back Mileena since she is my fav character. But I just don't want to see the entire MK9 cast back in MKX unless it is entirely roster purposes only and not story.

Speaking of Quan Chi, I'm hoping Scorpion finally finds out the truth in this game. He is too much of a fan favorite and iconic face to be a puppet to someone else for 2 games in a row.

It's actually funny, you'd think for being Boon's clear favorite, they'd treat Scorpion better. Sure, he pretty much always wins in the Trailers, but in the story he's a complete putz.

I'm already slightly worried that he still keeps accusing Sub-Zero of murder in the gameplay vids. I just hope that's still early in the story, and he won't be a complete idiot for whole 25 years.

It's every other game where he flip flops with Subby between "We're buddies." to "YOU KILLED MY CLAN! MURDERMURDERMURDERMURDER!!!"
