N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton

Saw this today and it was fantastic. Gray has got a lot more great movies ahead of him. I actually haven't seen 8 Mile but this is really the only really great rap drama I've seen.

The acting was on point too. It was eerie how much that actor looked like Tupac.

I'm just thinking assuming this does great at the Box Office (which it looks like it will) if there is going to be a rush to get some other Hip-Hop related films out?

They'll probably speed up work on the Tupac flick that's been in development for years I think.

I would hope for a Tupac movie but I just know Hollywood would butcher it and make it corny.

Some would have said the same about an NWA movie and look at how that turned out...

It all depends on the cast and crew. That's it.

Don't do Pac like they did Biggie...shameful.

Anyone see the ESPN 30 for 30 special "Straight Outta LA?" it was directed and narrated by Ice Cube and it's about the correlation between the NFL's Raiders moving to Los Angeles and the rise of the NWA.

I don't know if it was a terrible movie per se, definitely not very good just sucks that someone who was one of the greatest rappers ever and did have an interesting story ended up with a mediocre at best film.

I blame Diddy having too much control of things.

Straight Outta Compton should definitely serve as a blue print on how to do a good music artist bio-pic.

I hope the Director's cut (F. Gary Gray has promised) will have more stuff, especially on MC Ren and DJ Yella.

It's number one this weekend. :)

Rightfully. A necessary, relevant, and damn good summer biopic. Hopefully, this is a sign to Hollywood that you can make important summer films, without toning down the material to a PG-13 rating, that can bring box office results.

This was great. No if, ands, or buts about it.

The cast was great. Everyone acted so well. I personally think the guy who played Eazy was the best. And I'll eat my damn words about Ice Cube's son. I wasnt so sure about him, but he killed it. The camraderie between all of

The way they wrote the characters were good too. Jerry Heller was very interesting. The movie really played with multiple things. Was he just a selfish jerk?, was he in love with Eazy?, or was he really oblivious to what he was doing?

Soundtrack was great but I wasn't surprised being a NWA/hip hop fan

IT was really funny too. Yella was a scene stealer almost every time he opened his mouth.

My only complaints are
-At times it was too "wink wink, nudge nudge" like. Too many references and easter eggs and such. "Hey look Cube is writing Friday" "Hey look Dre is producing Nuthing But a G Thang"
-They shouldve foreshadowed a little bit better regarding [BLACKOUT]Eazy getting HIV. If I didnt know the history, the way the movie showed it I wouldve suspected that Yella would get burned. I know Jerry mentions it in passing, but still[/BLACKOUT]
-More MC Ren and Yella. At least Yella was really funny and charismatic. Ren kinda didnt have anything to do. Although they did get some funny moments ("F*** your mama. F*** your daddy. F*** your grandma") but they couldve made brief mentions of what their lives were like before Dre, Cube, and E. Ren is implied to be a Crip with Eazy, but they couldve delved in a bit better. Or at the very least give them some scenes with Eazy, Dre, or Cube.
And yes I know Eazy, Cube, and Dre are the big 3 and the most known. If you do a movie about the Beatles youre probably gonna focus more on Paul and John, but dont give the other guys (Ren, Yella) the short end of the stick

But as I said this was great. Loved it. IMO the best movie involving hip hop ever (although that isnt saying much). My favorite movie of the year so far above Mad Max, Inside Out, and AoU.
Was this movie that bad? Never saw it...

It was ok. Very good performance by the guy who played Biggie. But the pacing and storytelling wasnt up to snuff.

and on another note: Im pretty sure theyre all at different studios but they really need to get the guys who played Dre, Snoop, and Suge in this and have them in the Pac biopic. Maybe get Derek Luke (Diddy) and the guy who played Biggie too. All of them were great in their roles

I know it may have exaggerated it a little, but I liked how all three of the guys were pretty intelligent and kind of snarky from a humor standpoint. They weren't like insanely intellectual (well, Easy actually came off like that) but they weren't idiots.

They did foreshadow
Eazy getting HIV, particularly during the first major pool party where Eazy sits down and talks to Heller. Eazy essentially leaves the conversation and mentions how he's going to get some "p***y."

Heller also mentions sex during a dinner conversation with Eazy, where he says something like, "You need to relax with these girls. Sure, it's fun, but you'll end up with 60 kids." I think this takes place at the beginning of the lobster dinner.

Didn't Future Avenger Anthony Mackie play 2Pac in the Biggie bio?

Yeah he did. He was ok

Read what I said. I said they kinda did and I named the part that you mentioned in the second paragraph. Im saying I thought they couldve done it better

As someone who didn't know the history of the group, not even knowing who Eazy was, it really didn't feel out of the blue for him.

Yep and as much as I love Anthony, he was absolutely horrible as 2Pac. Worst role I've ever seen him in, literally.

And I'm really happy to see this movie getting the big success it's getting. I don't know if it means more Hip-Hop related films are coming but I do know it's going to show big studio heads that movies starring black actors can be highly profitable & just as good as...well, you know. :cwink:

Dre did mention in the N.W.A documentary that Eazy called himself a 'thrill seeker' and never wore condoms when having sex with all the women he was with.

I got to see this movie today, and I enjoyed it. The acting in this was fantastic from all the four main guys involved (Dre, Cube, E, and Jerry), and yeah they could have did more with Ren and Yella but they were featured more than I thought they would be, I didn't think they would even mention the World Class Wrecking Cru, they didn't say the name but you kinda knew what it was during the club scene. And Yella did have some funny lines.

Yella: Your name Felicia?

Girl: YOU FORGOT MY NAME?

A lot of people say that the third act wasn't that great, but I didn't have a problem with it that much. Although with everything that was going on I kind of expected a bit more with that ending.

BTW, in the scene where Snoop is introduced to Dre, was that suppose be Warren G with him?

Im confused on what that has to do with the opinion I stated

I assumed so.

What are actually the chances that we get an extended cut? I feel like with most movies they get talked about but arent released. Probably waiting for 10 years later so consumers can double dip.

And on a small sidenote, all three of their wives were fine.

Incredible looking and nice too
