Mortal Kombat XI returns to its bloody roots

Boon had a choice. Shaolin Monks 2 or MK vs DC. He went with the latter

Really? Because Shaolin Monks wasn't made by the MK Team. They were actually making a sequel, but it was about Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

“When they finished [Shaolin Monks], the guys at Paradox were gonna do another one called Fire & Ice. It was gonna be a co-operative Scorpion and Sub-Zero game,” Boon said. “They actually started the early stages of that game, but they couldn’t do it in time and under budget, so the project was canceled and kind of went away.”

I remember him saying he had the choice aronud the time of MK vs DC's release. Paradox was shut down, or rather merged with another studio after Midway collapsed. They were put on TNA Impact and Boon was given the choice of which MK project to proceed with. He chose the fighter

MK's on an upswing now and if this next game proves sucessful, that might give them the oppurtunity to start branching the series out again and that could include a sequel to Shaolin Monks and/or another spinoff
The game is shaping up nicely. I think it'll be successfull.
But Shaolin Monks was released back in 2005, and we're going for a reboot now, so I guess SM2 is just a distant dream.

I don't know if I like this idea.
They should've just continued where the first SM left off, incorporating MK3 and MK4, this time.

It could have been about MK3 & 4. Sub-Zero would be on the run from the Cyborgs and in MK4, Scorpion was after Sub-Zero. Though I wonder how they would have done the story, as both aren't exactly the best of friends.

I think I would have prefered it as a sequel from Liu and Lao's point of view.
We were able to play as Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the first too. Maybe we could have a smaller portion of the second game for them.

If memory serves Scorps was generally pretty cool as far as the younger Sub-Zero went, at least once he realized that he wasn't the same man. I know Quan Chi tricked him in 4 into thinking Subs was his family's murderer but he sorted that out by the end.

and whether ya like it or not, Boon chose WISELY. MK Vs DCU and it's 3 million units sold are what prompted WB to by the damn IP. Shaolin Monks 2 wouldn't have saved them.

MK vs DCU 2 WILL happen, 3 million units sold says so. MKDC sold better than any of it's three 3D counterparts.

I don't think it was a wise choice, MK vs DCU was the only MK game on next gen consoles, so if you were a die hard fan, you really had no other option. Shaolin Monks was one of the better MK games on last gen consoles despite the fact that it wasn't a straight up one on one fighting game. If they would have released the Fire and Ice game on next gen consoles and improved on everything that Shaolin Monks had, it would have sold just as much

Also, Shaolin Monks sold over 1 million copies + the products that came along with the release, such as toys, and it was received positively. Word of mouth is always good too.
A proper sequel with proper ad, taking and improving the formula used could have achieved the 3 million copies that MKvsDC sold. Maybe even more.

And I really hope they don't try a MKvsDC2. I want them to focus on Mortal Kombat solely.

You misunderstand my point. IF Fire and Ice had been made and sold 3 million units, Midway STILL would have went under with no one even moderately interested in buying the IP. When Midway went to the auction block, NO ONE other WB was interested and the only reason they were is because MKDC preformed well. Not to mention Midway didn't have the resources to put into a quality adventure game. Midway LA was already gone and Edwards a part of the core MK team.

Ed and co. made the right decision. They still have jobs because of it.

I see.
I thought MK vs DC came after WB bought MK, not before.
It's a shame it wasn't made, anyway.
But I really hope they consider SM2 before they ever consider a sequel to MK vs DC.

I hope they focus on the core MK series as well, but to completely write off the possibility and probability of a sequel to MK Vs DCU is simply being naive.

I'm sad that 360 won't get an exclusive character, but it won't discourage me from buying it. I blame WB loving Sony all of a sudden. :/

the 360 gets its fair share of exclusives....it all balances out

In the Game Informer article confirming Jade and Goro, Boon also said that the 360 may have an exclusive character too, since PS3 is getting Kratos.

I wouldn't be suprised if the 360 exclusive character is Marcus Fenix

Which exclusives?

DOA4, The first Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Bioshock ( and ninja gaiden 2) was originally
an XBox exclusive, Halo, limbo, The XBox usually gets Bethesda's and COD DLC first, The Xbox version of Virtua Fighter 5 has online play.... I could go on but I wont...

I thought he was talking about exclusives in the MK game?
Like the PS3 will have an exclusive character.

i read the article too, and boon says that no xbox character has been made, and if it does happen it will be as DLC and down the road, not with release.

I think WB buying MK was the best thing that could have happened, with WB backing them, they can do tons with the property (i saw an interview where ed said that WB wants to eventually do movies, comics, tv shows etc, this is exactly what MK needed, a backer that actually has $$ and can promote the characters)

I read the news on a site, which talked about the article.
Maybe they translated it wrongly, then.

isn't WB developing a movie? most of the positive feedback that last summer's fan made video got supposedly put things in motion over at WB to start up a new film

i liked that video. just hope they don't try to go that "realistic" route the director was trying to accomplish. the tone, setting, and overall filming was great. and i think that Michael Jai White would make a perfect Jax. i just hope they don't kill off Johnny Cage
