Pretty simple question - what would you say is the most "overrated" movie you have ever seen? I can't think of my answer, it will take me some time to find the one, but I was recently let down by the Martian. I'd say it's pretty overrated IMO; I know most will disagree with me, but it got me thinking.
What other movies have you seen that just don't live up to the hype? Apologies if there is a thread for this, I looked in the misc. films section and couldn't find one.

X-Men: Days of future past is the first that comes to mind.

Avatar is interesting because it came and went with little to no lingering fanfare.

I'd actually say its my favorite of the X-men series lol. I haven't seen First Class in a while so I'd have to watch that one to reassess.

See when I first saw DofP, I thought it was the best of the franchise. When I started breaking it down at home, its not a great film IMO and that's due to lazy and convenient writing. It was saved by a couple of good performances but some things just don't make sense narratively. Things just happen "just because" or for "reasons".

It's certainly not without its flaws, but I really enjoyed it. It suffers from Kinberg's touch but I truly do like Bryan Singer and think his influence is what saved the project from being forgettable and formulaic (at least in my eyes). But I also don't hold the first two movies in as high a regard as some others.
My biggest problem with DOFP was the magical serum. That is the epitome of convenience, and I'm sure it was Kinberg's idea.

I think X-2 is still the best of the bunch. Singer saved DofP from rather a mediocre screenplay. Lawd have mercy Kinbergs draft was terrible and yes the magic serum was his ****ing idea.

For me, it's a toss up between:

Avatar
The Godfather
The Avengers
Frozen
Inglourious Basterds
Anything by Wes Anderson

This subject has been the source of a lot of threads already, although they may have been inactive for so long that they can't be resurrected.

That being said, my pick for most overrated film is Stanley Kubrik's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Such a boring film.

My original thought is Avatar, but so many people call it overrated, I think it may now actually be more properly rated. I have to go with Gladiator. It's not bad by any means, but why is this thing so loved? I just don't get Ridley Scott with the exception of Blade Runner.

The first two that came to mind were The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy for me.

I don't really get the concept of labeling a certain movie as most overrated when we have different tastes as audiences and the movies have different genres. For example, 2001 A Space Odyssey is labeled as a great movie because it really IS great visually and technically during the time it was released. But if you don't view it with a certain perspective it doesn't really do anything to you as a viewer.

I said the same thing in a previous thread and it got into a bit of debate over it although I can't remember offhand just why it was.

Still haven't gotten around to re-watching it yet. The thought of trying to do so has not motivated me.

The Dark Knight
Guardians of the Galaxy
Star Wars Episode 3

Avatar instantly springs to mind. It looked good, but apart from that?

There's already an Avatar discussion thread. This thread is redundant.

The Dark Knight

Avatar is not overrated, it was overhyped which is a completely different thing.

Speak for yourself. I watched it for the first time cold, knowing nothing about its reputation or historic significance and I cried like a baby at the end.

Avatar is always brought up but after the film was done in theaters, no one really gave a crap about it anymore.

I don't know about most overrated ever, but the most recent overrated one for me is Birdman.
