My idea for a Brand New Day Resolution

My idea for a Brand New Day resolution. Of course, doubtful that something along these lines would actually happen as it doesn’t seem to be going in this direction. But hey, one can dream, ah? If Mephisto acts kind of OOC here, I apologise, my only experience with him is OMD and the Ghost Rider movie, although I’ve been trying to read up on him more. (Warning: Long post ahead. And I thought this really didn't belong in the comics section of Spider-Man so I put it here)

Plotline
Arc One: 'Revelations' (Over the first 5-6 issues or so)
It begins with Peter and Mary Jane starting to become closer, seemingly being able to rekindle their romance somewhat after Bobby Carr dumps her for an action heroine he met on a comedy movie. At the same time, Peter is beginning to have nightmares with a voice telling him to stay away from her, Peter knows it’s from someone familiar, but he can’t figure out whom it was from, although the reader will realise it’s Mephisto. Regardless, it sends shivers down Peter’s spine. It continues as if nothing’s happening, with random crimes happening with some of the new villains like Overdrive or Mr Negative and Peter and Mary Jane begin to be closer still, becoming officially together. However, at the same time, Peter discovers a newspaper from Civil War about his identity being revealed, but at the same a news article to debunk it from a more recent month. He hears the voice from his dreams in his head claiming to “Consider it a warning.” At the same time, Peter also begins to notice that the Brand New Day characters and even people he knew are beginning to act differently, each taking different personality traits.

Lily Hollister – Lustful, sultry.
Vin Gonzales – Wrath, he becomes more aggressive towards Peter and others
Dexter Bennett – He begins taking a more greedy monopoly to try and earn the DB! More profits and does this by cutting the employees wages.
Carlie Cooper – She’s become more lazy, sitting around at home, over losing her job as a Forensics Scientist. Peter notes it’s quite unlike her to do that so she must be really depressed.
Flash Thompson – He’s began to eat more and more to try and get over losing his legs.
Mr Negative – Beginning to feel excessive pride and overconfidence over his criminal empire.
Harry Osborn – He becomes envious of Peter’s easygoing happy life and seems to want to poke and prod into his life to see how he does it.

Peter can’t help but feel something’s wrong, but is told by Mary Jane each are having individual problems and he can’t be everywhere, he does that enough already. After a while of being together, Peter notices a clip on the news claiming a citizen has had a stock copy of Spider-Man’s unmasking at Civil War, causing Peter to have a panic as he thought Dr Strange had helped him erase the memories of the unmasking, including the evidence of it. Mary Jane finally confesses to him, explaining to him about One More Day and how they were married and she told Mephisto to let her remember everything to protect him. She also mentions that this isn’t their world, unfortunately, as she harshly realised when she first got there, they’re in their own personal hell, and Aunt May has been dead for months. Peter, however, doesn’t believe it and flees. Mary Jane sighs, she knew this would happen and tries to go after him, this of course angers Mephisto, so uses this as an excuse to ‘break his part of the bargain’ or if he kept it in the first place. And therefore, later on, at Mr Negative’s and Aunt May’s soup kitchen, rebels of his gang raid and gun down Aunt May, or what appears to be her, anyway, disheartening Peter and causing him to after Mr Negative.

It turns out he’s joined up with the Sinister Six, now newly reformed to the Sinister Seven. They fight, Spidey defeats them with difficulty, until he finds that their faces are replaced with the seven characters he’s found were acting differently. This freaks Spidey out as his world begins to collapse around him. Puzzlingly, he finds Carlie and Vin, now members of SWAT Team to go after Spidey. He retreats back to his apartment but finds Vin there pointing a gun at him with handcuffs at the ready, finding a Spider-Man costume in his wardrobe. Spidey turns to flee, but the SWAT Team cause him to be cornered in an abandoned warehouse. He wonders, how could Vin be in two places at once? He tries to swing out of the warehouse, but it turns out his Web Shooters are empty, he tries a new cartridge, but that appears to be empty too although it’s clearly full. He tries to wall crawl to jump out of the rooftop window, but he can’t wall crawl anymore. Eventually, he gets swept up in some sort of red mist…Peter tries to get away, but Mephisto, in the red mist, puts Peter into what seems like another personal hell. The only difference this isn’t so as adept and plentiful as the Brand New Day world, it’s basically one thing, the same scenario of the Green Goblin throwing Gwen Stacy off the Brooklyn Bridge and Spidey not being able to save her. There is however, a difference, instead of Gwen Stacy, its Aunt May. Peter falls into the trap and tries to save her, but she keeps dying over and over.

Arc 2: The Last Day (over 5 issues)
Eventually, Peter screams in anguish and is saved by what seems like Dr Strange, who seems to be aware of Peter’s predicament and has been watching his bubble dimension for quite a while.. Peter, after what he’s just gone through, has some doubts if it’s the real Dr Strange, but after he convinces him, Strange tells him about what happened, as the memories begin to come flooding back to Peter. Peter sinks in terror and turmoil and asks what’s to come for Mary Jane; Strange says since he essentially traded his wife for his aunt, Mephisto is forcing Mary Jane to stay in the Brand New Day world. Luckily however, Aunt May, when she died in the 616 world; was saved before Mephisto’s demons could intervene and she’s passed on gracefully, and she’s had a heavenly reality similar to Peter’s BND hell (explaining the Astonishing Aunt May stories). Strange tells him the new faces he met in that world do exist in the 616 world (therefore allowing the BND quo to exist in the MU. Dr Strange also goes into detail on whatever adventures Peter's experienced in the BND world, happened in the real world too, just the new cast were unaware that Peter was a demon in disguise, and the thinking like Peter thing was used as cover incase the demon ran into any psychics or seyonces.), however, the ones he met were demons disguised as them, the only ones who weren’t demons in Peter’s world were himself and Mary Jane. Peter asks what he can do to save her.

Dr Strange mentions that in the Brand New Day world, Mephisto had effectively tripped up Peter and put in the alternate reality that he actually gave his soul to Mephisto, or at least altered his memories in that world to do so, since in the BND timeline he effectively had no marriage to give as well as well as the actual deal in the timeline. When Aunt May died in that world, Mephisto was going to manipulate Peter using that. Peter realises what he needs to do, and to confront Mephisto to win his wife and soul back. He then ponders, if he’s been here all this time, what’s been happening in the real world? Strange then answers that Mephisto sent a demon disguised as Spider-Man so no one would notice he was gone, however, the demon unwittingly revealed their identity a few days ago, so the superhero community is in confusion.

Dr Strange helps Spider-Man by saying Mephisto usually has a challenge. If Spidey can prove he has determination to win in a battle against his minions. If he can do this, he can help to overthrow the plot Mephisto has to get one up against God, if Spider-Man succeeds, he’ll be free. So Spider-Man is sent to an arena where he’s face to face with Mephisto, Mary Jane held hostage next to him. Mephisto tries to manipulate Peter, claiming he obviously doesn’t love Mary Jane that much if he was willing to trade his marriage. Peter denies that was the case, and claims he was desperate to save his Aunt as it was because of him he was dead. He then goes into a philosophical idea that humans, when desperate, would turn to anything for help to put things right. They usually don’t think of the consequences beforehand, and sometimes wind up regretting it later. Mephisto thinks on this, and before the big battle, puts Peter into three moral dilemma situations from previous issues, the first is when he found out his Uncle Ben got shot as a teen, and what seems like a dodgy secret agent offers Peter help. He says no, that he’ll track him on his own. The second dilemma is Captain Stacy and Doctor Octopus, with someone claiming that he’ll help go after Doctor Octopus, Spidey claims there’s no time and Captain Stacy needs help. And the third dilemma is the same One More Day situation again, with Peter saying no but the temptation was much harder then it was last time and he almost says yes, and he would’ve failed the test if he did.

Mephisto flips out at this, and so locks Spider-Man in a fiery arena against his minions where Mary Jane is forced to watch. At first, Peter seems like he can hold his own, but the numbers begin to overwhelm Peter, and it almost seems like he’ll be defeated. But Peter begins to have a slow, gradual realisation and reaffirmation of his beliefs. Uncle Ben died because of him, and he still made up for that mistake, he’s not going to let the same thing happen because of a relative, and angrily gets back up and fights. Eventually, it seems like Mephisto is getting bored of this and decides to torture Spider-Man more, by forcing winged demons to take away Mary Jane, Mephisto tries to manipulate Peter yet again saying he’ll let her go if he promises to work with him. Peter’s in constant turmoil and musing over the dilemma when suddenly, both are them are saved again. By Loki and Dr Strange. They’ve managed to sabotage Mephisto’s plan, and expel him from the room and force him to release Peter and Mary Jane from their contract, which Mephisto reluctantly does.

Peter and Mary Jane are teleported back to their apartment they were last seen together in, although roughly at the same time as whatever stage the Marvel universe is progressing in by now. They embrace, and declare to each other they’ll never let go of each other again. However, if Marvel were really so insistent that they still wanted to remove the marriage, it could possibly go one or two ways:
1. After Peter and Mary Jane are settled and happy, Mephisto is still trying to get them and sends a rift into their apartment. Pushing Peter out of the way, Mary Jane winds up getting sucked in and hangs on for dear life. Peter tries to help her, but Mary Jane can’t hold on much longer. When she realises the situation is hopeless, she tells Peter the same words she told him at the end of OMD, ‘be the hero. Be my hero’ and falls in, crushing Peter’s heart.

2. Peter’s so ashamed of indirectly cheating on MJ that he feels he’s not a suitable husband for her. Therefore, he files for divorce to keep her safe and to keep her happy, thinking he doesn’t deserve someone as wonderful as her. It would effectively bring Peter taking responsibility for what he’s done factor in.

If they want to keep it, things would progress as normal and Mary Jane would eventually become pregnant again. After all of this, Spider-Man approaches the superhero community over what he’s done. Some are disgusted at what he did; others can’t forgive what he did, but understand why he did it. Regardless, out of shame, Peter swings away and wonders what he can do to atone for it. Dr Strange appears before him one more time and says there’s one last thing he can do for Peter, the chance to say goodbye to Aunt May by summoning her spirit and giving her the chance to talk to him one last time.

Peter explains what happened and he apologises for it, Aunt May, being solemn, understands why Peter did it, and feels no anger now he’s repented and made up for his mistake. She then repeats the same words Uncle Ben told him ‘With great power comes great responsibility’. She also explains that part of that responsibility is accepting loss and letting go. She mentions that sometimes we lose people regardless of what we do, and it is a part of life, and we may occasionally blame ourselves for it when we shouldn’t. She tells Peter she loves him and then passes on to the next life.

At the closing part of the arc, Peter remains alone on the Empire State Building, contemplating on what Aunt May said and Mary Jane’s pregnancy (if the marriage was kept). He wonders if he was so easily tempted by Mephisto, what’s to stop him being corrupted and forgetting responsibility? He notes this solemnly and makes a reaffirmation to himself (regardless if he’s lost Mary Jane or kept her), that he needs to be firm and have an iron will in the future. His family and friends need Spider-Man to be a determined symbol of good and hope, and then realises what he just said and ponders if he’ll get a cape and cowl next. Chuckling to himself, he puts his mask back on and swings into the sunrise, pondering how he can make things up to the superhero community. He wonders about (insert whatever retcon reason for the remasking here), making a closing joke about "Magic being for wusses." and "Responsibility taking the hard way out of things".

That was an interesting read. I think they could pull it off.

Thank you very much for the comment. ^^ It's appreciated.

Couple of expansions to some idea points:

- When Dr Strange explained the BND adventures still happened in the real world, he notes that he and Loki were initially tricked when Demon-Peter came to ask for help with the remasking with the demon trying to mask his origins and trying to disguise his thoughts by making thought remarks as if it were the real Peter Parker commenting on his situation. He says he had a theory that the demon Peter recorded any adventures he had, and sent to the world the real Peter Parker was trapped in so Peter wouldn't suspect where he was.

- Dr Strange and Loki could actually help undo several marriage contracts Mephisto had obtained while Spider-Man was fighting Mephisto.
