Can someone explain to me the hype/following/critical acclaim of the Silence of the Lambs? I've just never thought it was anything special, especially when you compare it to similar movies.

Feel free to discuss any other movies you think are overrated (but lets leave superhero movies out of this... No one wants to hear whining about how overrated Batman Begins or any of the Spider-Man movies are).

Children of Men, I understand that the symbolism and unique dystopian vision made it interesting, but I didnt see what all the hype was about, to me it seemed like a low budget amature film, and i thought the way they executed a lot of aspects of the film just wasn't very good.

I'd venture to say that the story itself and characters, even the dialogue is nothing special, and nothing not seen in a lot of other movies. No, Silence of the Lambs is a classic because everything is done so well, so well, that it's almost perfect. The acting is absolutely superb. The direction is flawless. And the central premise of a rookie FBI agent who can only rescue the girl from a serial killer with help from an even worse serial killer is a great one.

Have to disagree big time. Disregarding EVERYTHING else about the film, the visual acheivements are ones to be marveled at. The "documentary" type feel was intentional- if you need proof of how crazy genius it is just rewatch the last 30 minutes or so and try counting how many times the camera actually switches.

Well everybody has different tastes, but putting those asides, I know I'm in the minority.

Yah the documentary feel was intentional, and i wasnt a fan of it..the city was so cool in the end, and the last 30 minutes was great but the whole film besides that part and the beginning seemed to take place in like a field/country road/farm etc. It reminded me of 28 days later a bit, and just because the camera doesnt switch doesnt mean the scene is any better, it just means it was well thought out and rehearsed.

Im not a fan of alfonso cauron, everyone thinks he made the best Potter movie, its my least favourite, and the little princess and Y tu mama tambien didnt impress me that much either.

Equilbrium.

That movie was ridiculous.

A cheap rehashing of Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451.

And everyone drives 1990s sedans in the future? Laaaaaame.

Napoleon Dynamite
Lost in Translation

This is the thread were we say that all these great movies that come down through the years are overrated cause most people have bad taste. Casablanca and Citizen Kane are overrated but the new Adam Saddler or Will Ferral movie that comes out are better.

I don't mind these kinds of discussions because it's a matter of opinion however it does tend to get ridiculous with those who are completely ignorant to film, especially since when you give them a valid reason why your wrong they just go around yelling how your elitist. For example Jack Rabbit, valid opinion and one I agree with. However if I were to post I don't like Easy Rider(which I don't) and that it's over-rated, that'd be pretty ignorant considering what Easy Rider did in terms of independent film-making. Just my two-cents on teh whole ove-rated discussions...

Most boring movie I have ever seen. And I've seen LOTS of boring movies.

Is this like the thread of the damned? Doomed forever to wander the planet, forever unappreciative of decent films?
