Moving to Cali

yea but the hills are a bit to expensive, my sisters just want to live anywhere thats close enough to UCLA, we don't care if itl be a 20 min to an hour commute.

also il look any job listings a few months before we move, that way i can be assured a job after i move out there.

i may also be moving with 3 friends of mine, we all share the same business dream, skate and surf shop.

i can do inventory, my friend Louis is great with business he went to schooling for it, as well as Sean, and my friend thatcher knows alot about boards clothing shoes and such so hed be good with inventory too, we just have to pool our money, buy a cheap enough store buy bulk items and advertise and hopefully we do well, i don't care how much time money and effort goes in, were gonna make it happen.

we have to do alot of research before hand.

If you want to be near the beach as well as the Westwood area (UCLA) I would look at Santa Monica or Venice but I would have no clue as to how good a surf shop would do there given the competition.

And Beverly Hills has a range of pricing which goes from the relatively cheap to the uber expensive unlike Bel Air which goes from very expensive to uber expensive. ;)

Some parts of Long Beach is good, mostly downtown if you can afford it. Santa Anna is probably the worst city in the O.C. Carson is right next to Compton and Whittier is mostly a mexican neighborhood. :)

true that lol,

what would you recommend?

oh but i will, everyone has a chance, its not all about conforming to the system, people are different.
It has nothing to do with "conforming to the system" it has to do with your work ethic, and when you have none, no one will even consider giving you a chance to open a business.

inglewood is an all black are?

what about long beach or Santa Anna, Newport, Carson or Whittier?

any of those places good to live.

Wow, that age old Southern Cal debate of: "Should I live in Inglewood, Carson, Whittier or Newport?" That one comes up a lot.

Ah the young foolish years, those were the days

With a second rate education, all you can hope for is a second rate job. If you move to a "popular" place (like the coast), it's harder to find a job because there are more folks looking for work there (more competition). Before you make the move, get some papers from the area, see how easy it would be to find a job that would suit you.

As far as starting your own business with your friends go, it's a great way to lose your friends and most new businesses tank in the first year.

Inglewood is a pretty black area.

Those options aren't bad but you were talking about wanting to be close to UCLA earlier, and those aren't close.

Honestly your best option is not southern california. I mean, there's already plenty of people with g.e.d.s working around here. There are already more skate and surf shops than you could imagine. I mean, you're talking about trying to make it in a place where you have no advantage over people who are already here. Maybe you should look at Oregon...

Inland Empire. Honestly alot of people are moving out of L.A. going farther to the desert. People just cant afford to live in or near L.A. anymore.

I don't know why more people don't go to community college.

Wait, yes, I do. They feel they're missing out on the, "college experience," if they don't go to some university. :whatever:

most people who go to university's go mostly for the partying, booze and girls, i want to go to learn and better myself.

You are missing out on the college experience if you don't go to a university and while part of it is partying, booze and girls, it's also learning to manage your time, getting your toes in the water to learn to live on your own, plus the course work is A LOT more difficult. I went to a four-year university and needed to take two science classes, one I took at the university, one during the summer at a community college, the unversity course was very difficult, the community college course was a cakewalk and they were both courses I did well in at high school. Community college while a good choice for some people, is really just high school v2.0, living away from home at a four-year University is much, much different because while there's the in class lessons at both, the out of class learning is much greater at the University.

What are some good areas around L.A i wanna be near the city of la but also close enough to the beaches as well, im looking for good schools, communitys, stuff like that, im interested in long beach, Pasadena or Inglewood.

any other suggestions, i wanna get everything set up by next year.

me and my sister will split the down payment on a rental house.

You should move to Santa Monica and go to SCC. SCC has the most transferable credits.

If you can tolerate all the tweakers.

it doesn't have to be an amazing area, just something decent and affordable, but in your opinion do you like cali?
LOVE cali wouldnt live anywhere else in the WORLD

I'd really disagree that the coursework is more difficult at a university.

well i've been put down all my life, and this is something i really want to do, i can learn on my own time about opening a business, i can ask my friend Cory, his dad owns one, my dad owns one i can ask him too.

and i don't want to work at fast food places, i wanna do something great with my life.

One of the best ways to change that is change things in your life, complete high school, respect the rules so your not getting suspended within the first month, get a part-time job. Seriously everything you've posted on this board reeks of someone who wants to be respected, but won't work for the respect, you want it to be handed to you, you have to earn respect through your actions, you just continue to do dumb stuff and acting like a little kid.

If you want to be the next McDonalds, sure.:cwink:

Is it not ever small businesses dream to become McDonalds? International success feels good, I bet. :oldrazz:

I am just saying that it is possible - in fact one of the best people I know had to drop out of school to work full time, went back, got her GED and hopes to start her own restaurant. She is an amazingly smart, gifted, hard working person - so I would like to think that she has a chance.

Now, from what I have seen from Ice-Man, he fits none of the above adjectives.

He will probably fail - yay.

I'd really disagree that the coursework is more difficult at a university.

I disagree, while I was enrolled at a university I took several general ed at the nearby community college just so I didn't have to put as much effort into the subjects I sucked at, ie. chem and math.

i love half cocked plans in high school, it makes life so entertaining...

Also if you're too lazy to put in the work for school, where will the motivation to put the work into your business come from. I can guarantee it's gonna be infinitely more work than high school, are you prepared to put in 70-80 hours a week to get this off the ground. Also you're gonna need a loan, who's gonna lend money to a kid who was to lazy to finish high school?

It has nothing to do with "conforming to the system" it has to do with your work ethic, and when you have none, no one will even consider giving you a chance to open a business.

I sense a theme. :o

Will any of this advice resonate with Icy and overcome his notable obstinance. :ninja:

Tune in for the next thread in ...My So-Called Mafia Life. :hyper:

im going for my ged soon, my dad called with with plans for a meeting with this program in long beach.

It never occurred to you that it could have been easier not due to content and coursework, but due to smaller class size?

those two are my weak points as well.

with this ged program il be out within a few months to year, its 4 days week 4 hours a day.

no, because class sizes were the same if not bigger at the CC! The university I attended had stupid requirements, minimum writing and group work for all subjects. Given that most the subjects I took were ones I'd expect to do a lot writing in and welcomed it, I didn't feel like taking the time to do book reports for math.
