The Dark Knight MUST be 'R' Rated...

I think they SHOULD film a few things that might make it rated R, but save them for the DVD. like they should have done with the melted face Scarecrow in BB.

Well, the only reason I assumed it was British, was becuase the thread-starter who used the term, is apparently Welsh. I apparently assumed wrong.

BB was 12A (PG-13) in UK and still it was great movie, just cos a movie is 18 (R) doesn't mean it's a great movie. There are movies that are R but sucked so making TDK 12A is ok and still can be enjoyable film.

Did i say British, i meant English... which makes my series of posts moot... I'ma, gonna go over there and lay down, before I hurt myself

even so... insinuation can be quite powerful. we don't need to see much to get the point about the joker and his cruelty.

Rated R? Right, because Batman comics were never intended for kids.

Oh. Wait.

Bat-movies for kids? Crappy suggestion.
Because the comics were intended for kids? Crappier basis.

How so? Just because something is suitable for kids to watch, doesn't mean it has to be silly or watered-down. TAS was kid-friendly and some of the episodes of that show were among the best Batman stuff ever done in any medium. Batman 89 is essentially suitable for kids, as is Batman Begins. They were both serious films with a little cussing and some violence - neither of which is particularly inappropriate. Hell, I read "The Dark Knight Returns" when I was in middle school. Death, violence, and the suggestion of sex are not really inappropriate for children. It's EXPLICIT violence, sex scenes, or language that are inappropriate. And that kind of stuff has NEVER been a part of the Batman stories.

Most people only know these ratings though:

Y
G
PG
PG-13
R

What the hell is "Y"? Suitable for yaks? I mean "G" is General Audiences, which means, EVERYBODY. Does "Y" mean "This movie is so ******ed your parents will kill themselves if they have to watch it with you"?

Nah its PG-13 and Warner could need more money especially around this time. They really wanted so bad for The Prestige especially Flags of our Fathers to bring them in loads of money but I think it will just be decent not huge at the box office.

Pretty much, yeah. Mainly for preschoolers in general.

Y = For severe simpletons only...

Here is what Wikipedia describes:

TV-Y (Kids' Audiences)
Whether animated or live-action, the themes and elements in this program are specifically designed for a very young audience, including children from ages 2-6. This program is not expected to frighten younger children. Shows like Pokémon (Kids WBs heavily edited version), SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Thomas and Friends and many other children's series have a TV-Y rating.

Man, it's frightening there's even a category for that. I have a feeling anything rated Y would make Sesame Street look like Team America: World Police.

Do people WANT their children growing up to be bubbleheads?

They do if they don't take their kid's to The Dark Knight.

It'll never happen. You won't ever get a Batman movie past PG13.

Out of the comics I have seen, only one would come close to needing a R rating (Arkham Asylum) and even that could be done PG-13 with tricky camera work.

The Joker can still be the Joker and fit within a PG-13 enviroment. He has done it in the comics for near 70 years.

It's funny on how people want this to be Rated R.

It's one thing to wish or debate about something for fun. Yeah, I would be nice to have a Rated R Batman. It's wishful thinking, but it's a fun debate.

But then to say "Joker can only be in a Rated R movie to be accurate. If not, then why even bother with a movie that's PG-13," IS SILLY.

Hell, let's say there's a rating system for books in general. How many books of Batman out there would be considered to be Rated R? The FRank Miller books, and maybe a handful of other books have graphic violence or whatever. A handful.

Batman, though intented for a more mature crowd, is suppose to be a universally appealing chracter. Period.

Joker was pretty nuts in Batman89, and that movie as Pg-13. Look at Batman returns which was like a old style gothic horror movie, still PG-13. Returns was also very depressing and had some really grim scenes.

Well unfortunately , i am neither a child OR an executive at WB , therfore i have NO INTEREST WHATSOEVER in seeing a watered down joker just so some kids can get in through the front door of the theater and so the studio can make even more money that they can spend on big houses and flash cars for themselves. Why would i care about that?

what exactly do you mean by watered down? almost every incarnation of the joker has existed on the pages of comic books, not exactly a "R" rated medium. even killing joke, arkham asylum, and dkr portrayed quite vicious incarnations of the joker and those books are "pg-13" material at worst. you can do a lot inside the realm of pg-13.

if you want extreme language, sexuality, and violence (a few of the things that land movies in "R" territory) you should look elsewhere. those things dont belong in any batman stories i want to see. batman is a pop hero.

so what your asking for is not a joker who isnt "watered down" but rather amped up to an extreme level. thats not going to happen nor do i think it should.

Yes, because WB will be rolling in the money when they alienate a good portion of the fanbase!

Batman has always been PG-13 material, as has Joker. I thought Batman Begins was plenty dark as PG-13. Burton's Joker was far from perfect (due to the writing, not the rating), but still decent at PG-13. An R rated Batman would just be excessive.

I haven't looked for these threads but I wouldn't be surprised if people have suggested that Spider-Man 3 be rated R. Oh well, the Internet is the place to share your wacky theories.
