Ms. Marvel in the works?

It's pretty hilarious how much hoopla has been made over a costume that's been around for decades and has never been considered particularly sexy among comic book heroines. Seriously, Ms. Marvel has always been regarded as pretty conservative --- not just in her politics, but in her dress. She doesn't show *nearly* as much skin as most heroines (WW, Emma Frost, Elektra, Starfire, Gamora, She Hulk, Power Girl to name a few), and in fact, covers up most of her skin with the "stripper" gloves and boots.

But *if* some people find bare thighs soooo offensive and titillating, then I'll suggest again what I suggested before: put on some black stockings/tights under the swimsuit. Mission accomplished. This ---

---should not be considered remotely sexy (except by pervs who can sexualize *anything*). It's the same kind of innocuous costumes that women of all ages --- little girls on up to old ladies --- wear every day to aerobics, yoga and ballet classes.

It's not how *sexy* or *offensive* the costume is. I can't believe people don't get this?

Emma Frost and Spider-Woman's entire powersets are based around their seduction and sexuality. One of She-Hulk's biggest personality traits is her sensuality. Their costumes make sense purely on the level of who the characters are.

Ms Marvel is a former US Air Force pilot. Why does she wear thigh high stripper boots?

Exactly!

Um....no. On multiple fronts.

Emma Frost's power sets are telepathy and the ability to harden herself into a form as hard as diamond. Spider-Woman's power set is the usual superstrength plus the ability to shoot venom blasts. Yes, she emits pheromones that can drive people crazy, but she has no control over that; it's just a side effect. And over the years, many writers have chosen to ignore that aspect of her altogether, and/or give her the ability to disguise the pheromone effect. And Shulkie's power set is...pretty obvious. Shulkie Smash.

In either event, Emma Frost's power set does not require her to traipse around in lingerie, nor Jess Drew to wear a skintight red & yellow latex, nor Jennifer Walters to run around in a one-piece. So no, their sexy costumes make no more (or no less) sense than Carol's one-piece.

Also: Ms. Marvel isn't an Air Force pilot. In 616 *or* Ultimates. Dunno where that old myth got started, or why it hangs around. Carol *is* in the Air Force, yes, but in security. She is a top security chief for the AF in both classic and Ultimate versions.

Emma Frost is always seducing people. That's kind of her thing. Just like She-Hulk's thing is always being really open with her sexuality. That's how the characters are written.

And the pheromones are a specific part of Spider-Woman's powers.

As characters it sort of kind of makes sense why they would dress the way they do.

And my use of the word pilot is such an oddly specific thing to be so emphatic about. Yes, I misspoke. (mistyped?) But that doesn't change the point of my post.

I wonder if she would be included in Avengers 2 if DC's Wonder Woman project finally gets going.. we'll see.. the new costume is fine; since it covers her all over, all the folks who carp about skinsploitation would shut up, at least..

..I wonder would Carol be given her energy bolts at all or just given the flight/strength/invulnerability..

Hmmm... yeah this has been said twice now, but again: it's not about the skin, or being sexy, it's about the article of clothing that a) doesn't flow naturally from the character/story and b) works against the character being anything more than a sex fantasy.

Also, skintight things are quite sexy, provided the wearer is shapely. I'm not sure why you think only pervs think women in yoga pants are sexy. Maybe all the yoga practitioners in your area are little girls and old ladies. *shrug*

Not only that, but their costumes aren't purely sexual... well, Emma's is, but Shulkie is in a one piece, she's not just showing off her bod, she's showing how powerful she is. Spider-Woman is wearing a jumpsuit, and honestly, it's as sexy or unsexy as the artist decides it is (incredibly, they always draw it as sexy as reasonably possible).

I wonder if she would be included in Avengers 2 if DC's Wonder Woman project finally gets going.. we'll see.. the new costume is fine; since it covers her all over, all the folks who carp about skinsploitation would shut up, at least..

I'd hope she'd get all her powers. You have a whole half/two thirds of a movie to explain them before she gets them, why not give her the whole she-bang.

But again, the issue is not showing the skin, it's the emotional and narrative meaning of the costume.

Ultimately this thread is kind of amusing, as I don't see her showing up in the next 3 years (save maybe a cameo appearance as a civilian Carol Danvers.)

On the flip-side of the costume, how would everyone feel if after Mar-Vell died, she took on the name "Captain Marvel". I can see Marvel doing that just to beat DC to the punch.

She got a call sign: Cheeseburger

So she has three jobs before turning into Ms Marvel
1. USAF pilot probably her first job due she enters military through local ROTC
2. Military intelligence be it within the USAF or other body
3. Some kind of space agency, perhaps NASA or SWORD

I also prefer Warbird, as it's a natural way to work that name into the thing.

edit: Cheeseburger is hilarious, and adds a dimension to the character. Warbird's a bit on the nose.

Okay, that explains it....it's something writers have added post-CW, circa 2008. I quit reading Ms. Marvel shortly after CW and Mighty Avengers. Least now I know where all the fighter pilot stories come from.

Spider-Woman did save Ms Marvel from drowning after she was tossed off the Golden Gate Bridge by Rogue. Maybe Carol was extremely grateful, which is why that picture seems to show the two of them getting jiggy wit' it.

After having seen a few Ms. Marvel cosplayers, and actress Jennifer Hale, appear at the Supanova at Sydney, I'm all for a Ms. Marvel movie! She's great, whether or not you agree with what happened during Civil War.

What was Jennifer Hale doing there? Was she in cosplay costume too? I'm not actually sure what she looks like, but I love her voice. She does sound different as Carol though to how she sounded as Felicia Hardy in Spider-Man the animated series. She's a great voice actress.

I'd like to know that as well.

Anyway, I was thinking about what Ms. Marvel's personality and character arc might be in a movie?

I'm thinking, for her own movie, she'd be the real serious career type who learns not to take her job so seriously and grows into this vary vivacious superhero who loves life, and loves her jobs and lives it like it's her last day, because she knows from experience her time with the people she cares about can't be taken for granted. So by the time she joins the team, she's the fun one.

Yeah, I think a fun-lovin' free spirit girl would be the way to go to connect with more women in the audience and to get the best box office, rather than trying to focus on her as some srs bsns ass-kicka sista. Think Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Katherine Heigl. No, I'm not suggesting that those play Carol Danvers; just that Carol have that kind of rom-com/girl-power personality.

I thought fun loving free spirit girl = Wasp.

Danvers is more professional and task oriented.

Yeah, not digging the fun loving rom/com mindset personality change for Carol. Leave that alone for the Wasp.

I wouldn't call a woman with a long reputation of being a drunk and a philanderer (a literal female version of Tony Stark's personality) very professional or task-oriented. She's kinda like that girl at the party who's had wayyyy too much to drink and now she's just making everyone uncomfortable to be around her. Yeah, a lot of that was "offscreen" in the comics, while the writers focused on her trying to shake that image and sober up.

All characters in good movies go through a mindset change. Usually successful female leads (romcom or otherwise ie Hunger Games, even raw action like Kill Bill) have an even more deeply reaching arc that affects their personality and such. Serious to fun is just one possibility. What kind of arc would you guys suggest for Carol?

How about: going from an out-of-control drunk to professional and task-oriented? :cwink:

I prefer her to be just task/work oriented than to dwell upon flaws -> like that ever helped Carol Danvers likeability in the comics and Marvel comics on the whole.

A drinking Tony Stark is enough to cover for all males & females of the MCU.

Wasp = fun loving woman
Ms Marvel = more serious, career oriented woman.
